Good choice of aperture. f/2.8 blurs unwanted background details but keeps most of the subject in focus.

Do you guys just take your camera stuff into restaurants??
Yes, it is a habit here in some parts of Asia, that when a dish arrives, the cameras will get the 1st shot before anyone takes a bite.
A chance to practice before biting.

why not ask me myself ,
basically direct flash will not work. Take ur strobe somewhere at an angle, mine is under some plastic square casing thingy.. and use the highest shutter speed possible for ur camera. Either 1/200 or 1/250. Also separate the subject from the background. The farther it is from the background, the less of the background you will see..

Put simply, with low background lighting go for a narrow aperture around f/22 and quickest shutter speed you can still sync flash with as Kevin indicated.
This combination of small aperture and short exposure means that the background will be massively underexposed, ie black.
You then light your subject with a flash, mounted off camera to the side somewhere, so that light from the flash does not illuminate the background. You then end up with a correctly illuminated subject but underexposed background.

im still learning guys...when in indoors and low light situations, i bust out my 50mm...set the fstop to 1.8 or maybe a stop higher...is there a way to get crisp pictures without the bokeh in the background? the bokeh looks great all the time but there are times where i want a sharp image all around, not just on the subject...

This really depends on the distance at which your focusing. The closer your subject is to the background, the more the subject and the background will both be in focus. A camera focuses on a specific distance, so if everything is close to that distance, everything will mostly be in focus. But, if one thing is much closer than something else, the camera will only be able to focus on one of those things. Shooting at a higher aperture allows more to be in focus, but it sacrifices the amount of light that you let in to the camera. Therefore, if you're in a dark environment, you are pretty much forced to shoot at lower apertures, which means that you will have a much narrower depth of field (expanse of focus distance). I hope this helps and makes sense!

I am very impressed by this shot too.
Just a question, what kind of fluid was used ? Water ? The surface is flat like solid ground !
How was the flash setup ? i am guessing 1 with blue gel and another with a cone to focus the light ?
Thanks in advance for the info.

No nothing special in regards to setup, I only got the flash last week, my first so was just playing with it this weekend.
Water was used, approximately 0.5 - 1cm deep on a mirror, I used clay to create a dam on the mirror and keep the water from going all over my bench.
I had a black piece of cardboard behind the mirror so that where I focussed all you could see in the mirror was the black card. To the right of the mirror I had a piece of blue card.
The flash was mounted on the camera, am yet to get a wireless / cord (on their way) and aimed at the blue card.
Shot in manual mode with a shutter speed of 1/250 and an apeture of f/9.
lol by no means a proffesional setup thats for sure, arg and I'm embarissed to say I had the dropper in one had and my other hand on the trigger, shutter release on its way though....

Cross your fingers and pray!
Seriously though in good light it's fine (not super fast and pretty noisy, but "fine"), but if you're trying to make use of the f1.8 in low light the focus is really hit and miss. I tend to use focus assist on an external flash if I can.

That'll do focus assist nicely :D What body do you have? Basically you enable focus assist on the camera, but also disable the external flash from firing (also a setting on the body). When focussing the body will use the "red" assist light on the external flash, which I have found to help in low light. It should all be in your manual how to set it up. Also as the focus isn't that fast, if you are using a narrow aperture (f1.8 ) then it is very easy to lose focus on your subject if it is moving even slightly as the depth of field is so small.

^Nice first post! Welcome! This is a great place to learn stuff!
Your photo looks a little over-exposed to me. Try increasing the shutterspeed or lowering the iso...
I just shot a bunch of skateboarding stuff. I used my 50mm in the very beginning just to mess around. After about three shots I switched to a wider angle, though. Please check out the other photos on my facebook or flickr (links in signature). I just can't post them here because I used a wider lens...

Someone already pretty much answered your question, but I would suggest beginning with selecting the Aperture at which you want to shoot. If you want a subject in focus with a blurred background, you probably want to be at f/4 or below, and if you want everything fairly in focus, you probably want f/5.6 or higher. This varies depending on how close you are to your subject, though... If you're far away and you shoot at a wide aperture, everything will still be in focus. Hope this helps!

I realized how expensive of a hobby it is. I am already looking at the 28-135 mm lens, the 24-85mm, a flash and maybe a wireless remote.
Thanks for the link. I am gonna do some reading right now that the ground has stopped shaking. :D
