All taken with a 50mm f/1.8 which was broken then jammed back together and which has a chip in the middle of the lens. And it keeps on going...

I would liked to have a closer focusing distance with the nifty fifty.
What is the best way and the most cost effective way of doing this ?
Not looking at switching to Macro lens (50mm f2.5)
Suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

I use close-up filters. Much cheaper than extension tubes, though you lose a little quality. Still, the nifty has plenty to spare...

IMO, not worth it to attempt to turn this into a macro lens. For macro on the cheap, grab a $10 set of manual extension tubes, a cheap 50mm lens with manual aperture control, and an EF adapter. Should run under $50 total.
If you go the closeup lens route, your 50mm is the last lens I would use as closeup lenses have a greater effect on longer lenses. So you would want to use a closeup lens on your telephotos lens instead.

I was thinking of getting Kenko extension tubes, but I saw a $12 (AUD) extension tube online. Will the result be the same? Will it fit any lens? Pardon my ignorance, I don't know much about photography equipments. :)

I had the 500D and used a step up ring. Problem is that whenever I point the lens somewhere, other than the marco purpose subject, my max focusing distance became too near and I have to remove the 500D or change the lens.
What i would liked, is to reduce the min. focusing distance, between my camera and the subject (small objects).
I was thinking of getting Kenko extension tubes, but I saw a $12 (AUD) extension tube online. Will the result be the same? Will it fit any lens? Pardon my ignorance, I don't know much about photography equipments.
Same here about extension tubes, they came in various mm sizes. Have no clue how it works. Bring the min. focus distance closer ? What are the penalty ?
I had an old Pantagon M42 bellow from a long time ago. Didn't know how to use it .

while i fanstastic close up on my 100-400mm L , the minimum focusing distance is very very far away. Sometimes, I don't have room to move back so much.

It was my old home town, too, for a few years. There's a part of me that would move back there like a shot.
I subscribed to the South East thread for quite a while but it was taking up a large amount of time keeping up with it. I dip in now and again, though.

Haha yeah, I use LR, so a rule of thirds grid comes up when I crop... I just had a hard time with cropping it, because I hate cutting off at joints, but I didn't want to get too close to the end of her hair... Confusing... Thanks for the input!

I'm new to this forum and liking photography. I'm not a pro, just have a watermark to protect the subjects in my images. I just got this lens about a week or so ago and am LOVING it! I'm using my brothers rebel xt and he has a kit lens so I can see the difference a prime lense can make! He also has a 70-200mm f/4L lens that I mess with at times also. I'm considering adding on the 24mm f/2.8 lens too. I just started using his camera (was using a p&s) about a month ago and jumped right in to full manual.

.......I have no idea what to expect.
Expect a very shallow depth of field at large apertures. Autofocus is hit or miss in questionable light. I invested in an EF-S focusing screen (fits your 50D) and that helped with manual focusing.

Thanks. It was sort of an accident at first. During post processing I hit something that really darkened the background. It got most of it and what it didnt get out I airbrushed it out. That was the first time I tried that.

I'm using Microsoft Digital Image suite as my PP software. I belive it was in the color and saturation area. Mostly with color balance in the shadows. Here is an old pic befor and after that I just played with a little. It would need more tweaking though. My lunchtime is allmost over.

while other lenses for example 17-40, 85 that I've both have filters as glass is sticking outside and it's easy to put mark with finger...

Great shots from everyone, I think I have gone through the entire thread in the last week haha. I just received my lens in the mail today and am excited to try it out. Unfortunately that will have to wait until next weekend when I go home, as I am getting my sisters XTi with grip and accessories for super cheap since she is buying a T2i. It will be my first dSLR and a return to photography for me after a few years of not really doing much. I have a Canon Pro90 IS that I used to shoot with quite a bit.
One question though, and without starting a RAW vs Jpeg debate - do most of you shoot in RAW or Jpeg? I am mostly just wondering as I see the results and am curious.

I would always go for RAW if you're considering post processing, is much more flexible than JPEG! If you just want your pictures straight out of the camera, put it on a computer and share it with people you should shoot JPEG, hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies.. I am still on the fence I suppose. I am not shy to the PP process. I used to shoot jpegs with the Pro90 and my current point and shoot and would spend hours with photoshop elements adjusting settings, not to mention heavier photoshop type work with layers and merging multiple images (not stitching them into panoramas). In this case though I am thinking strictly PP from camera to presentable image though, not extensive photoshop work. Part of me wants to shoot RAW because I know the benefits and part of me is wondering, am I really going to benefit right now, seeing as its my first dSLR and I just want to go out and take photos and work on that side of things.
I guess it just has me wondering if I should shoot JPEG, and if I am not happy with the way photos turn out, switch to RAW. It not like I can't make small adjustments to the JPEG.
Small question. Lets say all the settings I use (exposure, ISO, etc) for a photo are correct and it isn't overexposed or anything drastic. I will still need to apply some PP since there will not be any sharpening or saturation which would normally occur in the JPEG conversion inside the camera. Correct? I will always need to do the tiniest adjustment to the RAW before output?
I should discuss my dads workflow with him, he is where I got the photography bug (and the Pro 90 :P) and he shoots a Canon XXD model last I was aware of (Canon for sure).
I have MBP and Aperture 3 for what it's worth.

My shots rarely need sharpening, and converting RAW to JPEG only takes a second so basicly there is no reason not to shoot RAW!? What you might want to do if you're not comfortable with just RAW is switch to the RAW + JPEG setting, I know atleast my 50D does that! This way you can throw away the RAW if the JPEG is sufficient or the other way around if you're not pleased with what the JPEG shows!?

I should discuss my dads workflow with him, he is where I got the photography bug (and the Pro 90 :P) and he shoots a Canon XXD model last I was aware of (Canon for sure).
I have MBP and Aperture 3 for what it's worth.
I work for the car magazine and I never shot RAW :) I can get pictures look good with WB, exposure, without using more versatile RAW format... it's better of course, but for my needs, (even printing large) I didn't hit the wall with jpg yet. It's easier to go through series of photos because windows by default displays them in thumbs, and I don't need to hassle with conversion software, just drop my jpgs in photoshop and work from there...
I recommend you to learn getting right everything in camera, after that you can even use raw :)

You can always shoot in RAW+JPG. Just get a big fat SDHC card and you're set for the best of both worlds :)
I'm picking up a 32gb SDHC class10 for $100, so it's really not that expensive, and it'll let me shoot about 900 RAW+jpg, if I so desire. I actually shoot JPG unless I plan on printing whatever it is that I'm shooting. RAW is a little overkill for my "goofing around" style of photography. I'm trying to get my skill level up so that I can start taking shots that are printable at poster-size and worth having on the wall (more in the artistic value of the shot than quality of image)
edit: on a side note... I finally bought my own 50mm f1.8 w/ hood, today. Should be shipped in by next weekend :) No more borrowing the friend's lens for my photog'ing

thats why you get a mac ;)
or just lightroom to browse your RAW pictures. Maybe Bridge?

i personally didn't after reading a review that said that after a slight bump into the wall with the hood, the lens broke.
apparently the hood created enough leverage from the slightest impact to break the lens.
