I finally stopped to take a shot of this awesome sign I pass a lot. This was shot in raw, for comparison purposes on here I used the "standard" picture style, so it is similar to what the camera does for jpeg processing. However, I did add +1.5EV during raw conversion.
1/80 f/5.6 ISO 400.

Here is a second shot, but this one has gone through some pp. I used ACR for this shot, DPP for the one above.

This is SOOC except for a bit of curves, no cropping. On auto focus using the centre AF point.
Taken on my old 300D, just got my 30D and haven't tried it yet!
Great lens, hard to focus at 1.8 till you get the hang of it.

One question for you guys - can you get the same results w/ the 18-55 kit that comes w/ the Rebel XT? I love the crazy bokeh effects you get and it would be sweet to start off with shots similar in nature (getting the XT this week or at latest Monday, shipped today :))

yup, work for IH in the product dept (now called World Wide Cycle Supply since we acquired a few other brands).
tried to do a little PP to it (camera has an issue converting RAW to .jpg when I plug the camera directly to the laptop. haven't figured that out) but didn't really seem to improve it. so left it as is. :)

frickin excellent Paul!
Care if I ask what lighting setup was used and what PP?
This image is mind-blowing!
Thanks for the comments.
The lighting was a single off camera 550EX fitted with a cardboard snoot (made from a Pringles tube if I remember correctly). This was triggered by an ST-E2. Incidentally, this is a self portrait and I have the remote release in my left hand.
PP was mostly a grunge type action downloaded from http://www.atncentral.com/download.htm.

Thank you brewster :)
I have a bunch of stuff sitting around in a pile on a shelf. Most of that stuff is things of limitted usefullness (like my lensbaby which I LOVE having when I want to do that kind of work, or my Tokina 19-35 3.5-4.5 which is wider than I usually go) but my portrait work is generally done with this gear bag
Canon 5D
28mm 1.8
50mm 1.8
85mm 1.8
Last year I was using a 10D with 28mm 1.8 for the majority of my shots, with a few 50mm 1.8 shots and some Sigma 28-70 2.8 stuff under studio lighting. Anything in my "Portraits 2007" gallery is done with the 5D, everything in every other gallery was taken with the 10D.
Thanks so much for taking an interest in my work by the way :D
EDIT: I looked and noticed you had the Sigma 30mm 1.4 in your wish list. It's my humble opinion that this is the FIRST thing you should buy on your list if you're doing portait work. I find the 50mm equivalent (on my 10D that was my 28mm, on my 5D it's the nifty obviously) is a really wonderful environmental portrait lense. Any of my shots from the brickworks that are portrait shots are taken either with my 50 1.8 on the 5D or 28 1.8 on the 10D. I really really enjoy that length and think you should give it a shot if you want to be doing any environmental stuff :)

The 50/F1.8 can "hunt" in AF mode...the older MK I has a standard focusing ring that enables MF more easily for focusing in low-light...I've read so many posts here by people who give up on lenses that "hunt", as if they never manually focus...when people point out that the Canon dslr screen doesn't have a split screen or a microprism collar, I let them know that for 40 years I shot Nikons with the same flat matte screen and did just fine (actually preferred with longer/'slower' lenses)...it takes practice, yes, but with practice the 50/1.8 is a great indoor lens perfect for sports...
The nifty50 focusing front element, like my sawed-off 18-55kit, works, but is not as well for me as the standard focusing ring...I think the similarly designed 35/F:2 will be a perfect match for the 50...

Like I said before, I am just starting out here. I am having trouble getting the focus just right in my pics. It is so particular. If the center point is off just the slightest, then the pics are off with focus. I am still testing my shots though. But I just loved this pic. It was pretty fast and quick and it turned out ok. Its a little dark but I love the way the background is blurred.

That's his thing to decide, isn't it?
50mm on a crop = 80mm FF, perfect for "head portraits".
And this lens can not focus fast . I am looking for a EF35mm or Sigma 30mm F1.4.
It can focus fast, although it has some hunting in low light conditions.
And being a ~$80 lens it's a very nice deal overall!
Not everyone can afford the 35mm f/1.4L or the 30mm f/1.4 EX...

I agree with Brewster, this is a great over-all lens, once you get over the learning curve. Every lens requires that you learn how to use it, wide aperture lenses are hard to learn, period.

Well you are right on the focal length , it is up to him to decide , but as I have had alot of experience with it and hearing people rave for this cheapo all the time without any other reason than its being so cheap , I just wanted to put my thoughts on it .
If you did not like it sorry for that . I apologize but this lens is not good for many people and it is wrong to tell any one getting an EF mount camera to get it over the kit just because it is USD 70 or 80 , the kit at least zoom and more versatile than this with better focus accuracy.
Imagine if you are stuck at 50mm and what you can have is only that the particular focal length (50mm), what would you do?
Can you shoot landscape or sity scape with this , what about in door shooting groups?
That was only what I wanted to say , plus this lens is not as sharp as any other prime I ever played with on my XTI.
If you do like this focal length , why do you not consider EF-S60mm F2.8 macro(can do macro and head-above kinda portrait) or EF50 F1.4 (this one is really sharp and very cheap for what it does USD 325).

I agree that it isn't the best lens if you can only buy one (lens), but if the person already has the kit lens, this is a good low light prime which beats the kit lens in IQ anyday. And IMO the AF on the kit is just as good/bad as the 50mm's.
Imagine if you are stuck at 50mm and what you can have is only that the particular focal length (50mm), what would you do?
Use my feet. The 50mm is a good lens to learn composition, the rule of thirds etc etc.

Yes you can shoot landscapes, although not so wide. (However stitching the pics to panoramas is an option).
Indoor/group shots is where this lens shines, actually. The wide aperture gives the photog the ability to skip the flash (that probably would ruin the mood of the photo).
plus this lens is not as sharp as any other prime I ever played with on my XTI.
Stop it down. NO lens is sharp wide open. It's plenty sharp stopped down, especially considering it's price.
If you do like this focal length , why do you not consider EF-S60mm F2.8 macro(can do macro and head-above kinda portrait) or EF50 F1.4 (this one is really sharp and very cheap for what it does USD 325).
I've got the 100mm macro, and don't think the 60mm is better in any way.
The 50mm f/1.4 is sharper than the f/1.8, and it's build quality is better, however, it's also ~$245 more expensive. I don't need it. I'm happy with the nifty. For some, the price difference isn't worth it. Those $245 I plan on using on some extension tubes.

Ok, got all your ponits and respect that .
But one thing I am only trying to say is that to recommend this lens to some one does not even have the kit lens or like it is ridiculous.
At least his or her first lens should or better be a zoom considering versatility and the kit is almost free and the IQ is not bad at all , just the BQ is bad .
So why do so many people suggest the EF50mm F1.8 over the kit lens ?
If he or she had a kit lens or an EF-S17-85 kinda stuff , it is ok to suggest that cheapo since it is so cheap.
You say you can get all focal length with your feet , yeah it is true though, some times you really need to zoom cause something like a cat does not stay at the same position as you go get closer to him or her , he or she gets very scared and run so quaickly .............I always mis my zooms when I go out with only the 50mm or 30mm prime ........So now , I always put my Sigma 18-200 on my XTI and bring the EF50mm F1.4 or 30mm F1.4 with me , maybe as I get a better zoom (either a Sigma 17-70 or Tam 17-50) , I will leave my 18-200 at my room , but my point is still only one prime without zooms can not do many things unless you are only shooting static sub.
I never use flash though , my kit lens focuses very fast in very low light , a bit slower than my EF-S17-85 but alot faster than my nitfty Fifty (theF1.4 focuses much faster than the kit).
I expected real visible and huge difference in those 2 lenses esp in terms of color balance and sharpness when I bought the so-called nifty , which actually is so slow to focus. But to be honest , I think my kit is nothing less sharp , and actually my kit was much sharper than my 17-85IS.
So I am so disppointed and it is hard to sell the Nifty on line since it is so cheap even as new , other wise , it 's not around my desk any more.
Best regards.

I made a bone-head rookie mistake and didn't change the white balance from tungsten to daylight before shooting the pics. I'm not good enough at PS to fix it, so I found a neat tutorial on converting color to B&W in PS.

I just got the lens today, it's my first besides the kit. Here are a couple pics:

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/1351/img5542v2bp9.jpg
Both straight from cam, no post processing, only resized.
Now I posted the rose one just more to ask more about the lens, not really 'showing off' either picture really. The rose pic... it looks just a little overexposed. Is this because I set the aperture large? I mean, that's one of the neat things about this lens, so naturally I tried it out (setting a low F-stop)
It was full, bright California sunshine here.
Should I stop it down in full sunlight?
The second one is just another random pic I took to test it at night. Obviously I got a lot of clunkers, but the ones that worked came out really amazing! This one is sharp even at 100%. Love the colors, sharpness.

Having recently had a 50mm f/1.4 for a week, I must say, I don't think that the extra expense of the f/1.4 lens is worth it. The USM wasn't all that hot (compared to my 85mm or my 24-105), and it hunted, and just didn't perform all that better.

The dof pictures of flowers etc, is it done in Manual mode or AV/TV mode?
It seems when i tried to get close to a subject the lens starts making this machanic sound and ive to back up.Im assuming because its a low light shot.
any advice on settings for good macros and good dof of portraits etc.
