Well, on my uncalibrated monitor, it looks great. Vivid Colors, sharpness, and it just pops out.

I love my nifty fifty! It's true, the AF is terrible but I have discovered that if I MF and relay on the AF confirm I get almost 100% keeper rate even at f/1.8.

My technique too. Also, there is so much slop in the focus ring that if you let go of it before the picture is taken, focus will drift.

can you guys please explain your technique in detail for a newbie like me

'relay on the AF confirm'? did not understand that part

'slop in the focus ring'? did not understand that bit too.. did you mean lens creep? but my understanding is that lens creep happens for zooms and not primes

many thanks

I think he meant that when you try to focus using MF, a focus confirmation can be verified when you do a half press of the shutter. You would hear a beep like in AF when you do it correctly.

It's true!

It takes a lot of work to get a keeper from my cat. His coat makes the AF search a good bit.

Sure. Set AF to one shot (no confirmation with servo). Select the AF point you'll be using to confirm focus. Set lens to MF. Half press the shutter (or press AF-ON depending on how your camera is set up). Slowly rotate the focus ring on the lens 'till the green confirmation lamp on the far right of the viewfinder lights. Don't let go of the focus ring-hold it snugly (I use some inward pressure on the ring to ensure it doesn't move after focusing). There is enough slop in the mechanism that letting go will slightly change the plane of focus. Snap the picture. That's it. Hope it works for you also.

Yes, that's exactly what I do and so far it's been working great. Sometimes it's not enough to simply slowly rotate the MF ring until the focus confirmation beeps. You really want to make sure that the green focus confirm LED is also lit before taking the shot. It's best to use the central focus point. The nifty fifty set to f/1.8-2 is acceptably sharp only in the center of the picture so I find it best to put my subject there and later fix the composition by cropping. This also makes focusing easier and more precise.
The point about not taking your hand off the MF ring before taking the shot is also important as the focus ring is so loose that it's too easy to accidentally shift it while taking the hand off.

I usually shoot my landscapes with the 15-85mm, but I had the 50mm on while doing some portraits of my girlfriend. Haven't really shot any landscapes with it, so out of curiosity snapped off a couple. Pleasantly surprised at how sharp it was. It's just hard to be stuck with 50mm for landscapes though.

Here I'm trying out the EF50mm f/1:8 II vs the kit EF-S18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4117/4801137447_9d78d1f64a_b.jpg

The lighter coloured part is the 50mm, no post processing done to either image at all, but the focal lengths are different - 2.5 on the 50mm & 5.6 (the min I could get it to) in the zoom

Sadly I didn't quite get the focal length to 50 on the 55 as I hoped, just at 51mm.

A couple of quick observations though, the 50mm AF seems a little strange, tripod mounted on with the AF point on ol' buddy here it kept hunting, just a little but it didn't seem to know what it wanted.

The other thing is that the ring at the front is a totally different size, so nothing (other than Raynox which has a universal fitting) fits any more, not even the hood :(

love this lens... can't believe i waited so long to get it. I don't mind 50mm on a crop at all.

this image is straight from the camera shot in raw. and below it is a 100% crop of the focus point. The image was taken hand-held.

I dropped my 50mm the other day and it snapped in half. I am kind of sad.. I had it less than a year and it never came off of my camera... Now I am thinking of upgrading to a 1.4.. anyone have any advice on that? is it worth the extra money?

I realize that the 1.8 is really soft at the wide apertures... sometimes it looks really nice though.

yeah.. i visited my baby niece for the first time.. and she was doing a really cute pose/smile/position.. i was shooting with a 16-35 and thought it would look great with the 50mm.. so i went and grabbed my 50 and i dropped it out of excitement. i was real bummed.. but atleast i didnt drop the 16! ugh... i will be more careful from now on.

way sharper... F2.8 to F8 is where I try to keep it (F4-F8 being razor sharp),,, it seems to get noticeably softer outside that range. 2.4 looks much better though than 1.8 though... I suggest you put the camera on a tripod in AV mode and take a photo of the same object at different apertures,,, you will see the difference.

btw, my camera is a 1.3 crop, so not sure how that plays into everything. (My DOF is shallower than say a 1.6 but I think the aperture values regarding maximum sharpness should all remain the same...

Appears a little OOF. Was this hand held or tripod/stationary? Could just be a little motion blur if hand held. Manual or auto focus? Simplest way to test sharpness/focus is using a tripod on auto focus, then compare with various styles and options. My nifty's tolerance is a little off on my T2i's tolerance at closer focal lengths using 1.8. So since I can't micro adjust, I shoot further distances at 1.8 or move past 2.0 to stay sharp.

Was handheld at 1/1600 so not too much motion blur.
With the other bottles a 1/4" forward and back I thought one of them would be more in focus if the auto focus was out but they all look a bit soft.
