Well as promised a picture from my new 'nifty'. As I have no pets, and cats and dogs seem to featue heavily here, I've had to borrow one of mum and dads dogs for my debut picture in this thread.
His name is Benji, he's four years old and just after taking this shot I realised he had a mark just above the eyes, which, turned out to be a tick burying itself into him. So he has an appointment with the vet first thing tomorrow.
PS
Excuse the gravy around his chops, its leftovers from his Sunday lunch.

Poor dog, great lens though :) I really do not use this lens enough.

I find that this thing is wicked at portraits on a crop when its stepped down a bit...

Yep. I feel like if you pretend it is an f2.5 lens, it is just phenomenal. Sure sometimes you get a lucky f1.8-2 shot, but from f2.5+ the focus and sharpness are MUCH better and can rival the best lenses in output quality.

Just a few from a walk yesterday.....

I think the color from this lens is incomparable. When I want rich, full bodied color this is my "go-to" lens.

Any ideas as to why this lens would be a noticeable amount out of focus when auto focusing using a 450D, but seems perfectly fine on my 50D?

Sounds like the 450D is slightly out. I had the same problem with the 35/2 on my 400D. One of the reasons I got the 50D was to be able to micro focus adjust it to match my primes.
You could send either the camera or lens in to be calibrated. How are your other lenses on the 450D?

You really should send the lens AND both cameras in to Canon together so they can calibrate them to each other.

I don't think they are worth getting used because the price is not that much cheaper and the build on these lenses is not super durable. They go for like $80-85 used and 95-100 new, so might as well pay an extra $10 and get a warranty. The best deal I have seen is for a refurb at Adorama for $89. Their refurbs have the same warranty as new.

yeah thats what i have come to realize after some research on ebay and the like. got a buddy of mine who i bought my 24-70 from for a killer deal and he has a 50 1.8 and no money and no body so he might hook it up pretty good. but yes i need one for sure.

Is the build quality similar to that of a 18-55 kit lenses and/or a 55-250 ?

Mookalafalas
13th of September 2010 (Mon), 20:31
No! lighter (flimsier?) than both, although not much more so than the 18-55. Frankly, I like the cheap body. On a rebel the whole thing becomes so light and small it almost reminds me of using a Panasonic GF1 or something. It's quite fun to shoot with, IMO.

motostu93
13th of September 2010 (Mon), 20:45
sweet. well i have a 18-55 and its good for the money spent. lookin to upgrade to a 40d from my 20d and also get a 55-250

Mookalafalas
13th of September 2010 (Mon), 21:01
Unlike the 50, I'm pretty sure the 55-250 is a pretty good bet used. A lot of people get it as a kit lens and then decide to upgrade to one of the four 70-200Ls, or a similar 3rd party lens. Actually, I got a 70-200 the day before yesterday, but have somewhat mixed feelings about having done so...Its so much heavier, and I already miss the 55-70 range. Anyway, when I switch from the 50 to the new lens, its like I tied a brick around the front of the camera:cry: Anyway, the 50 is a gem. You'll love it, especially if you want to shoot indoors at night time. Crank it down to 1.8 and look through the viewfinder and its just like you're outside in the sun:cool:

Brules, close down the lens. What I mean by that is change the aperture to read a larger number, such as f/8 or f/11. It's probably best to do this in Av mode if you're just starting out.

The fifty always surprises me at what it can do for 100 bucks. It definitely is a utilitarian piece of glass. The subject isolation at intermediate range just can't be beat for the price. I know a lot of people say that its cheap, but as long as you don't drop it on tile, its fine. I beat mine up (not in the dropping sense, but cramming it into bookbags while its on my camera, etc etc) and it hasn't hiccuped yet.

How do you get this effect in Lightroom?

It's mostly the effect of the available light, shot through a window, using a nifty fifty. But I did add local contrast enhancement (the Clarity slider) and more overall contrast, then added a vignette to lead the eye.

I love this one, really nice - did you use a flash aswell?

Cheers! No i didn't use a flash, the light on the handrail you can see if caused by one of those lights that I composed just outside of the frame so it gave the foreground some nice lighting :)

splendid....

thank you good sir!
