I was extremely bored the day before I left for college and decided to take out the 50 1.8. I think both are shot wide open, and the leaf one in full res is my current background. :)

I was convinced that my 50mm was soft or had focus issues so I did a little test and I'm more than happy. When I first opened it up on my computer, it seemed as if the closer I zoomed into 100% the more detail the image began to show. :) ..I did add some sharpening post though.

I was at this local indie show shooting film for the first time on an old Fujica AZ-1, had my rebel, and started taking random pics. It wasn't meant to be sharp, it was mean to be like old school B/W...
It was handheld at like 1/5 of a second... When I saw the shots I was getting, I decided to B/W them and give em a little more of a B/W film underexposed, darker feel...
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4112/5060263283_e35a82537c_b.jpg
They weren't sharp enough for color. 1600 iso on a rebel XT doesn't really allow me to shoot right to get quality color images, so I went for a feel.

Man, these shots are great! I own a 50mm f/1.8 II version as well and this is the lens I have on my camera most of the time. For the price, this lens is awesome. I will try to post some pictures soon!

50mm is a pretty good focal length for volleyball, and I'm surprised how sharp some of the shots were when zoomed in for such a cheap lens at f/2.8.

Thanks! I think it's about a 7/8 crop, shot right from the side of the court.
I think I might have gotten lucky with the AF, or had prefocussed. I'm not sure. But the necessary DOF in volleyball is fairly limited anyway.

is there any significant cahnges+improvements if we bundle this lens with a lens hood??

Totally not worth it to use a hood on this lens, especially the weird and expensive Canon dedicated hood.

Impressive. I must say since the AF sucks so much on this thing patience was key since you probably predetermined where to focus and just waited. I'd do the same honestly if I'm not actually shooting the event. Patience is always key in great photography. You can shoot a 100 shots and get 1 but sometimes it only takes one.
I was reading a book on 40 greatest photos in American History and one was a single shot moment 'cause the photographer waited for hours, shot, left.

nice to see someone else shooting volleyball with this lens. the focus was missing a lot, but when focus is on, you can get some decent shots. one humble advice i have is to crop this photo a little tighter to increase the impact.
50mm is a pretty good focal length for volleyball, and I'm surprised how sharp some of the shots were when zoomed in for such a cheap lens at f/2.8.

I have found that the words sharp and 1.8 can not be used together when describing the "nifty". I keep mine closed down to 2.2 or 2.5 most of the time, its decent then.

Yeah that is true, I think i feel like it is sharp because the focus drop off at 1.8 is dreadful haha.
Yeah at 2.2 I get some very usable shots. I would love to know the processing on the beach shots above!
Here is a picture taken at 1.8 - it is very soft, so that supports your claim good sir. It's SOOC converted to JPG and watermark added.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Very flattered. As for the PP it's all done in Aperture 3 except the layout (triptych) which was done in PS CS3 thanks to this great tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZFg7ESApRI) from JoJo2fast.
When processing in aperture I just play round with levels, curves, saturation, vibrancy etc. I'm also a sucker for vignetting and think I'm in danger of over using it. In short, high contrast, low saturation with a luminance boost for the blue channel.

Yeah the 5D2 is a dream. I really feel it's brought me to the next level. Trouble is now my lust for more expensive glass (possible next purchases = Sigma 15 FE, 24LII, Sigma 50). I must say the nifty sees much more use on the 5D2 than it did on the 450D (used siggy 30).
I was only there for 6 days so was a very short trip. Stayed just outside Carvoeiro and mostly lazed in the sun during the day ( except for the trip to the lighthouse) and went out for dinner every night - you've got some beautiful restaurants there.

Maybe I have a good copy, but I find mine usable from 1.8 all the way up. The fact that Mark uses it on his 5DII, a camera that is great at showing the shortcomings of lenses, with such good results is just further testament to the fantastic optics of such a cheap lens.
The dog photo posted just one or two pages back (http://www.flickr.com/photos/27635537@N02/5087991394/) was at f/1.8. Yes I missed focus a bit (on the bridge of her nose more than her eye), but the part that is in focus is very sharp -- especially in the RAW file (I need to learn how to retain detail in resizing, my web-sized shots are definitely softer than the full-size ones). Not sure if I just got lucky with mine or what, but I've been very happy...

one tip i have learned for these shows, use an iso that is high enough, that you just have to guess on, and then put it in aperture priority mode so that you can use a ss above 125, then put it on spot metering, adjust with exposure compensation, and use that screen for checking exposure. always takes me about 20 pictures before i can usually guess the setting right on for the changing light conditions.

Hello, new poster/photog/nifty user... Have been lurking on this thread for a while now on my Iphone looking at the pics. Just logged in on my Mac and am blown away at how these shots look on a big screen. Just started using my Nifty last week and have found the sweet spot... f2.8- f5.6. Will post some pics when I figure out how! Keep up the good work people!!!!

Just got the lens last week. I love it... Once I found the sweet spot it was game on! Here is a Sample of the sharpness you can achieve with this puppy. I know the composition is not the best (hand cut out etc.) i was just testing sharpness and overall non PP quality. Not edited in any way... 2nd pic is 100% crop. 1/200 at f2.8. ISO 100.

.mark. has some great pics with the 50 1.8 and he is using a 5d2. The last 3 out of 4 pictures of my flickr photostream are using a 5dc.

Congrats! That looks nice and sharp to me. Nice shot...

just got done with a week of concerts. accompanying me to all of them was my 40D and my 50mm f/1.8 mkII. i had no problem getting accurate focus on servo at f/1.8 and iso 500. worked flawlessly.

Kutless. this one is a crop. 50mm is not quite long enough even on a 1.6 sensor. really thinking about upgrading to the 85mm or the 100 mm

Just noticed on my work monitor that I can see an outline around the first guys jacket. My home PC I don't see it at all.

On picture 2 how is it that you have such well formed bokeh? Mine tend to be weird hexagons or pentagons (I haven't actually counted the sides).

That's just how it came out, no special tricks. Only editing is some slight contrast/levels work.

You'll get round bokeh like this if you open the lens all the way up to f/1.8. The hexagons are caused by the blades of the shutter. As you close the lens down more, the more obvious the hexagons become. And this allows you to count the number of blades the shutter has. Which is something you've always wanted to do, right? ;)

Thanks for that. I took some photos at f/1.8 recently that also lacked the typical pentagonal-shaped OOF highlights and was confused (though pleasantly surprised). This makes perfect sense.

50mm f/1.8 @ f/3.5. Just 25 points of sharpening applied in Lightroom 2. I love this little lens!
