I brought my camera to a friend's wedding reception this weekend. There wasn't much lighting so there shots are ISO 1600 and f/2.0, I believe. These turned out OK, especially considering how drunk I was!

Nice shots F-word, my eye must be getting trained, I knew these looked a bit wider than normal - checked your gear list and sure enough 1.3x crop camera. Dang, I'm torn between getting an UWA next or a "normal" for my 1.6x crop, probably the 28 1.8

Thanks. Yes, your observation is quite right. These were from a FF camera. On a 1.6X crop camera, I would be hard-pressed to find a use for the 50mm f/1.8, especially since I don't do portraits.
Even the 50mm focal length is a little tele for me. If I had a 1.6X crop camera and didn't mind splashing the cash out, the 28mm f/1.8 as you mentioned, would be a great choice for the FOV of a 45mm f/1.8 lens.
Ultra-wide work is fun too though. There's always too much to buy and too little money.

You can use the eyedropper tool in your RAW converter. Click on a part of the image that should be white (I also use grey) and go from there. Or you can just manually adjust the color temp sliders. This took less than a minute in LR using the eyedropper tool on the collar. More tweaks can be done of course. I'd probaly further adjust the yellow and red channels and use the recovery tool for the highlights.

Hi Bas,
Unless you are intentionally going for a very shallow depth of field I would try shooting with a smaller aperture (assuming you have the light) and get more of her in focus. For my taste I would want to at least see the tip of her nose to just beyond her eyes in focus, and at times from tip of snout to her ears.

Hi Vitruvius,
You're definitely going to find mixed reviews on this lens but keep things in perspective. The bottom line is that image quality is excellent, bokeh is decent, AF works very well and reasonably fast in moderate to bright light, it's light, and look at all the happy owners in this and other forums that recommend it and can show beautiful images taken with it.
Rarely, if ever do you find someone complaining about image quality, and if they do it most often refers to the bokeh or softness when the lens is wide open. Many lenses, including the big brother of the 50mm f/1.8 (the 50mm f/1.4) are soft when wide open.
The lens housing is made of plastic and the overall build quality is not that of lenses 4 or 5 times the price BUT don't let that fool you. Depending on your experience, needs and budget it's not only a great lens for the money but it's a great lens, and certainly an outstanding lens to learn with and get a feel for focal length and depth of field.

A few examples with the EXIF data would probably help us determine this. You might, however, want to post that in a new thread so as not to clutter this one up. I know personally that I rarely edit my pics aside from fixing white balance a little or the exposure, although I cannot speak for everybody else.
Here's a few more I took today with no correction at all:

I'll be the first to admit that these obviously aren't perfect like #2 is a little underexposed, but on the other hand, I'm no expert so these are reasonable expectations you should have for unprocessed images with this lens at about f/8-9.

I've owned a couple of these and both were sharpest at 5.6, but were very sharp from 2.8 on. Performance wide open is surprisingly good.
The PhotoZone MTF numbers indicate maximum at 5.6, and losing sharpness by stopping down smaller than 5.6. The MTF for F8 is about the same as F4.
I would think by F13 diffraction would be negatively affecting the inage quality as well.

Hi Misty,
I do a little post-processing on all my photographs - that includes levels or curves, saturation (or desaturation, like B&W conversion) and sharpness adjustments. If your photos look relatively dull and "uninteresting" right out of the camera, try Auto-Levels - you may be surprised how much different (hopefully better) the picture will look after that.
I also like Velvia-like colors, so in my color photograps I often use the Velvia-Provia Photoshop action and then adjust the strength of the effect.
Hope it helps ;)

I always shoot raw rather than jpeg and that gives me the opportunity to fine tune my photographs for WB, exposure, crop/rotate etc. with no loss of quality. I use Lightroom for my editing as I'd rather keep things simple and Photoshop is way over the top for my needs.

I love both dog shots above especially the full body shot! ;) The full body shot is a bit centered but it is a nice shot. however.
Keep shooting! I love this lens as well.

Thanks for the feedback Yanis, much appreicated :) . I agree the full body picture is very centered, there was three dogs together playing so when the chance came up I just shot. At the moment I am just shooting everything as each frame teaches me something, got to learn to slow down a bit and compose the shots. I probably should go a few steps back and use the auto modes more as I am playing with the creative zones and RAW files.
Loving this forum though, gives you so much valueable info.

It really depends on what the aperture and shutter speed are set to. It also depends on what you are trying to get a picture of. This lens is very good if you use it within its limits:

Yeah MaxxuM I had a look at it some time ago but felt if it is suppose to be such an important lens... at least we keep hearing about 'nifty fifty' I thought it should be in the public domain longer. It is a basic lens and photographers appear to produce some amazing shots with it. I wasn't wrong on that point as sandro9mm and mcminty have proved. Truely excellent shots that they should be proud of. So MaxxuM what can you show us?
Eventually every question about lenses, kit etc will be duplicated (except for new releases of course but given time they will too), but this is 'the' only lens that no one as yet has ever 'said a bad thing about', unless I missed something? I'm always interested in other photographers views on the subject.
And lets face it can we ever have enough quality pics on this subject from members?
Please keep them coming.. I genuinely am looking forward to seeing what can be produced with this lens.... anything really different?

Hi MattS.
I think that is why I am so amazed by all the good publicity concerning this inexpensive little lens. There are some superb pics out there and some awful ones. They all use the same lens so is the lens really that great or is it the photographer that really holds the key to this one?

This is a rhetorical question, right? Or does anyone really think that using a lens - ANY lens - would automatically result in great photos?
Sharp != great.

I havent used my 50/1.8 in the last 4 years. Doesnt fit my shooting style. On a crop sensor, a 24mm or 28mm would be the ideal prime for me - and so I have the 24mm which I dont use either :)
As for the question - I hope I know the answer to that, but sometimes, I really do wonder whether I am in the minority there.

What I was trying to get across (and yeah I know I did it badly is this), out there in photo land there are some very good pics and some very bad ones. Pick up any Photo Magazine and try and find some shots with a 50mm f1.8. We know the members of this forum can take great pics with it as they have proved. But there doesn't appear to be any in the mags. Why?
Could this be a class thing going on with lenses?
