This lens has been basically glued to my camera for the past few weeks. I just love the sharpness of it over my kit lens. A few more taken today using the nifty fifty:

The caramel apple picture above was taken using two up-close filters to try and create more of a macro-like shot which also makes it surprisingly tricky to focus the object and hold the focus on it when shooting hand-held.

The last one looks... overcompressed?

NYVintner
7th of November 2010 (Sun), 17:18
Not sure what you mean by overcompressed, but it's a shot down an arrow mounted on my bow, with the focus obviously on the broadhead. I'm just learning where all the settings are on this thing and haven't learned where all the focusing settings are. I went with manual focus on this and although my meter showed a good exposure it still didn't turn out as sharp as I wanted it to - some pp going on there and maybe I overdid it.

exposure really doesn't have much to do with sharpness, unless you are shooting high iso and the detail is compromised... which isn't the case here since you used 100. you shot looks kinda mushy or like it was painted. what did the original look like?

NYVintner

I thought it was overexposed and not as sharp as I wanted it.

I think I want to try this shot again but this time stopping the lens down to bring the whole bow much more in focus, while still concentrating on the broadhead.

http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/7225/histof.jpg

judging from what i see in the photo and on this histo, i wouldn't call it over-exposed... just a bit on the bright side. Anyways i would try this shot on a tripod with a timed release and MLU. Your DOF is so narrow and your target is so small that there is virtually no room for error. Also make sure to use 'Spot AF'.

good luck ;)

Well I really didn't intend to get a shot of the bow - I wanted a closeup of the broadhead and have the bokeh gradually increase as it goes down the shaft of the arrow. How would you guys have done it?

well the closer you get to the broadhead the more OOF everything behind it would be. If you have a longer lens, say a 85 1.8 that would also provide a more narrow DOF. And obviously if you had a macro lens or extension tubes they would have also gave the desired effect you were looking for.

Buy one if you don't have anything in your bag that is better than f2.8 . What can you lose if you don't like it, $90? My only suggestions is to go with the 50 1.4 if you need a fast focus...the usm and build quality are much nicer than the 1.8.

Know these are not real good, but I took these on my parents deck where they have a bird feeder hanging off the side. I sat down and shot thru the railing. Just glad the birds still flew up to it with me that close. Like to get a longer lens like the 85mm or another 70-200 zoom lens wouldve been better. I dont think they are too bad!

Hi Gary, your picture of the St Paul's across the Thames is really nice :) and something I'd have on my wall! I like the fact the cranes are in front of the cathedral as they mix a little modern with old and made me think about how the cathedral was actually built (as in probably not with cranes like that)...

After shopping around for a deal on one of these (EF 50mm f/1.8 ) I finally gave up and bought one at regular price from B&H. I have to say that I'm amazed at how hard it is to find a deal on one of these lenses used. By deal I mean more than $10 off of retail. I'm also surprised at how fast people snatch these up in the classified section at $85-$100 when you can get a brand spankin new one shipped to your door form B&H for $99.99? And that's for a USA model with full warranty!

Never the less, I am excited to get this bad boy just in time for the holidays!

Second one is also straight out camera. Flash was used though, and a slight contrast boost :)

JackAsh, I love your first picture... Was it an extremely bright day? I don't seem to get any of them here :(

Thank you! Yes, it was very bright. I had to block the sun with my hand to be able to focus..

Jack might I suggest moving that post to the glamour and nude forum. I'm no prude but I think its a little more revealing then what should probably be posted here :)

Sorry, didn't take that into consideration. Will be more aware next time.

Brilliant work Jack! Love backlit shots!

Thank you! I really dig your 1st picture of the sprocket, and that car is just pure sweetness.

Doesn't bother me, but I think it's probably a complaint related to the sheerness of the tank top. A little inconvenient "darkening."

In my opinion: yes, there is a woman's body under those clothes. The horror.

As I said. I don't mind it. Just think that people do view this site from their jobs and there is a place for those pictures :P

True, you never know. Could be much much worse though.
