Kain, you really make the 50 sing! I'm quite jealous.

Thanks! It's by far my favorite lens. I don't really see a worthy replacement apart from the 50mm F/1.2L, but that's out of reach. I'd go with the 85mm f/1.8, but the focal length is quite awkward on a 40D.

Which do you recommend?
If you want ETTL, then get a 430ex, like stated earlier. If you don't need TTL then get something cheaper. I never shoot in TTl anyways because I'm always shooting in Manual mode.
Hey cutie ;)

Easy, I have a g/f you know. ;)

Noori, great idea on the two image collage. My only thoughts are:

1) In your first image the two halves have no relationship. I see a kite and a kid in a what looks to be a squash court. If the image was of the child flying the kite then it would be perfect.

2) In your second pair the candle is not level. At this angle it does not look deliberate. However, I do love the colour palette you chose.

AbPho, Beginning Thank you very much, really appreciate your opinion and ideas submitted to me a very beautiful.
1-There is the image of the child playing with the same kite, but I wanted to juggle between two different images, their similarities suggest an indirect way, I hope that you understand my idea.
2-The second image I agree with you completely, colors much better than the angles.

I apologize if you were not good for my English, My language is very simple

Hi kids!

Just got the Nifty in the mail today (finnnnalllyyyyy). This thread is incredible inspiring! I have it on my Rebel XS. It's super weird to try not to manually turn the lens as I'm used to with my kit lens. It will take some getting used to. But I look forward to playing around with it and getting some shots up here. :)

Nice shots again, but IMO they suffer a bit from "noontime shadows." I think they would benefit from some fill flash to lighten the unflattering shadows that mar your otherwise lovely model's face. :)

Not when used outdoors in the daylight, it'll be "fill light" and will brighten up the subject's face quite nicely.... try it one day.

I do have 1 shot where I tried using the flash. Unfortunately, I didn't like it because the light from the flash was much more white than the sunset around us, but a little PP made it better. This was just a snap, obviously. I don't think It looks natural at all :/

Yeah. In that shot she is back-lit, so her face is underexposed, and if you use the flash in that situation, you are right, it's likely to overblow and look nasty. "Fill-flash" is when you use flash when your subject is in bright sunlight, but there are little "pockets" of unwanted shadow (eye-sockets, under the nose, jaw, the bottom of some leaves, whatever) and the flash light is mostly "swallowed" by the natural light, but manages to fill in the little dark bits. Well, in theory, anyway. Can't say as I am an expert on it. I hide from mid-day sun, usually:)

I shall try it sometime soon. These past two outings have been at later times, just before sunset, so the sun is much harsher than at noon.

I do have 1 shot where I tried using the flash. Unfortunately, I didn't like it because the light from the flash was much more white than the sunset around us, but a little PP made it better. This was just a snap, obviously. I don't think It looks natural at all :/

http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/8320/mg3799.th.jpg[/URL]

Any tips on how to make this technique more natural with natural light?

just played with levels. my monitor is not calibrated and i do not know how it might look on your monitor. i liked the backlight effect illuminating hair and the flare, well, people might see it as a disadvantage in a lens and others might feel it artistic, depends on your taste. hope you like the post process, otherwise just ignore this reply

I just got mine yesterday. I took it out the box, clicked it onto my 7D, and set it to 1.8. Wow, that's shallow DOF. I'm looking forward to the weather clearing up and playing around outside. The picture of the box, lighting by my desk lamp, is all I have for now.

Cute pics. Flash is too harsh though. I'd recommend either bouncing the flash, really lowering the intensity, or just shooting natural light.

or a bounce card....

I'm not too please with "natural light" shots, they usually lack luster, or have the dull look, unless of course you bounce natural light with a reflector to fill the shadow areas more naturally but for that you need a second set of hands.

Well, you need good natural light, of course. Peterson's got a whole book full of great natural light shots w/out reflectors :)

this is how I would have framed the first one ( I had a little fun with PS so ignore the PP), but less background distraction works better for most portraits IMO:

Hereīs our new dude! "Dibs". He is 1 year and 7 months old. He has been relocated to us since his former owner didnīt have the time for him anymore. Heīs a lovely guy. He came to us yesterday and I couldnīt take any outdoor pics due to bad weather. So I just took some snaps inside. ISO 2000 and to large aparteure due to bad lightning. More and hopefully better pics will come;)

Best regards/Daniel

I agree with the other comment....the framing is a little off. It could be due to using the tripod and guessing but take a moment and have a subject stand where you're shooting so you can get the whole subject framed. Also, in my opinion, it's always best to shoot more surrounding than you think you need that way if and when you crop you have plenty to work with.

I've got a question about some bokeh pics I took.

In these first two, there is a black mark at about "4 o'clock" in the blobs - would this be dirt on the sensor, or on the lens? Or just some unexplained coincidence?:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y141/kobeson/IMG_2384b.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y141/kobeson/IMG_3063.jpg

I took these 2 shots about 2 weeks earlier. In this first one, the blobs seem to have a shadow, would this just be lights behind lights of the same colour? (also the red one to the right which I didn't point to):

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y141/kobeson/IMG_2385.jpg

In this one, the red blob to the left looks a bit faded - is this perhaps a shutter speed error, or just a fault of the cheap lens? Also, the two blobs to the right have something else going on, not sure what?:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y141/kobeson/IMG_2384.jpg

I am possibly being fastidious, and am relatively new to this lens still - but the bokeh shots I see in this thread don't have these errors in them, and look as smooth as the nifty fifty can produce. I know the bokeh is famous for being rough compared to more expensive lenses, but am just curious if anybody can help me out here.

Not sure about the 'dirt' ones, but the others look like they are just like that because of how the light is hitting the lens.

I see what you mean, is not dirt on the sensor, that will always show in the same location. I actually don't see a problem with the photos, they look nice and I just think that those things you pointed out are just part of the image an artifact if you want to call it that.

Ok, seems like the bottom 2 pics are just coincidence then, that is great to hear :-)

If you have a look at the "dirt" pics again, they seem to be in a similar point of each blob - that is why i though maybe dirt on the sensor?

I can't explain it, and I can't recall if the lights all had a physical object blocking them in the same point - those 2 shots were taken out in the street.

Thanks for both of your comments, I should take some more shots with my fifty to see if it happens again - I guess this will prove if there is a problem or if they were just coincidence.

Took this today with the nifty fifty + Raynox DCR 250:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y141/kobeson/IMG_3383b.jpg

It's a composite of 2 shots, hard to get much in focus! Also a bit of PP to get exposure corrected (must buy external flash and diffuser).

This is another gem by Canon like EFs 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. Both these lenses are priced very reasonably although both are superlative performers in their intended conditions. The 1.4 version of 50mm is almost 3 times pricier whereas one will have to scrutinize minutely to distinguish between the images. The cheapie is made of plastic with plastic mount. However, that is never an issue unless you are a pro. This lens makes me wonder - if manufacturers can turn out and offer such qualities at affordable prices; why the hell they charge outrageous figures for some other lenses !!!

I bought the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II recently for my occasional portraiture work and happily declare that I'm more than highly satisfied with its performances. Will return with some images.

The 55-250 mm is a good performer, however the 50 is exceptional!

I look forward to seeing more of the beauty here, a lot of recent work is truly beautiful and inspiring.
I liked the pictures of children in particular.

Good luck to all who bought this lens.:)

That would suggest dirt on the lens or imperfections in the coating, not something on the sensor.

I bought the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II recently for my occasional portraiture work and happily declare that I'm more than highly satisfied with its performances. Will return with some images.

I think if narrows down to features, capabilities, and how much an individual is willing to pay for them.

50mm 1.8: Approx $95-125 USD, 6 elements in 5 groups, f/1.8, micromotor, plastic housing w/plastic connector, may hunt fairly heavily in low light, slow auto-focus

50mm 1.4: Approx $340-$380 USD, 7 elements in 6 groups, f/1.4. USM, metal connector, full time manual focus, distance scale to infinity, average speed auto-focus

50mm 1.2: Approx $1500 USD, 8 elements in 6 groups (cleanest bokeh of the three), f/1.2, USM, L quality weather-resistant construction w/metal connector, AF w/full time manual, distance scale to infinity, quick auto-focus, less drop-off on MFT charts, includes hood and bag

Considering I'm not a professional photographer, I can't see any reason to spend the extra money for the higher 2 lenses. The performance of the Nifty is more than tolerable as I'm not worried about missing the perfect low-light shot for a client, the output is terrific (I even like the non-uniform bokeh it produces), the price is phenomenal for a lens that performs the way it does (I've used my nifty almost exclusively to shoot some outdoor senior portraits with excellent results), and the weight is completely unnoticeable. The ONLY thing I'd personally like from the top model is better sealing as dust always tends to creep in eventually. But I can go through 12 of these at the cost of the f/1.2 L version. And for a hobbyist, the savings allows a lot of extra lenses and accessories. For nearly the same cost of a 50mm f/1.2, I could grab a 70-200 f/4 IS, Nifty-50 and a Nifty-250.
