I've been serious about photography for about 4 years now and still consider myself a beginner and in my opinion this is excellent advice. I read "Understanding Exposure" right at the beginning and this on its own was a big boost to my understanding of photography. I wish I'd had a DSLR and a nifty fifty right at the beginning, too. Learning how to capture the light while controlling the depth of field is probably easiest on a fixed-focus lens. Learn the "rules" of framing and then work out how to break them gracefully then get creative with your subject matter and after about another 100 years of practice you'll be a photographer. ;)

Thanks guys, PP involved a bit of playing with curves and contrast, I accentuated the colors in some places with color overlays, and added some red around the hotspots to simulate film burning. The reason the sunflare looks the way it does is because I shot at very large apertures.

Mark42,Welcome.
A good start with the lens, and focus you have a wonderful.
-If you have experience in photoshop,Aia is in getting a better picture by manipulating color and remove impurities.
-When you view the image in the forums is best to put the proper size of the image, do not be too large nor too small.

Here's one from my 30D with the 50mm f1.8. For $80 out the door it's a pretty good lens. Beats the kit lens lens, hands down, but no where near as nice as my 300mm f2.8 IS.

Where do I buy one for $80?

You go back in time to 2006 when that image was posted and buy one almost anywhere for $79 retail. Back then exchange rates heavily favored the US dollar. Now, not at all.

Not necessarily, you may have just focused on the wrong point. Try the shot again with manual focus on the first doll and see if you can get it sharper.
The camera may have auto-focused elsewhere.

The focus on those shots are definitely off, unless it was blurred through Post Processing? Even at 1.8, this lens should be muuuuuch sharper than that. Looks like the focus point is somewhere in front of the first doll.

:lol: Thanks everyone. They aren't my cats, but my g/f wants one. They are the most lovable cats I've ever seen and they are ugly, but cute. Here is a collection of photos she used for her photo of the day, where the mother looks nicer. The mother cat was not happy w/ the dog and the 'father' kitty, that was the look I captured, or maybe I just got lucky. ;)
