No, it's just that I always think of using Highlight Priority on a sunny day when there's a lot of contrast, i.e. larger number of f-stops between the highlights and shadows, when I want to retain as much highlight detail as possible. It hadn't occurred to me to use it with snow until I saw how much detail you'd captured in your pictures. Mind you, I don't go out much in snow, let alone take my camera out... :)

Ahaa! Okay. Well, I have actually never used it, but I might try it sometime. I always shoot in Raw. Don´t know if it would work when shooting raw?

It won't make any difference to a RAW file, no, but it will affect the preview on the LCD. I set up the Picture Style I use most so that the picture displayed on the LCD is close to the way I'm most likely to want the RAW to look after I process it. If the resulting highlights don't have enough detail in them, sometimes I'll switch on Highlight Priority without changing any other settings and then take another shot to get some idea if there's enough detail there for Lightroom to bring out. If both shots don't have enough detail in the highlights, I'll alter the exposure compensation to get the shot I want. I don't do this very often as I live in the UK where the weather is only really sunny for a couple of months in the year.

To continue my learning process, would one stop smaller (larger F-number) been enough to have brought that into focus?

And if so, how would it have changed the background, if at all?

Thanks,

yep a smaller aperture would have helped but i'd have to have changed focus point & an aperture to get the whole plant in focus wouldn't have blurred the background as it did.

This is an opinion call. Personally, I like it as is. The extra f stop would increase the DOF (depth of field) and perhaps brought more branches into focus, but would have also diminished the nice out of focus (oof) look of the houses.

^^^^

I might be wrong in my understanding but -

as the houses appear to be very far away from the branches, a larger f number might not have affected the bokeh that dramatically ie, the houses would still be oof

Great shots Claire, you nailed the focus in the eyes spot on. I see so many shots with out of focus eyes due to people using too large an aperture to blur the background, and they end up missing the target.....

A couple of feet to the left and that branch would have been behind the in-focus one. But I think the picture looks great the way it is.

I thought I'd have a go at a portrait. My nephew was the unfortunate 'victim' I'm sorry about the background, he kept pulling faces everytime I pointed my camera at him. I couldn't capture him in front of a white wall, so this was the only snap I could use !!!

The fifty is great for street shots. He's waiting at a bus stop under a railway bridge. The coloured lines aren't on a poster, they seem to be decorative and extend the length of the tunnel. The traffic cone was probably left there by someone who'd had a little too much to drink. There, I've gone and explained all the fun out of it. :-)

some pics from today. I tried similar shots with my tamron 28-75 and sigma 10-20. But pics from canon 50mm 1.8 is really nice.

Damn, this doesn't even compare to any of the photos in here, but this is my favorite shot I've taken on my nifty. This was shot on a 10D!

Derek, there is nothing wrong with your shot! I imagine it was cold so you wanted to shoot and get back in the warm but next time try some different angels etc.

But... I think it is quite a good shot :)
