Hi. Thank you all for these amazing pictures. It seems outstanding that superb portraits, landscapes and close-ups could all be achieved with one little inexpensive lens. Those portraits are excellent and I like farmdog fan's landscape. His big boy lens must have cost a fortune unlike the 50mm.

Static Thought even though you signed as Chris I really hoped that was a picture of you for your avatar. (Ex-forces engineer... I'm guessing Christopher and not Christine?). What a disappointment.

I've had the opportunity to play with the lens (I have the f/1.4 version, but had Nifty for a while on his travels).

Optically and IQ wise, the f/1.8 is a very fine lens indeed, as can be seen by this and the official archive.

However, what does mark it down slightly is the build quality. It's very light, rattles slightly when you sake it, and feels like a kids toy (it even whirrs when you focus).

That's the only thing against it that I can see.

Combining the posts wasn't designed to "keep you down for 1 minute". It was to make sure that others that want to view and/or contribute their shots could do so in one thread that was easy to find over and over again without a search.

vkalia.
What I was trying to get across (and yeah I know I did it badly is this), out there in photo land there are some very good pics and some very bad ones. Pick up any Photo Magazine and try and find some shots with a 50mm f1.8. We know the members of this forum can take great pics with it as they have proved. But there doesn't appear to be any in the mags. Why?

I imagine it would be due to one or more of the following reasons:

1/ Most professionals use zooms for their added versatility. The quality difference is negligible when it comes to saleability of an image, and the zoom lets you get a particular framing/perspective without too much futzing around. I used to carry my 50/1.8 around but rarely bother anymore. At $60, I couldnt be ar$ed trying to sell it, but it doesn't get any use either.

2/ The 50mm is a bit of a "boring" viewpoint (and on a crop body, it is also not very useful except as a portrait lens). A lot of street photography is done with WAs (28mm or 35mm), and again, from a selling point of view, an extreme perspective or focal length makes an image more saleable.

You don't see too many images made with primes these days anyway.

You don't need a tripod, just something smaller than f/1.8.

Try that same shot at f/11.

To get the most out of this lens, you should really be shooting f/4 and above - the noticable loss of sharpness before f/4 is bad, but above f/4 there isn't a huge gain in sharpness (compared to the loss in overall usability in low light).

This picture was taken from about 3 feet away, the only light was from a 200 watt Torchiere lamp 4 feet or so behind me. I only have the built in flash and i don't like to use it, i think it messes up the colors to much. The only pp done to this picture was, i loaded it into DPP, set the white balance to tungsten and the picture style to portrait i then converted it to a jpg and loaded it into Paint Shop Pro x cropped it and saved it. I purchased this lens on friday and i am very pleased with it so far.

I love this lens because you can be discrete. I go to a wedding or birthday party and leave my flash at home. My photos come out better than p&s and guys with kit lens and flash. It's short, looks cheap and people that don't know won't give you big lens attention. I took a basic photography course with this lens and it was perfect. I didn't have to factor in zoom control so I was able to work solely on exposure and composition.

You won't regret that lens. You'll hear people saying about its limitations, but all lens have limits... so enjoy it for what it is... a really good quality budget lens that has flexibility.
Post some more when you can.

I would like to try if i got kenko tubes but i have canon extension tubes and i think i tried it on either 50 1.4 or 1.8 but i didn't post anything, and the result is great ofcourse, those lenses are so sharp and the tubes will not decrease the sharpness at all, it is designed to make lens for close-up working distances only.

Someone requested some photos with Kenko extension tubes?

I just quickly set this up as in the first photo. I know, not ideal, but I did this on quick notice. :)

Here is the set up. Canon 20D with all 3 extension tubes, the 50mm 1.8, and my portable macro stand. The only lighting was from my fluorescent work light. I was sort of curious what this would give me for lighting. Camera was on mirror lock and I used the cable release.

Did you mean the lens works fine at f2.5 ONLY or that was all you could say about it?

If you feel it ONLY works fine at f2.5 then I would have to disagree with you as many on this post can testify. I'm sure if it were put to the test and some of the 50mm 1.8 shots were held up against other shots you wouldn't 100% know what was shot with what.

For its price its almost unbeatable.

Canon EOS 66 + 50/1.8 + Agfa ULTRA 100 negative

This is an all-round lens with affordable price. It is not sharp at wide open but at f/2.8 it shows it value. In terms of Bokeh it is not as good as 50 1.4 nor 50 1.2. Thanks to the large aperture, it is ideal for indoor photography. The only bad thing is its barrel. It may break into pieces someday.

Dont waste your time and money on this crappy fifty, I used one long time a go and now , it is literaly broken a part without special abuse on it.

The bokeh is harsh and bad , the sharpness is bad until stop it down to F4 .

so if you need a 50 , get the 1.4 , but I think most of guys now no need it since a 17-5x xooms are quaite sharp , my Tamorn, EF17-40L and Canon EF-S17-55 are all definitely much sharper than this crappy lens , and give me alot more freedom to zoom , there is no such a thing "zooming with your feets" , cause this changes the perspective sgnificantly.

I like my 85 and EF-S60 , they are insanely sharp , but if you buy a Nifty Crappy, you will never use it because of the crop factor ; this lens would be like 80mm lens on a Rebel and 30D series.
I've had 2 bodies of 400D and one 30D but I really think the so-called Nifty is useless on all my cameras and hard to sale , it is still on my desk just because no one takes it .

It is 80 US maybe , but 80 USD is still a bit of money and you dont want to just throw it a way for nothing, I guess.

This lens never do good portraits since the bokeh is horrible.

DerekI
13th of August 2007 (Mon), 12:47
Also, the 17-55IS has horrible out of focus area , and well , I say the 85 is the better choice for a crop body.

But if you really need a cheap 50 equivalent lens for a crop body , get the 28 f1.8.
Note : the Sigma 30 is horrible , with horrible corner sharpness and can not do close-up.

A lot of people dismiss it because of its price and build quality. There is this mentality that to have good glass, you have to pay around a thousand or more for it.

It truly is the best little gem in the Canon line.

PS That chick is stuffed:lol:

I had a heck of a time getting that chick to stay still...you have no idea haha.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, the 50 1.8 is really a nice lens for the price.
