Just a lens... Taken with my nifty fifty
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5256/5511367637_f44857d159_z.jpg
A portrait shot
Shot wide open at 1.8mm. This was done on purpose to render the far shoulder OOF and have a really blurred Bokeh...

Who thinks the nifty 50 is just fine for street photography on a 1.6 crop body?
I do. I tend to prefer close-ups rather than wide-angle shots.

But then it all depends on what I point it at:

What do you mean? Nifty-fifty coming out as winner. According to what criterion?
Correct focus and sharpness. Bokeh may be better on the images shot with faster versions however, it will matter little if focus and sharpness fall behind.;)

What does Bokeh stand for? Is it a acronym? Thanks. Total noob here. Trying to decide whether to get this lens or a decent tripod.
Nevermind. I did a quick google.
Bokeh: The blur or the aesthetic quality of the blur, in out-of-focus areas of an image, or "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light

Is it necessary to protect nifty fifty with UV filter? Who has it?
garryknight

I you mean protect the glass from cracking, no, it's not necessary (in my opinion). The front element is recessed almost half an inch inside the front of the lens.

i would recommend a UV filter on all of your glass regardless of cost. :D I bought a used one for under five bucks and serves its purpose well, protect the glass.

Wouldn't a UV for under $5 ruin the shots?!?
I have $40-$50 UV filters on my other lenses, and have taken test shots with/without the filters and noticed no difference. But I question a $5 filter though? Maybe I am wrong, I am just guessing...
I don't have a UV on my 50 1.8, as the lens is so cheap already, I didn't see the point - and as mentioned, the glass is set back a fair bit.

my 5 dollar UV filter glass is really nice actually, scored quite a deal on a used one. I've noticed no difference in image quality.

For the book pic, 580exII mounted on camera and bounced off ceiling + 430EXII behind a thick black sheet, so that only a 1/4th of the flash is visible. Increased contrast/highlight/sharpness in DPP. Crop. Apply cross process preset in lightroom.
For the flower pic, natural light. same changes as book pic in DPP. Crop. Applied COL COLOR INFRARED preset in lightroom to make it look different.

What do you mean "correct the focusing issues" you've been having recently - Did you send it in for a calibration, is it 100% (or at least close) accurate now?

I managed to micro-adjust my lenses to match the body. I can't afford to send it to canon yes because I need it for work until early April, so for now I will rely on my 5d2 and hopefully not need the 1d3 as a backup.

:) I didn't know this was possible, and I all of a sudden feel a bit better that this lens can be tamed. Is it through the feature similar to the 7D micro-adjust? or is it done manually by tinkering with the lens itself?

It's exactly like the 7d's feature. The 1d3 was the first camera to implement the micro-adjust feature. My most used lenses are my 85L and 24-70L and both were performing poorly on my 1d3, so I used the feature to temporarily correct them.
I feel that I will have to send it to canon as soon as I get a chance to, and if they are unable to do much with it I will try to trade the camera for another 5d2
