I'm still waiting to test out this lens, but i'm not sure on what yet. I would primarily be using it for action sports photography, but seeing as it's raining in Sydney today i can't . Anyone have any ideas what i can shoot in the house? Other than a simply still-life? I'd love to try out a technique someone can recommend with new lighting and what not?
Also, i'm the only one home, so no portraits of anyone except myself
Ideas?

Try some pack shots from your cupboards. try some unusual angles of obvious items (printers, hi fi etc), fill a glass vase with water add some colouring and try blowing bubbles through it, try the same with cooking oil, light a candle or joss stick and experiment shooting the smoke or flame, shoot the rain on the window, run a tap and capture moving water.... man there are so many things to play with you should never be bored.
Good luck.

You can do some amazing things with this lens. You can play with the DOF to a reasonable extent. However, sometimes you want a sharp foreground and an unsharp background, without suffering too much from a larger F as the big mediator.
Here's what you get from standard F22 with slower shutter speed (bit unsharp)
http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/5083/plantenyd3.jpg
The trick would be to use low F's, make a set of pictures while changing the focus manually in gradual steps, and stack them together with a program like CombineZ.
Result

Sharp foreground, very unsharp background (although close to the subject).
Nice toy to play with, the 50mm and a PC.
there was a slight wind in my backyard, you can see some ghosting in the flowers and the spider web thread. Furthermore, notice that the unsharp area is not as smoothly unsharp as one would wish. It can always be better in life.

This lens never do good portraits since the bokeh is horrible.
But bokeh is not important in studio photography where most shots are taken at f/8-f/11.

Exactly. I saw some photographers using cheap zoom lens in studio. The results are impressive: very sharp and detail. :D

The only bad thing is its barrel. It may break into pieces someday.
A guy dropped his normal lens a few days ago. I also heard some reports in which the lens broken down without a drop.

Clearly the trick here is not to drop your kit but to look after it. It would be bad enough dropping the 50 1.8 but at the price its easy to replace without breaking the bank.... but can you imagine how you'd feel if it was the 50 1.2?
and yes the 1.2 will break if you drop it even though the build quality is better.
Just in case all you 1.8 er's out there think they have a fragile lens on the camera... I did drop mine on my decking... but it wasn't affected at all. Guess I was lucky or perhaps the build isn't quite as poor as we imagine.
Either way I'd rather replace a 1.8 than a 1.2... unless the Lottery comes up.
Keep the faith with ya Nifty fifty's and post more... It is great seeing such brilliant results on this post.
PS StaticThought Love those portrait shots.

I think it's funny that people worry about the plastic mount on the 50mm 1.8. For the size and weight of the lens who cares. You would be amazed at the amount of plastic holding the engine in your car together!

Hi Bas.... I have UV filters on all my lenses.... even the cheapy nifty fifty. I use Hoya PRO1's coz they are nice and thin. There are debates all over this forum about the validity of using UV filters or not.... but mine is for peace of mind and protection.
Have used various other filter manufacturers in the past but have stuck to Hoya over recent years as I have never had any problems with them.

I rarely use this lens other than to play with outside. Has anyone used it indoors with much success? Any value in use at a wedding????

If it doesn't get too dark for the AF too work well with this lens, yes. Despite the large opening, it tends to hunt in (very) low light, especially with low contrast. The Mk I is better with regard to AF in low light, but it is noisier.
Low light is relative, though. At 1/50s, F/1.8, 800 iso it was coping well with reasonably contrasty subjects, I found.
Kind regards, Wim

Just a 350D :), no fullframe for me. Moving the subject away from the background a bit helps.

i thought mine sucked at first, i just was not used to the shallow DOF. for the first couple of days i would get things that looked really oof. then i started to get a little bit better image when i took my time with it. ill upgrade to the 1.4 someday. but this is good for now, and i use it as my main lens most of the time.

I guess this post has proved the fifty f1.8 is probebly the best value for money lens in its class. I am so glad I bought mine. Its a permanent carry around lens. Can't see me ever paying tons extra for a 1.4.
I know it has complaints coz of its build.... but it has to be the results that count.
Keep em coming.

Right, I'm convinced. Off to Photo Continental I go!
Can someone explain to me why these things are going for $125 AUD including shipping 2nd hand on eBay, but you can get a brand new one from PC for $10 more?
Guess some buyers on eBay don't exactly do their research.

you need to use BB code ([ img ] tags) rather than HTML.
The 50 1.8 is currently my favourite lens (although a Tamron 17-50 2.8 might change that). I find that with a flash (Sigma EF 500 DG Super for the budget-minded) it is an excellent performer. Tilt the flash, stop down to F/4-F/8 and you can take some amazing photos.
