rgb,
Just wondering why you are shooting iso 160 and not iso 100, since your shutter speeds are through the roof, you can afford the 2/3 stop slower shutter speed, and especially since there is no movement??
just a dumb question.
I always use 160 ISO. On a 30D ISO 160 is the lowest noise signature that's a good enough reason for me!

ISO 3rds on the 30D are simulated, correct? So 160 is actually ISO 200 underexposed 1/3rd stop. Makes sense that it'd have less noise. Kinda interesting :)

I don't see why they would be simulated. A sensor is an analogue device, thus it can have an infinite number of output levels. Running at different ISO should not be difficult.
ISO160 happens to be a useful division I find anyway, and the noise is about the same as ISO100.

I did and now it is tack sharp. Send it to canon to have re-calibrated. They might ask you for the camera too.

The work was done under warranty. If the lens is not under warranty. I will ask them, since it is such a low cost lens that it mmmight be more cost efective to get a new one.

Hello,
New to this forum and just moved from a Canon A540 to a 400D so new to DSLR as well. Ive been really enjoying this thread and it inspired me to get the 50mm f1.8 MkII (after a week on e-bay noting that they all sell for close to the new Amazon UK price I went with the new £67 shipped).
So Two shots from my first half hour with it :-

Thanks for detail, j1 - makes it clear, especially for beginners (like me!)
I just used Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, selected Image.Add Border and selected the first colour, then repeated, adjusted size and colour for second. I didn't bother with a resize, although your tute outlines this clearly, including the benefits.
Pretty effective, for a simple action.

So I like how crisp the pics come out. I dont like how cheap it feel being all plastic feels like I got it in ahappy meal.

Hey Robert, to me it looks as if your roses are over exposed or too saturated, there are parts that show up in one shade of red. As if you degraded the image into 256 colors. Maybe it's just my eyes, but it looks unnatural.

Got this lens a couple weeks ago and I haven't put it down since. It's by far the most fun lens out of any of mine and yet the cheapest by a ridiculous amount. This also happens to be my first picture posting in this forum.

The quality of shots makes you feel like you have an expensive lens on the front. Shame it feels a little flimsey. Needless to say you will get so much from this lens for the money.
There should be room in everyones camera bag for this little beauty.

please do not waste your money on this junk.
it hunts foever in LL .
it is not sharp , or less sharp than the EF-S17-55f2.8 at f2.8 , and it is basically too long for most of indoor shots on a crop.
get a 35f2 or a ef28f1.8 USM , they last longer focus faster , though a bit more expensive than this junky toy .........but if you 'll have to sell it and need to put on Ebay and need to ship it back many times , is that still cheap?
I have had a hard time finding a guy to buy my 50f1.8 , it took me 5 months to sell it and I never wanna see it ever again.I relaly hate this lens , how many shots I missed because of the trashy AF.
being cheap does not make it a bargain lens , there is no free lunch .........
even though it is priced about 70 US , consider before buying it you'll relaly use it , especially when you have a good zoom with IS, I think you will never use it , 70US is still some kind of money , you can get some nice computer program , which is much more important than a cheap lens with lots of CA and useless focal length .
Now, most of zooms are just as sharp as this tiny plastic toy, and an expensive one like Ef70-200f4LIS or EF-S17-55IS are MUCH sharper than any primes in its range.
Plus, in practical use ,especially shooting on a crowded street , there is no time changing lenses over , primes are cool and fun some times , but no need them in real life.
I also notice that the bokeh of the lens is horrible , compared to any decent zoom , actually even the EF-S17-85IS or 24-105L is much sharper with much better bokeh.
Save your 70US and use it on a better lens or CS3 or DXO.

"We found them."
"Found them? In Mercia? The coconut's tropical!"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, this is a temperate zone"
"The swallow may fly south with the sun or the house martin or the plover may seek warmer climes in winter, yet these are not strangers to our land?"
"Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?"
"Not at all. They could be carried"
"What? A swallow carrying a coconut?"
"It could grip it by the husk!"
"It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut."

Are you kidding or on drugs or something? You are comparing the sharpness of a $70 lens to the $1000+ 17-55??? Come on, you are absurd dude... I'll say it again, $70 vs $1000, unless you're made of money, I'd say that is quite a difference! And, I find the 50 perfectly fine (FOR ITS PRICE) and very sharp.
Again, later you compare a 70-200F4 IS, which is what, like $1200-$1300, to the $70 50mm?? Seriously, you need help...for its price the 50mm is a fine, albeit cheap, tool for people that know how to use it.
Have a look at the MTF charts on Photozone if you think the sharpness of the "junk" 50mm can't compare to the 17-55IS. Since you probably won't be able to interpret them, I'll just tell you that the "junk" 50mm is actually SHARPER at most f stops than the 17-55, when extended to 55mm!!! So, I'd say for a $70 "toy" it does quite well against your esteemed 17-55 in terms of sharpness.

Totaly agree with the above statement. I have both the 17-55 and 50 and you cannot compare the both EXCEPT that if you add the kit lens 18-55 into this mix, I find the 50mm much sharper then the 18-55 kit. JMO.

Here is a image I shot with a flash (hi speed synch) and 100% crop. That is pretty darn sharp with NO sharpening done to it at all. This was shot raw. Shot at F2.0. And that is not even it's sweet spot. This thing at 2.8 to 4 something is as sharp or sharper then any lens besides the 85L

yeah im gonna have to agree with the replies to the guy who flamed the nifty... the lens might not be a state of the art example of precision engineering but it is a great little lens and some amazing shots can come out of it
it all comes down to knowing how to use it
here's a quote i read once: "ameteurs worry about gear... professionals worry about time... masters worry about light"
if youre getting poor results with a piece of gear, first assuming that it is not broken or malfunctioning... perhaps the fault lies elsewhere?

Just another in agreement that the nifty is a bargain at its price. Of course I'll upgrade to the 50/1.4 or the 50/1.2 someday. I'll also run around with nothing but 'L' quality lenses. You know, after my pictures start to fetch thousands of $$ each, I make $500 / hr to shoot, or my rich uncle gifts me a few million.
In all seriousness (and a bit OT), though, I've noticed that my 'keeper ratio' has varied based on my focus mode - 1-shot / AI Focus / AI Servo (1-shot gets the goods). Anyone else notice the same, and any chance the naysayers are trying to shoot sports with a non-USM, $70 piece of plasticy goodness?

@1.8 I find the 50 to be only a little soft, and basically anything higher, it becomes sharp to very L sharp. I find that I use this nifty for portraits more often than my 70-200f4L for portraits. The range is nice and the pictures are as sharp as or sharper than my bigger L.
inside my amature in-home studio, I use this lens because it produces the best pictures, simple as that. If lowlight is a problem, use flash assist, you shouldnt be shooting that low light without flash anyhow! The price tag may imply low quality, but if you know how to use this lens, you can achieve results similar or better than much more expensive glass.

All shot wide-open at f1.8 in Av and like all above, I cannot tell you how wonderful this little lens is. For the price, its just out-of-this world. People ask me if I am a Pro when they see the sharpness of this lens :)
I inadvertently dropped this lens last week and Canon is replacing it for free as it came apart LOL !
