you can find alot shots over there in this forum, but can you afford 1.4 version? I am thinking to buy it later even i got decend 1.8
maybe the price is different but all advice 1.4 over 1.8 version, but both are so sharp and superb. You can try 1.8 as it is cheaper than your clothes, hehe

Here's one from my 30D with the 50mm f1.8. For $80 out the door it's a pretty good lens. Beats the kit lens lens, hands down, but no where near as nice as my 300mm f2.8 IS.

This uses the 20mm Kenko tube and is slightly cropped. The photo below shows the efect of tubes with this lens. This lens is a little short to take close ups of insects that are nervous but this was taken in the middle of a tomato plant so it would be hard to be much farther back without something else getting in the way.

Indeed. I did buy one today, and I'm very pleased with it:D In terms od sharpness it's a step up for me as my other two lenses are the 18-55 and a first generation 75-300mm IS. It's nice to be able to take shots with an large aperture and have what is in focus sharp.

None of these pictures are any good PERIOD!
The bokeh is all wrong and the sharpness just doesn't cut it in fact they are all SOFT when compared to the more expensive lenses. All you cheapskates should hang your heads in collective shame at the disrepute you are bringing to photography in general. In fact you must all sell your gear and take up tiddlywinks.
What were you idiots thinking buying such a cheap lens when you could have forked out 4 times the amount for the 50 f1.4 just so that you get that milky smooth bokeh and pin sharp images? This thread has been such a disappointment!

Here's one I took last night. There aren't many lenses that will let you shoot hand-held with no flash at 9:30 pm. It's a bit noisy, because I had to crank it up to ISO 800 on my 300 D, but I'm sure there's no way I could have gotten a shot like this with my other lenses without bringing light.

Actually, that's exactly what I did.

After having this lens for 2-3 weeks, there is no way I would regret spending $80 on it. For such a low price, it offers way more than anyone would expect. Sure, you can spend a lot more and get a 1.4, but this one is cheap enough that you can buy one just to find out if you really want a faster one. It definately is enough to make a guy really crave the other fast primes.

I don't know if Nikolas was joking but it is an odd attitude from someone whose lens collection includes so many M42 and bargain options. Jarrad's gallery, linked above, shows exactly the type shot that would benefit from the f/1.4 upgrade. Most of his gallery are what would be termed 'bokeh' photos with next to nothing sharp but well crafted unsharp tones. I suspect a percentage of them were shot at f/1.4 but he uses a gallery that does not offer tech details. I regret so many people stretch the f/1.8 to lighting situations impossible for any lens and then complain that it is not sharp enough but my opinion remains that the reasons to avoid the f/1.8 have nothing to do with the glass. Bokeh fans (not me) will not be happy with the 5 bladed diaphragm and people like me will miss full time manual focus (FTM) provided by the f/1.4 but missing on the f/1.8. Correcting auto focus errors is much easier with FTM to the point that it is often better to put the f/1.8 in manual focus mode from the start.

The takumar 50 f1.4 is an amazing lens as is the flektogon 35 which is L quality when it comes to sharpness and resolution.

Have a look at some of my pictures in the m42 thread for examples.

Well, I'll definately give you that. FTM would be nice, and while I'm pretty satisfied with the bokeh, other people might not be. All in all though, it's a great lens, even though it's not quite as good as the 1.4. That being said, this lens is dirt cheap, and I would recommend it to pretty much anyone. The absolute worst case is that you use it, aren't quite satisfied with it, but end up with a better idea of exactly what you do want. I think most of the people that get it are pretty satisfied and don't feel the need to step up, but of course there will be people that aren't happy.

For anyone thinking about getting a nifty, do it. If money isn't a consideration, get the 1.4. If money IS an issue, get the 1.8. I would guess that 90% of people will be happy with the 1.8, but that other 10% just have different demands of their lenses, and chances are that they can afford to just jump into the more expensive one.

It was this shot (http://fuzzycoconut.dyndns.org/~shawn/pablos.jpg) that made me love my 50 1.8 again... I hadn't touched it in a long time and did this the night I got my 20D. Its large, yes, but shows off the lens nicely. I could have done with shielding the lights coming from the right, but other than that its not too bad.

Carefully remind her that you picked up the cheapest autofocussing lens you possibly could ... because you were thinking of her. Tell her you could have spent $350 on a slightly better lens but you went with the $75 one because you love her so much.

Try not to fidget when you say it =)

Gonna take this baby to a concert on Saturday, hopefully the typhoon not cancelling it.

This was taken in ridiculously dim lighting. The AF hunts around like a bee but when it locks, it's all good.... it's a little long on a crop body though. The 35L would be better XDXD

Well, I'm sure everyone here is disappointed that they bought an $80 lens instead of the $3800 lens. I'm just wondering WHY anyone would bring up how good they like there telephoto lens with IS in a thread about a cheap 50mm lens?

My 50mm is great, but not nearly as awesome as my printer... Or something like that.

I heard those are pretty nice. What was the "improvement" that Canon made with the MkII?

It's plastic. Very plastic. Makes it "lighter". Improvement more for production costs for Canon than for us hah.

15th of July 2006 (Sat), 00:07
I don't know of any "improvements" at all. I suspect KevC is right the margins were better and as anyone will tell you the optical difference is nill. So they could make a few more Yen per copy. But when you hold both lenses it is like night and day.

Nice pics. My lens should arrive early this week. I'm mainly only going to use this lens as a portrait lens for close proximity shots and the like but as everyone else says it's a good lens to have I figure can't hurt as it is the cheapest lens out there. If you look after your lenses well it realy shouldn't make any difference if the lens is plastic or metal from where I sit. I've had both and I treat them both the same and I haven't had a scratch on any of them.

Well, B&H looks pretty good for price, but if you want it NOW like I did, stop by your local camera store, and it's almost guaranteed they will have it in stock. You may end up paying about $10 more (I did) but you won't have to pay shipping costs, and most importantly you won't have to wait.

I just received my first digital SLR camera yesterday afternoon (Rebel XT).
I'm using a 50mm EF (non USM) 1.8 lens I bought for a Rebel film camera about 10 years ago.
I've already taken 100 photos.
I wouldn't have taken so many pictures with a film camera due to the cost of film and developing.

The picture of that young lady is absolutely gorgeous. Great photo and great lens. As someone just taking up the hobby of photography (was a snapshot taker before) it is wonderful to see so many wonderful photos.

I like the idea of posting a number of photos taken with a particular lens as it shows the possiblities with a given lens. Looking forward to seeing many more with different lenses. How about examples with the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS USM.
