I am discovering the need for a lens in this range, if not slightly lower. I don't see many Canon options except for the 17-40. Are there any other options from Sigma or Tamron that are highly recommended?

Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 if you need fast lens.
Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 for better range.
All of these lens are very good and priced between $380 to $440

Hey, exactly what I was gonna say.
Tokina is coming up with a 16-50mm f2.8 ATX Pro DX. Looking at their last two dslr lenses, it should be built like a tank, great price, and sharp.

Is price part of the equation? If not the 17-40L is nice. I would also look into the tammy 17-50 f2.8
