I am going to buy this soon and saw this under its description on B&H

Rear gelatin filter slot accepts up to three gel filters, allowing for a multitude of different combinations

Is this true? and if so what exactly are these?

Yes, as part of its rear flange to hold gelatin filters. I've never used the beasties, but I understand you can buy them and cut them to size to fit the lens. Gelatin filters seem to be old-school to me; does anyone use them today? If so, for what purposes?

One other thing - if you haven't found it, use the psmay code for B&H and you can get this lens for $625, plus you can still get the $50 Canon rebate.

I can't think why you would use it for digital ( if you use PS or similar).
But I'm open to suggestions.

Nothing superior about it....that is just what I use it for.

It is a very useful filter and one I wouldn't be without, although I use it less than others.

please elaborate on the psmay code, I will be picking this lens up before the rebate runs out and would like to save as much as I can, thank you.

Type this into the B&H search box: PSMAY06018

This should bring up the 17-40L with its sale price. Add it to your shopping basket and you should be good to go.

Ooooooh, gelatin NDs? That'll save me a whole lot of money buying the expensive glass NDs! Finally a use for that little slot!

Forgive me for my lack of knowledge but how can a Nuetral density filter be used in that slot ?

I thought the whole Idea of ND filters were to have the ability to rotate them to angles which suit the skyline in your shot.

Naah. That's a Graduated ND, which is half clear, half ND. Gel NDs are an even gray across the whole surface of the frame and need no rotation. The idea is to simply reduce all incoming light so you can use longer shutter speeds, say to capture waterfalls, or for star trails, or long exposures.

I see :)

Thanks for pointing that out to me :)

Tony, it looks like our lenses are twins.:) The date code on my 17-40 is also UU0307.
