Hi -

I'm deciding between replacing my Olympus Camedia 2040 with a G3 or taking the plunge to get the 300D - I have an Elan and several lenses so would love to go dSLR, but of course, the price.....

So - one of the biggest reasons I want to replace my Camedia is the shutter and autofocus lag. Trying to figure out if the G3 will be much of an improvement. Some of the digicam reviews describe it as pretty fast (especially if prefocused), while I've seen users here lamenting the long lags.

Can anyone tell me if I'm likely to see an improvement over my Camedia in either autofocus lag or shutter lag?

How about the G3 vs the G5 - pretty much the same performance?

Thanks,
Michael Jasper

go to dpreview.com. He has all the info about shutter and focuss lag on both of these cams. You can compare for yourself.

Yup, I've read all that - but I think numbers in objective tests aren't always indicative of real world experience with real, non-ideal subjects. I think one camera's algorithm might be faster with one kind of subject or light level, but slower with another. In the case of the Camedia, which on dpreview shows up with similar shutter lag as the G3 and was originally described as fast, my real world experience, esp. with kids, is that it is often incredibly slow - so I would love to hear if anyone has any basis for comparing the G3.

Thanks,
Michael
