Hey friends,

I took the leap and finally quit my job because my print sales are enough to pay the bills.:D I have some extra time and I want to fill it with some healthy magazine reading goodness.

Suggestions?

Avoid Popular Photography and Imaging, it's worthless.

I only read it occasionally, but a lot of photographers I have talked to think highly of Lens Work (http://www.lenswork.com/).

Hey, I get Popular Photography. Of course I only pay $10 a year. I spend more than that at McDonald's. It's nice sometimes to see what people write about stuff. They loved the new SONY DSLR. They also love the 30D and the D200. So, it's just equal opportunity advertizements.

I get EOS Magazine because it's put out in England and has some interesting prospectives about the Canon gear. The pictures are usually wonderful.

How do you just get POP for $10? I thought that it was $17.

After a year, that's what they charge.

I like "Photo Life" alot. It does not have many ads and has nice coverage on photographers and their porfolio's. It is out of Canada.

i read alot of them but the one that i like the best and read every new issue is Digital Camera from the UK. they do tons of PS techniques, tons of How-to's and my favorite is when they send one pro to a reader to help him with a problem. for example, they sent their portrait pro to help a reader learn how to compse right and how to use light in portraits. they also include a free cd with some great how to videos and some plugins.

I currently don't subscribe to any of them, but I frequently read American Photo and Shutterbug, and will occaisionally stop by Barnes and Noble and pick up a couple of obscure publications like Lens Work or something. Photo magazines are the devil.

It's tough to find good ones. My favorites are Lens Work and Photolife. I just discovered my local B&N actually has a very good selection, so I'll be watching the news stand.

I like POP but only because it has lots to look at. But yeah it sort of worthless because the last 50 pages are all giant ads for B&H and others. Although I have like the second issue of Popular Photography and it was basically the same back then as it is now, amazing pictures, info you can find on the net and tons of ads. Only thing that has changed since then is "Enlarger? Huh what's that!" ;)

I also like"PhotoLife" a magazine from Canada. It is more into photography then ads. Worst one I hate is Shutterbug. Bought one copy and have not bought any since.

Oh, and I'll add Digital Photo Pro to the list of frequently read mags as well.

I subscribe to Popular Photography, Shutterbug, and Outdoor Photographer. I agree that sometimes you get an issue that is just telling me stuff I already know... but I usually find lots of useful things in there. My current favourite is Outdoor Photographer. I've gone subscription mad over here, because it's so darn cheap! Back home, I'd pay WAY more for them and I'm not aware of any Aussie mags that are published, so if I was to pay for the US ones, they'd cost me a fortune. The companies here told me a clever way to get around that at least for a couple of years: right before I go home, I'm going to do a 5 year subscription. Some of the companies will actually pay for the shipping back to Aus! (Good tip for anyone else in this boat!)

As my wife is a dentist, she gets a lot of the magazines free (good advertising for the magazines to have them in a waiting room) so I get my pick of the cream free :D

Outdoor Photographer and Digital Photo Pro are the two I subscribe to, but I will pick up Shutterbug if it looks like some good articles...one I should just subscribe to, because I pick up a copy whenever I see one is Photo Life...:D

the nice thing is, Barnes and Noble will let you sit right there and read all the magazines you care to. So, no need to spend money on subscriptions. You can kick back in a comfortable chair and have a $7.00 cup of coffee at the same time!

That darn store is addicting! I spend way too much money in there!

I would love to order EOS Magazine, but the cost is ridiculous over here in the States... :-(

Is this the same Practical Photography that they sell in Britain?

I remember stopping buying it when the cover price went over the value of the content. These days I don't even look at a magazine if it's hidden away inside a plastic cover.

I get Practical Photography (http://www.photographymags.co.uk/) and Photography Monthly (http://www.photographymonthly.com/), both of which are magazines from the UK and cost roughly $12 a month. I don't have a subscription. PP is for tips and tricks and PM is for the "high brow" articles.

They're great magazines and I highly recommend them.

I read PP for a while but as the articles became rather drab and inaccurate, I surmised that the journalists writing knew a little about photography but not enough to write anything very authoratative.

Yeah, I only use PP for tips and tricks and I like PM for more insight. These forums are also really good. :)

I don't have any subscriptions because I'm pretty sure that I'll only need about 6-8 of each magazine to cover all of the subjects. You can only do "The Ultimate Landscape Guide" once. ;)

I find that forums such as POTN are a better source of getting the real deal, no holds barred actual user feedback from the field, and experience with gear and accessories people use everyday in the real world. You just can't get that from any publication. Period. Remember that the company that manufactures the particular piece of equipment getting reviewed/highlighted/featured are also paying good money for advertisement, and not to have their products trashed in a magazine review. So don't be surprised when you read reviews that make ridiculously absurd claims like "The new Nikon D200 handles noise better than anything on the market!" (Not an actual quote, btw) Magazines are good for checking up on what's being introduced into the market, reading interviews with pro shooters to see what makes them tick and spotlighting some of their work, or reading up on tutorials. For comprehensive field reports, I turn to wonderful world of internet forums. But sometimes forums have a way of "demonizing" certain products if you're not careful. ;)

I subscribe to Practical Photography :) I´ve been buying different magazines all the time until I started my subscription with PP. The other magazines are filled with to much commercials in my opinion.

I agree. The one thing I can't is magazines filled with ads! I just paid $12 for this, why am I being bombarded with ads?

Although it's true and I agree with what you've written above but I still like the feel of holding a magazine and reading an article in a magazine over an article on the net. Just personal perference =)

The only advantage magazines have over the internet is the fact that it's inconvenient to take a laptop to the toilet. ;)

Lenswork is my favorite magazine by far. Always great, no ads, no gear reviews, it's just about the photographs. Focus magazine is pretty good too.
