Ok, I like my Sigma but I'm officially convinced to buy a 24-105. I don't know if I'll keep the Sigma but I have to get the L. I used my fathers this weekend and I'm officially in love with a new piece of glass! Great shots everyone.:D

I had both up until the point when I sold the 17-70, the 24-105L is a superb lens, however sharpness, contrast & colour are not as larger difference as people believe over the 17-70, the Sigma holds its own very well indeed!
I absolutely LOVE my 24-105L on my 5D, but I dont care much for it when its mounted on my cropped body, its just not very wide.
I just heard that Sigma are bringing out the 17-70 HSM, not sure if it will be this side of Christmas though as they took ages to release the 18-200OS, although I personally never had any gripes with the AF speed on my 17-70, it was able to track moving objects easily, HSM is probably more of a refinement, what they really should have put on it was the OS!

Yep I read the article again, Nikon at the moment, but if they can do it for Nikon mount then HSM on the Canon mount is only a matter of time as its kinda unfair to Canon users ;-)

I'm not upset by the lack of HSM on mine, but that's not to say I wouldn't like it. I just don't know if it would matter that much, since I find the focus fast anyways. Now if they added OS to the lens then I would be a bit upset. I've become a big fan of IS, or whatever you call it, since getting my Canon 70-300IS.

Yes I agree, I found the focus plenty fast enough, or put it another way I never had any shots ruined because the focus wasnt quick enough for me.
OS would be very good on the 17-70, some say that OS or IS isnt required on wideangle lenses, but I havent found that to be so, even on a sunny day if you start using a CPL & stop down its not long until you require IS or a tripod.
The one thing I was suprised about the 17-70 was how very little difference there was in terms of optics, sharpness, colour, contrast etc, to an L lens, considering how many times the L fanatics claimed that a Sigma 17-70 is not capable of L like images, when I compared the 17-70 against the 24-105L I found no major differences, certainly not as much as what was being claimed.
The one major gripe with the 17-70 is the fact it isnt FF compatible, that is a REAL shame as it would have been so great on the 5D, 17mm would have been ultra wide with some good reach of 70mm, damn shame that.

It is not so much the lack of focus speed as it is the ability to use FTM. The lens is not that big and hands can grab the wrong ring.

Thats true, it would have been better if the ring didnt turn, but after using for a few hours I found it no longer caused any problems, its just something you adapt to, I have FTM on my L lens but its more of a luxury than an essential.
I always think optics should go above anything else, of course all these extra gizmos like FTM, IS etc are nice though :p

Yah, I'd have to agree there, FTM would be a nice bonus. I have grab the wrong ring before but since this lens is almost always attached I got used to that pretty quick and don't find myself doing that anymore. I'd like to see the price of the HSM version compared to the original one. It makes me wonder why they don't just put HSM on all lenses, can it really add that much to the cost of the lens?

Dear Ahh, I've yet to identify the plant in image # 5.
Eryk, No, I've not used any extention tube but this is the quality and build of the lens, which allows you to focus on the subject very close (approx. 1-2 inches)

Sorry for my noobness, whats a wide open lens mean ?
Shooting wide open simply means a lens used at its widest aperture, in the case of the 17-70 shooting wide open would be f/2.8 at 17mm & f/4.5 at 70mm
In the case of a 50mm f/1.8, wide open would be f/1.8, stopped down is any aperture smaller than that, like f/2.8 - f/8.0 etc.

LOL - yes, the big one is a whale shark. They are the largest fish in the sea. Harmless plankton eaters. Can get to 18m but this one is only about 7m ish.
The little one is a porcelain crab. This is a crop - the shot was taken with that intention as even with the "macro" capabilities of this lens, these guys are too small to fill the frame. The "eyelashes" are his rakers - he sticks them out - like baseball mitts - to catch food. I call this shot "Geisha Crab".
I do use a dedicated underwater housing - Subal.
I was just trying to show the great range of possibilities with this lens. I would not be without it! The ability to focus extremely close is essential for my underwater shooting (distance is the enemy underwater) and now that I've discovered how good it is for people and even in very dim light I'm doubly hooked!
Go buy one :)

Hi, this is one of the first shots I made with my brand new Sigma 17-70. Not the best of the conditions - it was raining. :( But i like the shot anyway.:)
Comments are welcome.

I sent my Sigma 17-70mm back to Sigma today for recalibration. I have not been totally happy since I got it in April. The lens has a back-focus tendency. Here are 3 photos, the first a focus test at 17mm, the second at 70mm nd the third is a shot from my Canon 50mm 1.8. The lens will get to Sigma on This coming Thursday. I will post results when I get it back in a week or two.

Well, even though I'm broke, and this lens was not on my wish list, I knew I was never going to be satisfied with my kit lens, so I took the plunge and bought a second-hand 17-70. It's in good physical condition, but I suspect it has a back focus issue too. Interestingly, the person at the Sigma agency to whom I spoke said that he had never before heard of this issue with this lens. Hmmmm, I thought, how come I have? Worse, he couldn't give an estimate for calibration without the lens first going to Australia, as that is where NZ lenses are serviced, and there is about a 3 week turn-around. It could end up costing me more than a new lens with a warranty.
This lens is REALLY sharp, the trouble is, sometimes it's not sharp where I want it to be.
Anyway, without further ado, I present a test shot, together with some 100% crops. RAW converted to jpg with no alterations/filters, etc other than downsizing. I think the EXIF data are intact, but I'm not yet an expert on how to control this. The jpg compression is quite high on these unfortunately, in order to meet the 100kB limit. I also haven't found a suitable online home for larger images yet, sorry.
Thanks for all the posts that helped me make the commitment to this excellent lens.

As for the footprint, weekend just gone i went walking up to Edale and camped rough. This was taken from today when i got lost on the top of Kinder Scout, was very foggy (i have loads of pics, i am yet to go through them, but shall ost them up hopefully tomorrow) it basically looks like the moon, i love it up there lol.

I know what you mean about churches, I find them facinating to photograph, I dont really have any right to post here as I sold my 17-70 & this recent shot was taken on a 24-105L, but its just one rogue shot among a flood of 17-70's ;-)

Thanks, if you do any shots like that then be sure to take a tripod, that image was 1/6th at ISO1000 handheld, but only possible due to IS, this church was great, no vicar to ask permission! :p
Do you shoot in raw or jpeg?
willy b
9th of September 2007 (Sun), 18:45

The churchs i have tried have all been locked lol, so no way to get in:( But my grandparents are quite envolved (and more improtantly have a key) to the one in the above post, so might take a trip up there again soon:)

Ah right, your lucky they arnt raw then, try processing that many, believe me it takes TIME!! ;)
Yes that was ISO1000, if I had chosen ISO100 I would have run into an exposure of a few seconds, 1/6th is about as slow as I can handhold.
Oh well this church was open to the public, I actually got lucky as there wasnt a sole in there, I managed to get this shot & some others just before the next wave of tourists came in :p
Its worth doing some indoor shots, the architecture in the older churches is amazing.

as for getting paid, i normally tell them im not a professional just a amateur hobbyist... i shoot for the enjoyment of shooting, but most of the time the owners are pretty happy with what they get, which slowly helps cover the burning hole in my pocket from buying all the equipment -.-
