Aye, a polarizing lens or GND filter may help with that sky a bit. Non the less, I love the first picture Fuzz........The second one just doesn't seem to have that certain, punch.

Here are a few of my shots from the 17-70. I feel like I can't get consistently sharp shots with the lens and am wondering if it's a function of the lens, my camera, and me. I'll have to keep shooting til I start shooting brilliant shots like the ones you guys have posted!

I was refering to the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX DG Macro. IQ wise is it any good? Just bought one but havent had a chance to test it but I am very impressed with all the 17-70 pics posted here.

Sorry, thought you meant the Canon.
Some say the 24-70 is better than the 17-70 mainly because it focusses faster & has a constant f/2.8 aperture, but on the downside the macro isnt quite as close as what can be acheived with the 17-70 (1:3.8 vs 1:2.3).
Also some feel that 24mm on a 1.6x body (38mm) is not wide enough, but it all depends on what you will be using the lens for.

I'm about to send mine off too I think - same issue as yours: back-focussing at close range. It's complicated a bit since Canon says my 30D is also back-focussing, so it's in for service!
Have you run any formal tests since it was returned? Is it fixed?
Thanks.

Hi, I did run focus tests on the new lens and it seems to be all fine.
I actually got a replacement lens from the shop rather than a repaired one. I asked them to show me a few and tested them in the shop until I was satisfied that there was no major issue with the lens that I could determine at the time. I did say that I would bring it back if I were to discover issues later.
Fortunately the shop owner is a friend and tolerates all my nonsense .
Luckily only had to go through one lens and it was ok.

OK. Thanks for that. Unfortunately, I got mine second-hand without a warranty (although it was said to be fine). I'll see how it looks after my 30D is recalibrated before I send it off. I was just hoping to pick up a clue as to how well the calibration process worked. Still, it should perform as well as a new one when it is calibrated, I hope.
Happy snapping!

that place was truely amazing, i hope the hole in the fence never gets patched, i really wanna go back with i have a sigma 10-20. i didnt get too many shots with the 17-70 in there because i was using my friends 70-200 2.8 IS which was soo fun!

Snake and the T-rex photos kick a**!
Thank you.
The snake was shot through glass at The Shedd aquarium in Chicago.
The T-rex is the largest most complete skeleton discovered to date and also in Chicago.
Both of those have very minimal PP work and were not cropped.

I've never been able to pinpoint it until today, but just looking through more samples you can see that images from this lens tend to be on the warm so. Perhaps enough so to bug me just a little
I know that all Sigma's tend to be a bit warmer, and I've noticed it too in my 55-200, but I don't think it's as strong on that lens as it's never really bugged me.

Hopefully this will give you an idea what kind of range to expect...
I was contemplating this lens for awhile now and that comparison just sealed the dealfor me, thanks !

The 17-70 is one sweet lens, I've been using for over a year now and I'm still loving it. Rarely comes of my body. Me and my wife are looking at getting a second body and I may find myself getting another copy of this lens when we do! Mind you I wouldn't mind Canon's 24-105 as well....

I do find some shots are a bit on the warm side, but I always shoot in raw so I can correct for that when it happens.
As far as sharpness goes, I find it really sharp at f/8 ish.. and sharp over all. Now I've taken some soft shoots with it, but that's user error that I can't blame the lens for. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot more people getting into DSLR's for the first time (like myself) pick up this lens since the price is very good for what you're getting and the inexperience may be the fault of see more soft shots than the lens itself...

Going off topic now so i apologise in advance.
Whilst the photograph is good, the subject matter made me cringe! Whats the point in wearing a helmet if the rest of your body is left soooooo exposed. if they were to come off at speed, there would be nothing left of them, except of course beautifully preserved heads. in my book theres no excuse for not wearing the correct safety gear. hope they made it home in one peice...

Well mine tbh was easy! In the village i live in, over the summer there was some awful flooding (i posted some pics up, so you may or may not remember) And i phoned the local newpaper telling them who i was, and what i have pictures over, they asked me to email the pictures (which i did) Then they rang me back and said they will use them on teh front cover, and the other ones i took in the centre.
Because i lived in the middle, no paper photographer could, or woudl dare to get in so close, so i got the best shots!
The boggers didn't pay me though!!! :(:(
