Here you are a shot taken today in the surroundings of Madrid.
I was testing my brand new polarizer filter ;)

From what I have seen and read, the Sigma 17-70 seems like a great all around lens. It seems so great that I just ordered one:D. What lenses are you guys/gals teaming this lens up wth? I will be getting a Canon 70-200 f/4 next week and I already have a Nifty Fifty. I was using a Canon 28-135 IS and a Canon 70-300 IS. I liked that combo but was never 100% satisfied with the lenses so I sold them to start all over.
I looked at the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 but decided on the Sigma 17-70 for the added focal range in the low end. Does anyone find that they miss the f/2.8 aperature throughout the entire focal range? Would it be crazy to add something like a 17 or 18-50 f/2.8 to the bag? Is that too much overlap?
I'm just a hobbiest photographer and enjoy shooting sports, candids, macro, or just whatever I see. My camera bag is always with me.
I team up this lens with a very old lens, that is surely not going to satisfy you if you are buying an L lens.
It's the Canon 70-210 F4 (it's now more than 20 years old!). It cannot obviously rival any L lens, but I think it could be better than most modern budget lenses (consider it was designed for film, so vignetting and MTF at borders is quite good).
If you need to spend just few bucks, give it a try, even if another good option could be the 70-210 F3.5-4.5, which is a bit newer.
Along with that I'm going to buy for sure the Sigma 10-20, even if the dream would be the Canon 10-22 (but that is far too expensive for me).

I have the EF 70-300IS which you just sold. I love it.
I'll probably get a true macro next...ef-s 60 or ef 100.... and sometime I'll probably get something wider than the 17 of the Sigma.

Thanks for the tip, Fargo! I actually sent the 70-200 F/4L back. I ordered a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 II this morning. I'll have it Monday:D. If this one doesn't work out for me (I'm pretty sure it will) I'll give anything a try. I would have kept the F/4L except I shoot a lot of evening/night bicycle races. I really need the faster glass. The 70-300IS was okay last season but not fast enough.

My 17-70 has become my absolute favorite lens! It's just wide and long enough to use for as a wonderful carry around/walk around lens.
Fargo -- Nice pics! Are you using a filter on your lens? If so, which one? I have a Tiffen on mine right now because that's what I had on hand. I have a Hoya on the way.

Fargo -- Nice pics! Are you using a filter on your lens? If so, which one? I have a Tiffen on mine right now because that's what I had on hand. I have a Hoya on the way.
I always use a Hoya HMC UV (most of all to protect the lens from dirt and scratches) and I also used an Hoya HMC CPL in some of the above photos.
With Circular Polarizer the skies are so bright and blue!
By the way, does anybody have the same filter I got? It is Pro1 Digital HMC by Hoya. It is a very good filter, but it has got one problem: being it very thin, the part that screws in to the lens is also very thin (it must be 1-2 mm), and when I try to remove it from the lens it is very difficult because I cannot have grip on the ring, while I get grip on the rotating ring. Every time it takes me 5-10 minutes of tries to take it out!
Do you know if there's any trick to make it easier?

thank you yes its a nice shot, i tried upping brightness and saturation etc, but it right away becomes very grainy.
this is the ladies only team Hong Kong sends to the competition in Sintgapore, at the gala dinner they did their first trials disp[lay table, which was good. so i hope from singapore when we go home with gold!! i will able to takle some nice food shots.

They now have a Nikon mount with HSM, it would be nice to have that on the Canon mount. Not that it would be enough to rebuy it, but if they added OS to it... well..... I would really have to think about that!

I love the macro capabilities of this lens......especially that you can esentially focus on something that is literaly touching the front element!!

k forget the dust, forget the chewing gum, forget the bad hand writing. and all the other bad. i am just sharing my slow learning curve here.
this pic has improved due to taking different angle, plus lacing around the egg with printer paper to give reflection, using a 22 inch silver reflector and a longer lens to have more distance, hence letting the light come more from above instead of the wall behind it.
flash was on camera, bounced of the ceiling. silver reflector was just below the camera.
suggestions encouraged to go further.
p.s. for all those who may wonder, i am trying to shoot a collage of whole egg, boiled egg, smashed egg, raw egg out of the shell, and scrambled egg as a easter card

After looking through 20+ pages, I think you guys have convinced me to buy this lens....now I just hope I get a sharp copy! Honestly though, I am going to NYC and Montreal this summer and I am excited to take some landscapes/architecture type things.

Kurt.m, if you can, go to a local camera store and try some copies. I did the same and noticed quite some difference, both in sharpness and focussing (back and front focussing).
kurt.m
19th of March 2008 (Wed), 16:36
should I avoid buying online because I have no control of the quality of copy that I get?
AirbusA380
19th of March 2008 (Wed), 16:52
Think of it this way: if you don't get a decent copy (either with focus or sharpness problems) you would have to send the lens to Sigma, which would mean a) adds a few bucks on top of the online price and b) wait for the lens to return and thus a couple of days/week(s) without your new lens.
I don't know the price difference between a brick and mortar store and buying online, though.

I believe 'DC' stands for Digital Camera.
From Sigma's website:
"These are special lenses designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital SLR cameras. Their specialized design gives these lenses the ideal properties for digital cameras, the compact and lightweight construction is an added bonus ! including compact and lightweight construction."
If you get a good copy, you'll definitely enjoy this lense as evident by this thread.

To put it in simple terms......The Sigma term "DC" is equal to Canon's EF-S lenses, meaning that it can only be used on a DSLR with a crop sensor (not full frame). The Sigma lenses that are labelled as "DG" on the other hand are equal to Canon's EF lenses, thus meaning they can be used on a DSLR that is either crop sensor or full frame.
Hope this helped Kurt.M, and welcome to POTN to both you and Photo_Rebel. :)

Actually, this isn't entirely true :p as EF-S lenses would hit a FF camera's mirror, while DC lenses do not. Both aren't usable on FF, though.

True enough Daniel.......but the same other than that little tid bit.....hehehe.......Didn't know that little tid bit either, about the difference between the Sigma (DC) and the Canon (EF-S) on the back of the lens. :)

Excellent shot!
May I ask what settings you used for this?
I bought the lens and have a 400D. Being new to photography, the learning curve is VERY STEEP and most of my shots come out either too dark, or soft.
Sometimes, it gets very frustrating, especially when I see the results on here!
Perhaps if more people were to be so kind as to display the EXIF data with shots, beginners like mself may get a better idea as to HOW to shoot interms of settings....
Thanks,

ok guys look, I went to the ymca this weekend and tried this lens at sports. I know this lens is not for sports and it showed. Had trouble keeping focus in servo on moving kids. I used this because I sold my 70-200 2.8 and wanted to do some sports.
It did well in bright light. lost focus sometimes but most of the time it did keep pace with the target. I miss my 70-200 but I managed to get some keepers with this little lens. I love it to death but, for sports its just a so so lens.
here are some of the pics I got, basketball was hard to do. Light was pretty bad so I had to bump the iso to 3200.
