Very nice images Marco!
I think it is a superb work!
For the color, it might only be a white balance problem. You could try to adjust it with photoshop levels tool, or even better if it is a raw image.

Anyway if you want to get the best result in still life pictures, try buyng a grey color card.
It is quite inexpensive (I guess it should be around 15 euros) and will allow you to get perfect results. You just have to take a picture of the card with the same light and position of your subject, and then use that picture to set manual white balance.
The card is set to 18% reflective value, which is the same value to which all camera metering systems are calibrated. In this way you will get perfect colors.

But I think your pictures are very nice even now

By the way, do you happen to have Italian origins?

Bias answer, in a bias thread -Yes, the 17-70 is better! :D

In all seriousness, however, it really depends on what is more important to you (e.g. partial 2.8 or extended zoom) and what you shoot.

Gorgeous photos!

I tried a search and couldn't find it, does someone here know the breakdown of f-stop at different focal lengths for this lens?

I.e., what is maximum aperture at 17mm, 24mm, 30mm, etc.? I'm sure I'm missing it somewhere. The images are so amazing, I'm just trying to decide if I need that extra light and speed for indoors getting a constant 2.8. Currently using my kit, I find I'm usually at the wide end (18-30)

you're definately better getting a sigma 24-70 2.8 or equivalent for low light shooting, unless you need the 17mm, in that case i'd get the tamron 17-50 2.8, gives you about the focal range of the kit lens, i find it next to impossible shooting indoors at f4.5 without using excessive ISO levels... on the 400D iso is a bit of an issue.. you can live with it.. but you definately would be better going the tamron 17-50 2.8 if your using the wide end more, V good optics too.. do some research..
just my 2 cents

your welcome mate,
i just regret getting the sigma only because of the changing aperture,
i shoot a fair amount of low light situations so it makes a difference,
if i did it again i'd get the tamron, regardless of that the sigma is an awesome lens, i've got a fair amount of awesome shots with it, very good as a walk around.. but would be so much better just if it had the constant 2.8 aperture,
have fun deciding :)

That 1.25 is in British Pounds.

1.25 GBP equals $2.47USD for ONE liter! It takes 3.78 liters to equal ONE US Gallon. That means they are paying $9.33 USD for one US gallon!

$3.78USD per gallon is still cheaper than many other places in the world.

Canada is currently about $1.20CAD per liter. ($4.26 USD per US Gal.)

Thanks Mike! I just filled up this morning with diesel...@ £1.18 a litre, cost me £63 :(

Photo_Rebel
5th of May 2008 (Mon), 10:17
That 1.25 is in British Pounds.

1.25 GBP equals $2.47USD for ONE liter! It takes 3.78 liters to equal ONE US Gallon. That means they are paying $9.33 USD for one US gallon!

$3.78USD per gallon is still cheaper than many other places in the world.

Canada is currently about $1.20CAD per liter. ($4.26 USD per US Gal.)

DOH!!!:oops::rolleyes: Completely forgot about metric freakin' conversions!

In that case, sorry willy, I guess we have it made over here. I shouldn't be complaining about gas -at least for now.....

Just bought this lens today as another support to my hobby, and is now alongside the 18-200 OS, which I thought was also a great lens. Just managed to try a few different things when I got home, and the dog was a natural subject! I am really pleased with this lens so far, and cant wait to get out and try it out a bit better.

Was rather disappointed last Saturday.

Came home from a company day out, had been sailing. I'd been doing the shooting on board, with the Sigma 17-70 (though looking back, I think a 10-22 or something would've served me better).
The results were rather... disappointing tbh. Normally this lens is the greatest, but that day... nope. Unsharpness everywhere. On many pictures, the unsharpness could be further identified as backfocus. D'oh!
Now, since it's normally quite ok, I'm going to blame this on the dual filters (UV + Pol) I had attached. So here's the hint for today: Don't use multiple filters
That, or maybe I screwed up with focusing centered and then making the composition. In any case, next time I'm using the polfilter, the UV goes off. Hmmm... looking back, I think that pol has been causing me some trouble before, but I can never quite put the blame on just that.

Mind you, the pictures usable after a small resize (or even without). It's not like the pictures are oh-so horrible. Let's just say it's down to compact camera quality. Sorta...
PSP is going to do some fixing ;)

PS: those pics are not for public view, sorry :)

Have you used this PL filter before? Any chance it was not a Cir PL?

B&W circular polarisation filter.
Used it plenty, and tbh, it hasn't always been bad either. The previous bad encounter I mentioned was actually more likely to be related to the weather conditions at the time (hazy). May have been slightly dirty, although I checked the night before. The evening after, it definately was dirty though (needs another good cleaning).
So yeah, I guess I'm back at just not using dual filters anymore. Or stopping screwing up myself (though unlikely, looking at the ratio of backfocused/unsharp images).

Eagle
26th of May 2008 (Mon), 14:48

You should never do this. Only one filter at a time. If you use a UV all the time, take it off before putting any other filter on.

Eagle

I doubt it caused your focus problem though. Probably just operator error. Could very well have been the focus and recompose.

Just been processing the first 60 pictures (the first 60 good ones, out of 127; I already selected last Saturday).
Made me think... what was I whining about ?
Guess I was a bit too picky at the time. Yes, I've seen sharper. But overall, it's not that bad at all. A resize to 2048xsomething cleared up almost everything. Add some sharpening and voila. Some have backfocused, some are just unsharp. Some are reasonably sharp in fact.

Operator error it is. Focus&Recompose is a likely culprit indeed.
But I'm still going to take off the UV when putting on the CP in the future.

I just want too much... I want perfection. Call me a pixel peeper :P. Good mentality if I want to improve I guess ;)

Overall, I got me some great pics of that day after all...

Ive done plenty of tests with several filters, the most I ever tried was 2 UV's + CPL, even then under controlled conditions there was no major sharpness losses.

Flare is the biggest problem, you will often find that you dont suffer any increase in flare by using just a good quality UV filter, but a CPL is another story, ive found they can easily lose contrast & suffer flare problems.

With a UV + CPL the flare can be such that it starts to effect AF, causing backfocus & other such issues.

My advise is to use the UV, then if you must use a CPL take the UV off, I know its a bind as you risk dropping the UV in the process, but you will get better results.

I never use CPL's these days except for the very rare occasions, like when I want to remove reflections from water, but thats IT! I just dont find the quality of them acceptable.

I seem to have a problem with this lens. Whenever I use it on its wide end up to about 35mm I get really bad back focus. I'd focus on say a group of people maybe 5-6 ft away using center focus and end up getting the back wall in focus. I find myself having to zoom to 70mm, achieve focus, then zoom out to take the picture.

I never used to have this problem before. I don't have any filters on it just the hood. I did a test using the focusing chart which yielded no focus problems. I did this throughout the zoom range. I seem to only have this problem when using it in real life situations.

Any thoughts? I really need a lens in this zoom range for an upcoming event. Thanks!
