Greetings! I am almost sold on this lens! Can someone post some non-processed, non-flash night shots or night candids? I'm hoping the lens can handle fun shots of friends at night or indoors without a crazy amount of blur.

Just got my 40D and my Siggy 17-70:)

I find that I got a 'Made in Japan' lens and they seem to have changed the lens cap to one with the release BOTH on the sides AND the centre!:) - So no need to buy another lenscap.

Was confused between this and the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. Am a newbie to dSLR - took a lot of shots but I don't know enough to conclude one way or the other!

My first ever snaps with a dSLR - I acknowledge I am at the bottom of the learning curve!:o

First a close up of the bottom of a lamp holder.

My first ever flower shot! It was a wooly kind of flower and I focussed on the yellow part of one of them.

its cooked, but just so long that its hot but the yolk still runny.

i do some of this kinda stuff to yes, but this was from a molecular cooking seminar today, more can be seen here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcoveringa/

the following was made by me just 2 nights ago:

Can I ask, for this kind of photography do you find this lens to be ideal?

I run a B&B and do our photography, and some food photography is on the cards.

I'm tossing up between this and the Tamron 17-50 2.8 (hey, who isnt :D )

But specificically I'm wondering about the Tamrons constant 2.8 advantage vs the 17-70's reach and closer macro focus.

any thought on the two for food photography usage?

Cheers.

hi i use my sigma 17-70 for it as its the best i have got, hoqwever i think of it to get a 50 mm f1.4 for food soon, i think that will do me much better! 2.8 is still not fast enough unless you have very good lighting or flash, then again we all know on cam flash is not at all ideal for this.

so my suggestion for food: get a canon 50 mmf1.4

Well.. I have the Canon 50mm and a 420ex flash to go on the 40D. And a 10-20. But I'm after something in between.

I might go the tamrom 17-50, not sure the extra 20mm that the 17-70 has will be much use to me. decisions decisions... :D

Something to get some close ups for interior shooting as well would be nice. I'm missing the 30-35m range at the moment.

Ryan you need to leave a space or two between photo's that are dark.......And on that note, some of these I think are a little bit too dark. The one I do like though is the one looking through the door way at the window (number 3 I think).

They were spaced right after i submitted cause i saw that too. Refresh browser.
Pics were taken from 9-930pm they depict quite well how dark it was in the house. The sun set at 9:22pm.

^^ its a good lens..
but a good photographer can make any lens look good, its fun buying new gear and getting new glass and all, but the glass wont make you a better photographer.. will only assist your "talent" levels.. whatever they may be,
beware it is 2.8-4.5, if you need a constant aperture lens have a look at the sigma 24-70 2.8 or the tamron 17-50 2.8, both awesome lens's and will work great on a 40D

Thanks buddy, it sure is a great lens.. really versatile as a walkaround, for me the changing aperture just kills it as so much of my work is done with very small amounts of light, but this lens is awesome for anything outdoors and especially great for a landscape/walkaround lens :)

awesome optics for the price, incredibly sharp and pretty good build quality
would be nice if the HSM version was a 2.8 the whole way through, or canon decided to make a 17-70 2.8L

now im just dreaming :P

awesome b/w shots of the dog btw, great conversion :)
do you ever shoot B/W in camera?
its about the only time i shoot jpeg, and i LOVE the monochrome tones!

Finally got to go out and use the 17-70 this weekend for some macro shots. talk about minimum focusing distance. I was shooting close up flower shots and noticed the subject moving. I then realized I was actually touching the object and the lens was focusing on it.

I just got the 450D with 18-55mm IS lens. Its good lens but I was looking for something with a bit more range to use as a walkabout lens and to use at my wedding/honeymoon in oct (I only want to take one lens). I've looked a lot of different lenses but I just keep coming back to this one. I wanted something with a little longer zoom (the canon 24-105mm is way out of my price range but something like the sigma 18-125mm OS) but the more I read about this and see the quality of 17-70mm the more I'm sold on it.

Am I completely mad, considering the extra range isn't that much?

No, you're not mad, it's an amazing lens for the money. I love mine.

However, I've also got the Sigma 18-200mm OS which is proving a match for the 17-70, so it might be worth checking it out too. On camera it's not that much bigger, it has OS (the 17-70 doesn't) and you've got a much bigger range.

Thanks Chalkie. Your comments about the Sigma 18-200mm OS have made me wonder again, as the extra range would be nice. I would have to go for 18-125mm version though as my budget wont stretch to 18-200mm version at the moment.

But then I see more great shots on here like the above and brings me right back to the 17-70mm! Maybe I'll get it for now and pick up something with a longer range early next year. decisions..decisions...

yeah...macro is next on the list...i was actually originally looking for a wide angle...widest i've got is 28mm...but the macro function on this is appealing to me...i'm still thinking of the tokina 12-24 possibly

I've tried it, and couldn't focus on anything at all.
Even the shortest tube moves the maximum focus distance inside the lens.

willy b
18th of July 2008 (Fri), 04:07
I have done it with 21mm and 13mm of tubes on (thinks thats the ones, well it is the small one and the medium sized one)
The results were very nice i though!

Oh, great. Here's me, all set on the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, and then someone says, "Oh, but have you had a look at Sigma's 17-70?" I thought I had this one sewn up. Swings and roundabouts: is the extra width worth losing the stop-and-a-bit at the long end? I'm seriously needing a kit lense replacement.

msowsun
30th of July 2008 (Wed), 17:00
Once you start using a good sharp lens like the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 or Sigma 17-70, you will never want to use your 18-55 kit lens again.

So then you have to ask yourself, Will I miss the wide end? For most people the answer is yes.

You should also consider the Tamron 17-50 2.8 or Sigma 18-50 2.8

Beautiful shot, where was this taken at? I love this lens...

The first 2 photos are Moraine Lake in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada.

The last shot is the Bow River. The location is known as "Morant's Curve". It is named for a famous railroad photographer who took many photos of trains at this location. It is a couple of miles east of Lake Louise along the Bow Valley Parkway. This is the original road through the area before the Trans Canada Highway was built.

The best shots are in the early morning, as soon as the sun gets over the ridgeline.

Here is a link to Google Maps:

Not sure how many pics we can throw onto one page... sorry if this is too much!

All taken with a canon 40d except for the last one which was taken with a 400d.

Would this lens work on the Elan 7N? Or is there a chance the mirror would smash on it? If not, where would the vignetting start?

The mirror won't hit the lens but there will be lots of vignetting. Not sure where it would start.

Here is a sample of what it would look like at the wide end.

Well I finally took the dive and decided to purchase a proper camera! Whilst the G7 has served me well, and will continue to do so, I've finally purchased a SLR, ignoring all the hype about the 50D I got a good deal on a 40D and also plumped for a Sigma 17-70mm instead of the kit lens. Loving it so far, played endlessly over the last couple of days exploring the many functions of the camera and lens. Here's one pic from today.

Well, I've finally done it. Having spent the last year complaining about my kit lense (yeah, it's okay, but it is soft, admittedly, and it's not the fastest, and sometimes 55mm is just not long enough, etc) I've finally pulled the trigger on one of these. Hopefully picking it up next Monday. Thanks for posting all the pics, folks. That's what swung it for me.

Got one yesterday. Very sharp, even when I open it up. Early days yet, but first impressions are very favourable.
