I'm still loving my Sigma 17-70. 17 is wide enough for most things, and it's flexible with the 70mm end too. Here's a few of my latest shots (all photoshopped - contrast, curves, and a little sharpening):

I took a picture of me pulling on my kitchen wall. Then I used a stock sky image and took it into photoshop and made it look like a curtain that I was pulling. It was raining so i didn't have time to get a picture of the sky myself, which is what prompted me to do this.
The exif for this image is wrong if anyone checks it. It says taken with nikon, well that's because the stock sky image was taken with nikon.

I just got this lens a few days ago. I bought it used from a POTN member. I absolutly love it! It shall be a great walkaround lens that I'll keep in my bag for quite some time.
Here's some of my first few shots. I've never owned a macro lens, so I'm loving the hell out of this really close focusing.

Here's the 100% crop. This picture was also straight from the camera. I only converted to JPEG and boosted the exposure +.35

Uhm... well, I can confirm it works. However, I haven't taken any actual shots with it yet (only really used the 30 and 105mm). Maybe next week when I have a week off I'll have a chance to give it a whooping.

No, sorry. In my opinion (and that of many others no doubt) you should never get the cheap filters.
I have a B+W polfilter, which cost about half the price of the lens itself. But hey, it's worth it :)

It's a JVC R-K22, it's my dad's, and yes it's very very old. It's going through a second (or third) life in it's current location, for background music while my dad plays some darts :p

I really like this lens. I wish it were a constant f/2.8, but heh, wishful thinking. Besides, with the really close focusing for macro, this lens has very narrow DOF and great Bokeh! I was alittle sceptical about this lens at first, because I was going to get the Siggy 24-60f/2.8, but I'm glad I didn't.

I havn't owned the 18-55 IS, but I have owned the Non IS version, and yes, I do think it's better. The build quality feels more solid, and the picture quality is better. Deffinently an upgrade from it.

I was just looking at your pictures on flickr, I like the lighting on the choc ones but find them to be very uniform and generic as if not a lot of thought was put into them. Hope you don't mind me saying this, it's only I have become a fan of your presentation and plating. Unless this is what the client wants, it seems very different from your other stuff.

Hi Chef 21, i made a big mistake with the choco, ltes which is way to shallow DOF, so most of them ended up crap, will now shoot nothing below f11 dfor said chocolates for re-shoot..
i dont understand what you mean by uniform and generic, the chocolates themself or the presentation of them?
anyway thanks for your comments, well appreciated!

Thanks, Kyle. I have problem to post bigger size because of the limit (150kb). I can't get to within that limit with bigger size. Normally, do you set focus to infinity for landscape photography?
BTW, the sky was partially cloudy and the photo was taken without using tripod.

Is it a 100% crop ? The picture seems to have a bit of motion blur, or is that just me ?

Sorry if you find this hard to take, but this is my every day reality. i am sometimes surprised how poeple eat without knowing what they do, i.e. they are very far away from where we once were, catchin, killing, cooking and eating for survival.
anyway this was a pheasant flown in from France, for my game promotion. Legs will be made into a confit, breasts stuffed and roasted and from the left overs we make a nice soup with mushrooms which is served first. so Phesant in three courses! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3028/3062892613_bdae5b1e9d_b.jpg

Well last Saturday, at company dinner, I was suprised at how many people wouldn't eat the served duck because they felt for the thing...
The duck tasted just fine by the way ;)

Hi,
I have not read through this whole thread but i can say there are some great pics posted.
I have had my Sigma 17-70mm for about two weeks now and have been pretty happy with it but i thought it seemed soft in many pictures.
Today i tested it on my XSi versus the kit lens (18-55 IS) and my 50mm 1.8f.
I only was looking at sharpness in the center of the picture. The sigma compared well to the canons at 50mm and 35mm f4.5-10, at 24mm f3.5-6.3 slight edge to kit lens, but when i went wide angle 17mm on sigma vs 18mm kit the kit was much sharper (f3.5-14).
when i saw that i then tried the focus test experiment. Compared to the canon lenses the sigma seemed to back focus much more.
Now i am wondering if i got a bad copy or is it possible the kit lens is actuall sharper? If it has some calibration issues is it possible to only be off at the wider angles?
thanks

TBH I think the kit lens is slated far too much mine is also VERY sharp and slightly quicker to focus by a knats wisker. I have found it can keep up with my daughter just as well I must do a proper test me thinks to compare to your results! I sometimes wish I had gone for the Sigma 18 - 50 f2.8 but I do like the macro this lens has to offer!
If I were advising a newby I certainly wouldn't suggest they bought this lens to improve their pictures over the kit.
Also I think this thread has more than served a purpose now can you tell the quality of pictures apart from other such threads of different lens's? I really can't see the point of this thread becuase the majority of good pictures here are more to do with photographic skill than the lens itself!
Sorry if I have offended anyone maybe someone can tell me what purpose showing small crops of nice pictures serves with regard to lens quality, espcially as there are equal if not better shots in the kit thread?

Because it's fun to show off pictures that just happen to be made with a specific lens. Lens owners bunching together, much like this whole forum is made up of Canon users. And maybe a few stray Nikonians.
But I do agree that we should be seeing more 100% crops in here. They really tell something about the quality of the lens.

Palaima, those are two nice photos of a dragon fly. One thing you migh want to look at though is not necessarily putting the subject in the middle of the shot. It will usaually attract more attention if it is offset slightly (althought this is not a hard and fast rule). Play around with that and see what happens......sometimes it does work in the center though.
Oh ya, welcome to POTN :)

Well you can get it with HSM, sadly only for Nikon mount.
I would prefer a constant f/2.8 to OS, for me that would make it the essential standard lens for use with an APS-C sized sensor. Although the range is probably too great for that.

It's called tilt shift (or in this case a fake tilt shift effect). The gist of it is just masking off part of the image and applying a lens blur and then bumping saturation up a little bit. Pretty easy to acheie and what not. Just google up tilt shift tutorials and you should be set ;)
Glad you guys like it though!

Thanks fellas.
That was the result i was going for was a fake miniature feeling.
It's called tilt shift (or in this case a fake tilt shift effect). The gist of it is just masking off part of the image and applying a lens blur and then bumping saturation up a little bit. Pretty easy to acheie and what not. Just google up tilt shift tutorials and you should be set ;)
Glad you guys like it though!
cool here there is a nice tutorial http://www.tiltshiftphotography.net/photoshop-tutorial.php

My first post and an image to go with it! Have wanted to take a macro with water. This may not be the best subject, but I think it came out fairly decent. I think I'm going to try and use this lens more than I have.

(even if they are resized to max 800pix they still don't show up! What to dooooo?!)
this lens at 17mm is a true joy to use, but if you want to zoom...your 2.8 goes away very fast...

Thanks willy, trying to get the cars (M5 and GTR) back on the track for a photo in the next few days or week depending on how things go. Just hoping that no rain falls or we have hazy skies because it will be near sunset.
