Man after reading this thread, I'm so tempted to get this to replace my kit lens.
Is that a good move or not? The kit lens I've got was supplied with my 350D.
Geoff_Shawcross
27th of January 2009 (Tue), 01:34
Channy, this would be a very good replacement for your kit lens. This lens is fairly easy on the pocket book and works well as a nice walk around lens. It's pretty decent as a macro lens as well with a mag. factor of 1:2 (half life size). You'll also be amazed with just how close the minimum focus distance is. I've taken some shots where the object was literally touching the front element!! The copy that I have is very much tack sharp too. :)
Oh ya, welcome to POTN if you haven't already been welcomed! :)

Thanks a lot Geoff, always nice to hear that your work is liked :D The helicopter was doing a training exercise on teh mountain, the weather was so cold, and very windy, so good practice for the guys i think. It came very close to us, at one point i was above it...

Hey that's so funny, I thought
"...I recognise that I'm sure it's Pen-y-Fan...but Willy's up near Notts / Sheffield so must be the Peak District.."

Did you stack it on top of a UV? Using two filters at once will cause that sort of vignetting.

Swann, no only 1 filter on my lenses, if i take cpl off i put UV and vice versa

I probably needn't have asked actually as I'm sure you're experienced enough to know not to do it.
Do you use a standard 8mm or slim 5mm circular polariser? I have this lens and no polariser for it yet (and there are probably others in a simialr situation). If a standard polariser causes vignetting, a slim one might have to be the go for this lens.
X-Warrior
16th of February 2009 (Mon), 12:05
I actually used UV+CPL on a day out last year because I was too lazy to take the UV off. Caused no vignetting. Horrible misfocusing, but no vignetting...
Mind you, that was the last time I doubled them up.

Hi macobee,
I love all of your food photos, except for these two. Sorry, I find it boring, lack of characteristic. What are those little smudges around the spices? Don't quite get the idea.
I thought you could use textured background to enhance or add a little more "flavor" into it. I've shot some spices last year with my G10, i won't say it's perfect, didn't use any strobes then, only available sun light, shadows were rather harsh but, i don't know, there's something about this photo that the client really like.

yup Geoff.. i love its "macro" ability hehhe, like my prosumer FZ-20 before,
i can close the front element of the lens unto the objects .. COOL!
before i bought this, im tempted to buy Sigma 18-55ex F2.8 or tamron 28-70 F2.8 cause they are on the same price.. but i need more range...
not just the fix F.. and good built quality than the tamron 28-75 F2.8 :)
ahh .. cmon go and shoot shoot ...

What seems to be the sweet spot ( f/stop wise ) with this lens. Seems like a lot of my pictures with this lens are just not crisp and clear. Maybe its my monitor though, because as of late I believe its going bad. Old crt monitor.
Opinions, thoughts please. After looking at the pics I just posted, in the thread they seem fine, but blown up in my software program I'm using they seem blurry, I'm really thinking my monitor is going bad.

The sweet spot for this lens is between f/5.6 and f/11. Good edge to edge sharpness and at f/8 or f/11 good depth of field too. Using a smaller aperture than f/11 (f/13, f/16, etc.) you will lose sharpness due to diffraction.

I still have dreams of OS and HSM on it though.....

Yes it is one of those lenses that takes one's heart away... :D I use it for everything: macro, landscapes, portrait (i must say it is a little bit harsh on skin...i always reduce sharpness than i shoot portraits..) even wildlife shooting :)
Here is my tribute :
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_8lV7Z7-pF9I/Sa7oen8qs0I/AAAAAAAAAHw/ReFStWTnJ78/s912/IMG_8800.JPG
The depth of field at F2.8 is very very very shallow!
http://images46.fotki.com/v1432/photos/1/1242899/5998711/IMG_7612-vi.jpg
As you can see it tends to flare, but just a little bit, this flare is one of the "worst" because i was shooting with a filter on.
http://images47.fotki.com/v1455/photos/1/1242899/5998596/IMG_9394-vi.jpg
All in all a lens that's one of the best of its price (in my country it is about 200 pounds).
But it has some drawbacks, the focusing is quite noisy, i find myself wanting a little bit more sharpness, constrast - but these can be easily corrected in ps.

The IQ of 17-40L is excellent and it brings details which the sigma lacks - which is the main reason I upgrade to 17-40L. I see the immediate difference. Hope this helps.

on a crop body, i would stick with the 17-70, though the 17-40 may be sharper (on the long end), the 17-70 is 2.8 at wide.
the 17-40 is only really useful on a FF camera IMHO.

I see you have the 17-40 L, how do the photo's compare to that of the Sigma 17-70mm?
I had the 17-40L and traded up to the 17-70. A very good move as I did not need weather sealing nor USM (at the time). The 17-70 was sharper at f/4, especially in the 35-40mm range, but by f/5.6 they were equivalent. OOC saturation was better with the 17-40L. Sold the 17-40L and kept the 17-70.
Then I sold the 17-70 to get the Sigma 18-55 f/2.8 macro - a lateral move in terms of optics. But I wanted the constant f/2.8, thus the change. I sold my 18-50 when I moved to full-frame (and now have the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 HSM :D), but kind of wish I had kept it. It was an exceptional copy.
And now, I have the 17-40L again - for its intended purpose; an ultrawide angle zoom for a full-frame camera.

Dear all,
I have own 50D for 2 months, and now I really itching to exchange my kit lens (18-55 IS).
I'm considering about Tammy 17-50 F2.8 and Sigma 17-70mm HSM . I have many good comments about those two lens, and in here those lens also have same price. I have chance to try the Tammy the IQ is OK for me but the AF, its so noisy. I frequency take pictures in seminar, meeting room...
- So I wonder how compare between those two lens about AF sound?
- I also would like to know how the ability of the sigma for portrait ?- the Tammy show a very good ability for portrait @50mmf2.5
any comment will be appreciated

 Stunning shots. So do you also use plastic models like the real pros now ?
The Apple Crumble could've been shot a bit more straight I think.
On the Steak Sandwich I'd have removed that bit of meat at the front, to make it look like a perfectly baked steak. Also, one of the fries has a brown spot. Just turn it around so it doesn't show on the picture.
I think everything should be in focus for the Hainan Chicken, but I suppose that could be a matter of taste :)
Some of the pictures seem slightly overexposed from the rear: Clam Chowder, Escargots, Steak Sandwich.
Everything does look very tasty - good thing I just ate
