Nice product photos with the coke and lemonade; although it would be better if you had it splashing into the actual product's liquid and on a contrasting bright background with a nice hot light against the backdrop.

Swis, this lens is very manageable without OS / IS, obviously IS would be nice but it's not essential and would come at a price!

I was thinking that this lens is actualy so bright that you can set a faster srutter speed, at which speed the photo doesnt need OS? Can it be?
Or all of u are using camera support?

lol yeah this thread is laaarge
I timed autofocus and compared to kit lens (from about 2' to 12') - kit had it by a nats whisker, and this is proven when I shoot my daughter as she is darting round (but I don't use my kit anymore).
So don't try to compare to USM you will only be dissapointed!
Pauly_G
16th of June 2009 (Tue), 03:17
It's not as fast as the USM on my 70-200mm f4L, however it's no slouch either. But overall it's quite satisfactory.

This lens is not really a true macro, i.e. it has a maximum manification of 1:2.3, although the minimum focus distance is great. I typically use this lens as my walk-around jack of all trades lens and it generally performs pretty well. It can be a little soft when wide open, however as soon as you stop it down it sharpens up nicely.
The relatively wide angle 17mm provides a useful field of view, which makes it pretty good for landscape shots.

For a crop camera, I think this is one of the finest lenses available. If Sigma would only put HSM and OS on it, I'd use my crop camera a lot more.

Is it really a 17mm or more like a 25-27mm? The reason I ask is I am debating between this lens and the Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II LD SP ZL Aspherical (IF).
This will be for a walk around lens indoors/outdoors. I will be using it primarily for taking pictures of family/baby/wife.
The reason I am looking at this lens is because it is 100 dollars less that the Tamron.
Tony-S
21st of June 2009 (Sun), 11:35
Optically, it's on par with the Tamron, but its trade-off is longer reach. There's also the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 macro, which is optically the same as each of these lenses, but with better build.

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding these three lenses:
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro
Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II LD SP ZL Aspherical (IF)
Is 17mm on the Sig the same as 17mm on The Tam. I guess its the macro term that is messing with me.
I was thinking since the sig is a macro that the FOV @ 17mm would differ from these two lenses.

Thanks Will. By the time I'd taken the last shots, the sun had disappeared behind a cloud and the lighting had changed somewhat. Compare 2 & 4 in the colour shots to see the difference.
DPP was used for the conversions - changed to mono, applied a colour filter effect and tweaked contrast a bit.

I have to admit I fell out of love with this lens, mainly because it hasn't really had much time on the camera - what with three shinier and more expensive lens....but I put it on the other night and had a play and was impressed with the results. Accurate focus and lovely and sharp once stopped down a bit. Here are four examples, three a little samey...

If i were buying any wide angle I'd be putting my money towards the tokina 12-24.
But if it were any lens i wanted ... then it certainly would be the 85L f/1.2.

Depends on your current camera and lens setup. Also by what you say money doesn't matter either? You should post a new thread instead of in this one.

IMO : do u need ultra wide angle lens ?, because the 10-20, 12-24 isn't have F2.8,
if u want indoor purposing 11-16 F.8 maybe ....
but ur pic will be not all sharp cause that small F setting and it means depend on what u need...
if u need wide-zoom lens and money no probs, maybe 16-35L ?? (how bout that guys) or primes that cool? (but is so damn expensive!)
but if u asking this sigma 17-70, this sigma is cool on outdoor and higher F, like F5.6 or F9 or more ...
for indoor without flash? this sigma will suffer very much, hard focusing...
thats why i need infra red beam on 430EX and sell my nissin...

My first contribution to this thread. I received this lens 2 days ago and have put a couple hundred clicks on it sizing it up, and am thoroughly impressed. A couple of examples. Both have had a little sharpening and small adjustment to layers.

I bought this lens of e-bay a few months ago. After a re-calibration it is now so sharp it hurts. I haven't sharpened a photo in PS since. If it needs it, it probably wasn't a good enought shot!
Anyway, I thought I should contribute something to this thread as it was the reason I bought the lens. I'll start with a duck and post some more soon.

I tried this lens today with a 2x 3'd party teleconverter. Works great. So macro is way closer. And 140mm on the end.
I also tried this combo on FF. The dark sides disappeared so can be used there as well.
Especially the macro capability was interesting since this focus all the way up.
I dont think i'm going to sell this after all. It's getting usefull. And not to big of a package from macro to 140mm.
Will do som pics tomorrow for testing. I'm excited though about this finding.

Other than not having image stabalization or not having a constant aperture (both minor inconveniences to me), it's a great lens. Easy to use with a decent focal range for a crop I find. Also is great for macro shots and close focused shots. You can't go wrong if you pick up this lens. It's treated me well thus far anyways.

What is aperture setting on the first one? I bet it was wide open. When you shoot landscapes, optimal aperture setting's well beyond f/8.
Same about the second one - if you wanted the background to be sharp and well detailed, you should have chosen different settings. Also, it is overexposed (see the white flower in the center).
So I would suggest it's not the faulty lens ;).
Swann1
7th of November 2009 (Sat), 06:09
First one was shot at f/8 @ 70mm. Could also be not enough sharpening applied in post production or sharpness loss due to resizing.. This lens is more than capable, in fact I'd say its capabilities exceed its price point.

yes it changes on 70 mm you will use it mininum 4.5 aperture.so its not constant f/2.8.
JamieDubS
13th of November 2009 (Fri), 16:10
so if you have your camera on manual and you zoom out to 70mm where do you start loosing the 2.8? and will it change on your manual setting to 4.5 or will it stay at 2.8 on the manual display?

17-20mm 2.8
21-24mm 3.2

55-70mm 4.5

will it change on the manual window on your camera?
or will it stay 2.8 on your camera display?
kissel
13th of November 2009 (Fri), 16:35
It will change on the display as well. Also, if you don't change the aperture value and zoom out, it will stick to the maximum aperture value. Same as with any other zoom lens with non-constant aperture.
But why are you concerned? f/2.8 on this lens is usable in very limited conditions.
JamieDubS
13th of November 2009 (Fri), 16:43
cause I will use it from day time into the night time shooting. So I will need a upclose to midrange lens that will help me at night as well. This is wide angle upclose on objects tooo right?
kissel
13th of November 2009 (Fri), 16:53
Depends on what you gonna take pictures of. I think in the dark environment Image Stabilization is more important, if you shoot interiors or landscapes. For people and other moving objects bigger aperture is a must. As an option (quite costly though) is Canon EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS USM. But cheap nifty-fifty (EF 50/1.8 ) along with EF-S 18-55IS might make an extremely cheap and surprisingly capable duet for your needs.

That's odd  ......I don't see a new 17-70 model anywhere on Sigma's home page. The only 17-70 lens they have (the same that I have), starts at f4.5 when at the 70mm end. Are you sure we're talking about the same thing here??

Just looked at your gear list and you have the Canon 17-40mm lens, not the Sigma 17-70mm lens. That's where the confusion lies. ;)

Why are you confused?

Thanks for the link. When I first looked at the Sigma website yesterday, I didn't see the new version listed with all the other lenses. That's why I thought there was a mix up.....hehe.

Wow... that new Sigma looks like a serious piece of equipment. Definately a good contender as anyone's walkaround lens.
