I didn't say anything about the 17-40L, only the new 17-70.

Wow......some of you really need to READ THE WHOLE INCIDENT!!!! If a few of you would have done that, you would have seen that I didn't realize that there was actually a new model out as it wasn't shown when I looked at the website......But that there was a link posted shortly after that and I said something like, "oops, my bad.....didn't see that they actually did have a new model."!!!

I wont yell at you like your caps did me.

I did read the whole thread, I simply said "Funny stuff" after Flam did the same thing you did so no need to get huffy its just "Funny stuff" to read

The new lens has been on Sigmas page for quite some time now?

No worries, all. The original (f/2.8-4.5 non-OS) is a great lens. I had it at one time and it provided me with some excellent shots when I had a crop camera. I'm sure that the new version with OS and 1/3 faster aperture on the long end will be a nice improvement. Go out and shoot some photos!

My appologies Lantz, I didn't actually mean to yell it (so to speak). I was already in a pissy mood from something else and I guess it was just the way you had worded it that kinda set me off. Lets just put the matter behind us shall we.

Please. My appologies too.
I meant no insult by it if it came across that way, I just chuckled and typed it out. probably should have kept it to myself.

I've been looking at the specks for the new lens version, and it looks like it's going to be very intriguing. OS was something I had been wanting on it for a while for one.

When you resize an image, you are trying to fit all of the many pixels and image data from the original picture into a smaller file. In this case, there's really no way to avoid losing image quality in some way or another.

Well, you folks just about have me convinced. But then again so did the guys on the Tamron 15-50 2.8 thread. And the guys on the Tamron 28-75 2.8 thread. And the guys on the Sima 24-70 2.8 EX Macro thread. I'm so confused! Has anyone compared the 17-70 to the 24-70 I mentioned. I know the 24-70 is bigger and heavier with an ungodly filter size. But what about IQ?

hey guys, im considering this lens, the 17-70 f/2.8-4 OS HSM, the EF-S 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, or the EF 24-105 f/4 IS L, I was considering this and the OS version because they are half the price, or less than the other two lenses I'm looking at, I do also like the speed on the wider end of 2.8, however I would really like to have IS as I do quite a bit of low light shooting and this will not be my primary sports lens, I've seen some excellent pictures in this thread, however no one seems to have gotten the OS version yet, does anyone know how that one performs as well? thanks for the help

Designed exclusively for use with smaller chip APS-c or 4/3 cameras

I don't have a FF body to try it with. It might fit and work, but the images will turn out heavily vignetted.

I saw the $100 rebate on the Canon 15-85, and thought about selling this and my 10-20 to get it. And then I take test shots, and talk myself out of it.

Hmm.....Interesting. I don't think I've ever had that problem with my lens (other than when I messed the focus a bit). But I could be wrong. I'd have to take a look at my copy to see if mine does the same. Lenses do funny things sometimes. Perhaps it could be the lens, or as you say, you simply miss-focused. It can be hard to tell sometimes. Do you get these blurry edges at the full range of apeture? (f2.8 to f16 or higher)......Just picking my brain as to any other possibilities.

Well yes... although it has its issues with colors (especially red). But overall it is sharp and has a decent bokeh :) You just need to nail the focus perfectly, then it shines :)

mine normally requires a fair amount of saturation to be added. colors tend to be a little washed out.

mine used to be very harsh with reds (pimples look MASSIVE :D ) .....For portraiture saturation is less of a problem :)

Well Im not having any troubles with color, but im starting to notice troubles with focusing. Ive said before I dont use this lens that much, I use my Sigma 70-200 95% percent of the time. I use the the 17-70 mostly for family get togethers and recently and have gotten alot slightly oof pics. Seems like when I see the view just before I press the shutter, it looks in focus, but when I go to edit the pics. The ones i thought would be good from looking at them on camera look good, but when downloaded are slightly off. Grant it Im using 10D, but I dont see the problem with my 70-200 siggy, it is pretty much on the mark, I dont have the miss-focussing issues with it. I use AI Servo, and use the * for focusing, and he center spot.

All you need is a storm at night, a dry spot, a tripod, some luck and patience.
The first of those is the hardest to get...
I've done one proper storm shoot before, and it's a great experience. Had me a slowly incoming storm at sea for that one ;)

Good for the money, and the limited times I use the length. Wouldn't mind a proper prime though, and it does show a lack of sharpness and strength in some situations on my 50D. Yes, I'm a pixel peeper :P. But the price of a good tele prime just isn't worth it for my limited use.
But as I said: it's a cheap unit, but you get at least what you pay for.

Mine has 0 vignette, then again, this is a crop sensor lens and if you put it on a full frame camera...but that's a different story.

My vignettes quite badly if I put it on the 5D  (actually its quite useful for product work with its minimum focus distance being so close, I just have to crop a lot in post).

On the 30D its perfect though, not even a slight vignette wide open at 17mm.

Davie82

@ Crayons15, I get the impression that the older version of the lens is sharper and optically better, which is why I went for it. And the lens is extremely sharp (see my last picture) however I hope you have better luck with the autofocus than I'm having.

I took the lens out to church today to see how it would perform in a wedding environment, and the results are poor. The lens randomly front-focuses and back-focuses at all focal lengths, and the problem is so bad that not a single one of my AF pics from today has the subject in focus; the only good pictures I got were MF. I have asked the seller for a refund. I love the optical quality of this lens and will definitely buy it again, but I want one that focuses properly and will buy one only if I know it focuses properly.

In low light this lens needs very defined areas of contrast to focus.
In both of your examples your simply asking to much from it. The samsung logo is far to small a contrast difference in an area of pure black. If you had focused on the edge of the screen it would have found focus.

In your second shot it looks like it has focused perfectly on the background. Remember the actual size of the focus sensor is quite a bit bigger than what is shown in the view finder. If you've used the center point I'm guessing its actually focused on the edge of the window.

I've used this lens for 2 weddings, both in very dark churches, and taking the above into account didn't have any major focus issues. As long as I could find something defined enough to focus on it worked very well.
It is not what I would call an ideal lens for the job though, and I would certainly never recommend it to someone who intended to use it to shoot a wedding.

Davie82
19th of July 2010 (Mon), 05:27
Moppie I see what you're saying, but the AF behavour of the lens cannot be blamed on poor light. Not only did I try manual focus, I also used the 50D's AF microadjustment for some of my shots, and when the adjustment was fine-tuned the shots came out perfectly. This however isn't even close to a solution becuase different shots required a different adjustment; some forwards, some backwards. And for what it's worth, with the focus moved forward the full 20 steps, the lens was able to focus on the Samsung logo every time at the same focal length of 48mm, for a number of shots. :p

If you had focused on the edge of the screen it would have found focus.

Without using the AF adjustment, I tried a shot focusing bang in the centre of the screen, and you just don't get an easier or more contrasty AF subject for a lens... and it still wasn't as good as the manual focused shot or the shots taken with the AF adjusted. Suffice to say the lens is on its way back to the seller and I now have to think of an alternative.

I fully understand why you wouldn't recommend this lens for weddings (I wouldn't either), but at the moment I just can't afford the best lenses for that particular job (the usual L series candidates, basically). I'm keen to pick up another copy of this lens because optically I think it is exceptional.

Great pics from a great lens. Fortunately I got a refund for mine immediately, and have to carefully consider whether or not this lens is what I need before I take the plunge a second time. 17-70mm is a very useful focal range and the sharpness makes this lens very tempting...if only I could be assured I wouldn't have AF trouble a second time!

I don't think there is any way to guarantee that if you purchase this lens again that it won't have any problems, and that goes for any lens really. If you truly feel that you need this lens and that it will fit your needs, then get it. When I purchased mine about 4 years ago, I got a great copy and have loved this lens since. Makes for a resonably priced walk around lens that has a ridiculously close minimum focus.
