I currently have the 17-70 and the 18-55 IS. I have been using them side by side a lot lately trying to figure out which one to keep. If I am honest, the 18-55 IS is actually the sharper lens if you pixel peep the corners. But the extra range, extra 2/3 a stop and better colors mean I prefer the images I get from the 17-70 more often than not. Stabilization is nice, but how many subjects sit still and let you shoot 1/10 anyway. Even a flower doesn't do that if there is a faint breeze. Anyway, enough jabber, here is two more samples from my 17-70 at the park:

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp241/tkbslc/lens%20samples/17-70/IMG_8314.jpg

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp241/tkbslc/lens%20samples/17-70/IMG_8310.jpg

I guess I am keeping the 17-70 unless I find a super deal on a 15-85. Even then it would be a hard choice going to a slower lens with poor close focusing.

Lately when shooting indoors, I am leaving this lens with the zoom lock enabled. That way you get a nice 17mm f2.8 "prime" lens with that is sharp wide open.

Well it's a lovely lens but the time has come to let mine go because I now have a 17-40L. On full frame, 28mm at f/4 produces similar DOF to what this lens does on crop at 17mm f/2.8.

tkbslc

I'm sure I would rather be shooting a 24-105L on 5D vs this lens on my 30D, but that's a 4x difference in price!

I just replaced my Tamron 28-75 with this lens, I was a little bit unsure if I was making the right decision, but early indications seem to be positive.
I was choosing between this lens (2nd hand) and the Canon 15-85 which to me seems awfully expensive for what it is to go on my 450D.
Early impressions are it has more vivid colours and contrast than the Tamron. I do miss the constant F2.8 but dam was it so slow to focus.. making shots of my dog or biking etc pretty hard to get perfect. This lens seems to focus faster and more accurately.
I'll try and post up some examples soon.

Now.. on to the next project.. replace the 55-250is with something better or swap the 450D body for something with better AF...

Scott.

Glad you like the lens Scott. It's a great lens for the price. Wait 'till you see how close the minimum focus distance is. I've actually focused on a flower that was just about touching the front element!

i gave my old sigma 17-70 non-OS to my mom yesterday. as a birthday present. she loves photography for decades (and still misses her old minolta stuff) and owns a canon eos 300d for years now. with the old kit-lens. she called me this morning and was really excited about he new lens :-) she is not that "technical" but she directly took notice of the better sharpness and f2.8. this was one of the best presents I ever made :-D I guess i'll give her my eos1000d for xmas.

Hi Chaps,

I'm new here and have just received (literally last night) my new Canon 7D and Sigma 17 - 70. I can't wait to get snapping with it. Loving the shots in this thread, and this has confirmed my choice of this lens over the Canon 15 - 85 (which seems very expensive!).

Will hopefully get some shots up soon when I get some time to play with the camera.

Well, it depends on how much magnicifcation you want/need.
But you get the most magnification out of 70mm, so if you're gonna use that then use around f/5.6 to f/8 to get the sharpest image.
I've done alot at 50mm f/5.6 and even at around 30mm.

Not bad for a first shot with this lens. I think I would have tried an aperture that was a bit more open to get a narrower depth of field. That way you may have been able to better single out one or two of the flowers for the main focus and have everything else more out of focus or blurred a bit. Just my 2 cents. Still like that shot though. :)

WOW! Talk about a long time between posts Bobmatt.....hehehe. ;)

Hello, I got a short question about this lens. I also own it but I am kind of worried about one function. When I have the lens vertical for example shooting the sky or the floor the lens does not maintain the focal length that I have set. It extends or collapses. I know this is kind of common on big lenses, but do you also have this on your lens? It seems that there is no more resistance to hold the front element on its position.

I cannot say if it was like that from the start as I got it as second hand.

My lens creeps as well. Just a little bit though. However, it is not really an issue if you hold your camera/lens properly while shooting, not point and shoot style that is. That said, when I walk around and the lens creeps out...very annoying but on my copy it is minimal.

I keep thinking I need to upgrade this lens because it is getting old and it's cheap, but I can't find anything I like better! Anyway, I used this a lot on a Moab, UT trip last weekend. Great landscape lens.

Yes, this is definately a very capable lens. Pretty much the only reason I'm looking to upgrade to the newer version of this lens is for the HSM (albeit the OS will be a nice addition). Other than that, the original is still a great walk around lens for me right now and still continues to impress me.

Falling in love all over with this lens.. It's so sharp at 17mm, f/2.8.

With the lock function on, it makes a fine 17mm prime.

I've said the same thing many times! It would be well worth the price (esp. used) even if it was just a 17mm f2.8 prime. But of course we get a nice zoom range, 1 stop faster than the kit lens at 50mm, and 1:2 macro thrown in.

True! Although I have a slight feeling that it isn't that sharp at 70mm... It used to be, but I can't seem to get that sharpness back.

Wow just tested it and now I can say: ''sharp'' instead of ''OK''! I always struggled to get a sharp enough image, especially with macro, at f/4.5, but stopping down to f/5.6 really makes a huge difference! Cheers ;)

count me in, I just bought one on Ebay for just on 215 aussie dollars.

If it's as sharp as most of the images in here look, then I'll be a happy chappy.

I just can not stand my 17-85 IS anymore. It's a horrible thing, and seems to be getting worse every time I use it. I was waiting for it to break so I could buy a new copy of the OS version of the 17-70, but it won't stop working!! and I saw this non OS show up, and I'd be an idiot if I didn't grab it for the money I paid.

Hopefully by the end of the week, I'll have a sharp mid range zoom that I actually want to use, as it was getting a little tricky using only my nifty and dust pump!

for the money I paid, I'll take on the "sigma lottery" :p

We have a CR Kennedy office here in Adelaide and I just dropped it in to them. They then sent it to Melbourne i think. I had it back in about 10 days and it cost about $100. It was only slightly back focussing and it took a few weeks for me to even notice initially. When yours arrives just get out and take some shots, don't do focus tests and look for problems, if it looks good it is good. I only discovered it when I was pushing it at 2.8. Hope yours is a goodun. :-)

Thanks for the info snapper.

checked my ticket today, but didn't win....kind of.

I thought I got a shocker after my first few shots, all really soft, so did some quick MA adjustments and bam, we have a winner....or so I thought. After some more shots at Ma set at -20? ( or whatever maxed out is) now I have a lens that backfocuses at 17 and front focus at 70.....or is that the other way around?....not that it matters. Makes MA pretty much useless in this case.

Ah well, I'll spend more time trying to fine tune it and if that doesn't work (which it won't I'm guessing) I'll prob do the same as the guy I bought it from and pass it on to the next person without mentioning anything in the ad.

Should I bother getting it calibrated? don't know if I could be assed yet. cost me 220 odd delivered, another $150 or so for calibration and freight.....for another 100 I could own a brand new OS version.......assuming that one doesn't have issues out of the box of course. Being the first time owning any sigma lens I now understand the meaning of the "sigma lottery" Reminds me of Forest Gump "Sigma is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get!"

The shots that do come out in focus (normally the bits behind or in front of what I actually want) are very nice however, much cleaner than I generally get from my 17-85, so that's a bonus......I guess.

Zoom creeps at anything outside of 17 or 70, but that's no biggie really. Focus speed is fast enough for what I will be using it for, and it's nice and quiet. Build quality looks great..... and the price I paid was good, it's just a pity the pictures aren't the best they could be.

I'll post some shots later to show you what I'm working with.
