BTW, does anyone know what aperture produces the sharpest image on this lens?

gef

I find somewhere around f/5.6 - f/8 from general observation. I haven't preformed a detail comparison myself.

gflatt is right, the sweet spot is between 5.6 and 8. But it's sharp enough even at 2.8 ;)

Hi Rakesh,
Actually I tried to buy this lens in Bombay but most of the dealers didn't had it in ready stock. The asking price was varying between dealers from 15,500Rs. to 17,500Rs.
The distributors for India M/s Ameeko Marketing was asking around 16,500 and he had only one piece to show. And I was not very sure about that particular piece, whether it is a good copy or not.
So, I was wondering if you could suggest a delaer in Bangalore who would allow me to test the lens before buying, since I'm also from Karnataka.

Dear Raphel

In Bangalore the Authorised ealer for Sigma is Foto Circle and contact person is Jayesh (Ph. 9845022654) and give him my reference in order to get best deal.

Regards

Rakesh

The 17-70's macro capability is very impressive indeed!

I recently purchased the Sigma 50mm F2.8 Macro, now this lens is a true macro lens but after doing several shots & plenty of tests I actually found out that the 17-70 was so good that the money spent on a true macro lens just wasnt worth it, the difference was so minimal, ok the 17-70 doesnt do 1:1 but what it does do it keeps up with a true macro lens very well.

Here is a recent shot I did for a commercial site:

Anyone using a Circular Polarizer? Anyone using any grads...Cokin P series perhaps?

Thanks for seperating me from $325 :)...make that $400 as I'm also probably going to by a 50mm 1.8...make that $450ish cause I'm probably going to buy a polarizer. Damn you POTN!

I use a polariser & nd grads on the 17-70, it all works fine, the P series holder doesnt cause any problems like vignetting at 17mm.

Man, why wouldn't they put a FTM focus on it? Argg. My 18-50mm EX doesn't either and it drives me nuts yet my 10-20 EX does. It still looks to be a great lens for the price. How does the build quality compare to that of their EX line?

I recently tested out the Sigma 50mm F2.8 EX Macro lens & as far as build quality the 17-70 is basically an EX lens, it was identical in every respect to that particular EX lens.

Infact the macro capability of the 17-70 was so good I sent the F2.8 Macro lens back for a refund, it WAS better but not that much better.

I cant understand why they didnt call it the 17-70EX, maybe because its not a constant aperture? I dont know, build is identical to the EX lenses.

If I were you I'd just replace it. You have the Canon 70-300 IS and it will pair with that very nicely... IMO it's worth changing the lens when you need more range than the 70mm given the improved quality of the images you'll get!

Get macro diopters to stick on the end of your lens. I used them with much success on my 24-70 last year. They go for about $25/set on ebay.

gef

The 17-70 isn't an EF-S mount, it's EF mount. Therefore it should work with the Kenko tubes. It still has a reduced image circle, but it can be mounted on cameras that do not accept EF-S lenses such as the 300D I believe...

gef
22nd of February 2007 (Thu), 12:35
Also Canon does have an extension tube that accepts EF-S mounts, I'm guessing you could probably use the kenko tubes in addition to the canon tube on EF-S mounts??

evandavies
22nd of February 2007 (Thu), 12:49
The 17-70 DOES work with the Kenko tubes because I just tried them in a shop.

It may not be the ideal lens for tubes because its already got REALLY close focus. I tried all 3 tubes at once and the focus distance was about 7mm from the front element!!!

Nick_C

cameras that do not accept EF-S lenses such as the 300D

The 300D was the first camera to have the EF-S mount. It was the first camera to come bundled with the 18-55 EF-S kit lens. The 10D, D30 and D60, all had small sensors, but would only accept EF mount lenses.

I particually like the 17-70 because it can focus as close as you want it too, unlike other lenses that may have a 1m mfd with this lens you can leave it on the camera all the time & it doubles up as a good macro lens when outdoors, saves carting another lens around!

I dont think there is any better lens around at the moment, nothing comes close to the optics on the 17-70, focal range & macro capability, the only lens I would like is the Canon 17-55IS but thats a little short at 55mm & again the price tag is too high for me at least.

Wow, you folks finally twisted my arm enough, some great images from this lens! I just purchased one last Friday from an Ebay seller(I know, sorry) called cameraspot.com for $340 shipped. They are evidently a retail store called Delaware Camera in Buffalo, N.Y., are an authorized Sigma dealer and seem to have a good reputation. I called their 800 number and the gentleman explained who they are and if I had any problems to call him back and they would make it right. I'll post some images when I receive the lens!

Im sure you will, unlike the 18-50EX the 17-70 seems to have had better quality control, maybe they have learnt their lesson!

I really hope so Sigma learned their lesson , but not sure about the Sigma color tone is the same as the cooler color tone of genuine Canon lenses that all Canon lenses seem to share .

My Tamron had very warm and yellowish color tone and I decided to return it .

Any way , I like the images I see here , those are all great , thanks for all your posts.

Thank you guys , great shots . I love the watch shot , that is really scary detailed.

Also, the Audi is so cool .

This lens is very sharp and well, I will give it a try since this lens is really cheap here (costs only 300USd).

Thanks for those really stunning shots posted here.

All are amazing, fabulous shots.

PS. do you guys know anything about this site and can trust the words there?

Is the EF-S17-55IS that bad ? In this test , the EF-S17-55IS performs worse than the EF-S17-85Is.

I only ever use jpg mode for burst shots, I consider raw the only way to shoot, yes it does take a little longer to process the images but you have full control over what they look like with no crappy in camera processing.

It all depends on how fussy you are, I personally think its a substandard lens where 90% of the money spent has gone into the IS, the optics are not very good & the distortion is quite bad, not to mention problems with high CA.

Some people might however love that lens, it depends on what your expectations are like.

Phew!
I just read through this entire thread. Awesome pics. Is this lens compatable with the 5D, if not is there a Sigma lens which is? Seems I haven't seen a reply from someone with a 5D. Is there a problem with the large sensor of the 5D? Maybe a different zoom which would compliment my 35-135? I would like two more lenses. One macro/wide angle and another zoom for the other end of the spectrum...up to 300-400. Sigma seems the way to go to save $ over the L series

It WILL fit onto a 5D but the 17-70 has a reduce image circle, its designed purely for cropped cameras like the 350/400D/30D etc..

I cheked the 17-85IS and the Sigma, the Sigma seems to have better BQ than that of the Canon.

Plus, the Canon is over priced here , that costs about 700USD while the Sigma costs only 300USd .

So I think I will order it as my store get new one coming in on Wed day.

Thanks for your advice .

Well that's just what I'm asking. Since this lens does not take advantage of the FF image sensor, is there a sigma lens similar to this one which does? Good quality w/o the cost of an L

Nick_C

You could have a look at lenses like the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro, but to be honest nothing really matches the 17-70, it seems you either have to pay a fortune to get a similar lens or if not then you either lose focal range or the macro end suffers.

Here's a shot I snapped today on campus just testing out my newly-arrived 17-70. I had been somewhat concerned, being a landscape guy, that the color rendition and saturation of this lens would not be up to the standards I was looking for, but the images I shot today largely put that worry to rest.

Only PP was Canon-recommended level of USM before resizing. No filters (not even polarizer, just a nice sky today!).

I love my 17-70, as with any lens its softer when you shoot wide open at F2.8 but at least it CAN do F2.8, but I can count the number of times ive had to use F2.8, its not very many, when I do find the light isnt enough its handy to shoot wide open & ive still got some impressive results.

Overall there is nothing really bad about the 17-70, I class it as THE ultimate walkaround lens (for that price bracket), of course if you go up in price the Canon 17-55IS is a better option, but while you gain IS you do lose on the focal length & macro side, not to mention the bank balance.

Overall its pretty darn hard to beat, the Sigma 18-200OS & Tamron 18-250 are out any day now but the price of the Sigma in the UK is £399 & its a similar story for the Tamron, WAY more expensive than the 17-70 & while they could be classed as the BEST EVER walkaround lens, I doubt if the optics will be that good on either lens.
