After a REALLY bad experience with a photbank, the UPS man brought me a 40GB Hyperdrive today. So far I love the thing but I have a question that I can't figure out from the user manual. How do i format this thing? I did have to format it when I turned it on before using it and that went fine. Now I have a small amount of photos on it. 2 folders with 2 or 3 photos each, just testing the thing out. I know I can delete the contents through the computer but i was hoping to figure out a way to clear all photos using the unit. The manual (page 16-17) says to scroll up once when the capacity is displayed and the formatting indicator will appear then press down the scroll wheel and formatting will begin. When i see the capacity pressing scroll up once it displays the first folder of photos. Any help on how to get out of browse mode and format would be appreciated.

Nevermind. It was wayyyy in the back of the user manual listed under "re-format" rather than "format".

It's a case of putting an empty file called "format70.cmd" in the root of a 256mb memory card then inserting it into the slot and letting the hyperdrive pick it up.

I keep an old 16MB card just for that purpose. It's a goofy secret combination like a video game, but after a few times it's quick. Insert card, turn on unit with button pressed, rotate up, rotate down, push button. I've gotten into the habit of just reformatting after downloading (and verifying success!) kind of like a giant CF card.

I can live with formatting it only at home when it gets fragmented i guess. I don't have any old cards laying around to carry.
If anyone is thinking about a hyperdrive, I give it a huge thumbs up.

I think that's the strength of the Hyperdrive - it cannot be formatted accidentally. You need to use a memory card for the formatting file
