Who else is from Vancouver here?

I was thinking we should get a discussion going of your favourite places to shoot. I shot the pic in my avatar on the waterfront in Yaletown. I've had pretty good luck shooting around there.

What about the rest of you?

Oooh, this is something I've been searching for! haha
What kinda places you looking for?

Here are a few of my faves.
- Granville Island (Great industrial feel, great view of the Burrard st Bridge at night)
- Stanley Park (Great view of Canada Place, Totem poles, Lions Gate Bridge, etc.)
- The road to Cypress (There's a pull out with a great view of Vancouver)
- Burnaby & Deer Lake (Burnaby Lake has tons of birds depending when you go)
- Number of places around Richmond (see here http://www.geog.ubc.ca/richmond/city/naturalareas.htm)

I'm looking for places to do a car shoot if anyone has suggestions.

Walk around Yaletown, you'll see lots of Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. ;)

Keep your eyes open for car shows and open race days which happen fairly regularly. I have some car friends that I can ask for more details.

well, I have a few cars of my own I wanna shoot. I've wanted to do Yaletown but it's always busy or packed there. I suppose I need to be there around 3am for a night shoot after the clubs are done..

Hi there.
I used to live in the Yale Hotel when they first refurbished it (I know-it's technically in Gastown). I rented a flat in Yaletown when they first started gentrifying it. They offered me a chance to go condo but I thought.. "Naaaah. It'll never really take-off".
Live and still not learn!
Unfortunately, IMO, all the really interesting bits of Vancouver were wiped out in the '80's property boom. (old Robson St.,the freight warves and piers, 4th Avenue, etc.). Oh well, at least you stay caffinated 24/7..
The woods around UBC are good for some animal life as are the ones behind Spanish Banks. Point Grey, Kerrisdale and Shaunassey have a nice eclectic selection of houses that are worth shooting. The Marine Building I can never get enough of, and of course there's Lynn & Capilano canyons. SFU is always a good bet and I'd really like to see a shot from ON TOP of Lions Gate Bridge.
Regards,
Wombat

There are still some interesting shots to be had in Gastown, especially down near the docks where the old sugar refinery is. If you go east of there there are some pretty seriously run down old buildings that are still in operation for some character shots.

It depends of what you'd like to shoot, but for birds, you can go to Reifel Sanctuary (in Delta). Otherwise, as mentioned, Stanley park is one of my favs ;-)

I've had some good luck at the bird sanctuary as well. That whole area is nice for farm shots as well.

Another place I like for landscapes is Golden Ears provincial park. There are some very nice shots of mountains to be had there.

Iona Beach out by the airport can be very beautiful at dawn, espeically when the temperature drops below 0 and the tide is out. There's also a bird sanctuary for those interested in birds. There is motorcycle racing out at Mission Raceway Park, if speed is more your thing - www.missionraceway.com for a schedual. The downtown east side is always interesting.

Surrey Central is a really photogenic area, as is the area around the Patullo/Skytrain bridges. I also like the Belcarra/White Pine area in Port Moody. I haven't been out to too many places yet though, keep sharing!

There's a road just east of the airport that comes off of the 99 airport exit AFAIK. I see people parked there every now and then but I don't think they're taking photos.

I have a MASSIVE Reifel addiction currently.

Prompted me to flog my 100-300, and my 100mm macro. Picked up a 70-200 f4L, and TRYING to purchase a 100-400L

Ahh.. stupid work gets in the way of wandering the sanctuary.

Hastings park is kinda cool..
Lighthouse Park in west van is nice for ocean/cliff shots, sunsets rule from there.

The massive destruction in Stanley park has plenty of pull still.

Hey, has anyone here done the Chief? A friend and I are planning on hiking it later this year and bringing along our camera gear. What's the hike like? Lens suggestions? I'll prob'ly bring my tamron and sigma at the very least. I'm sure the 50mm can tag along since it's so small anyways but should I be thinking about renting a 70-200mm or something longer?

i have hiked the chief, there are some great possibilities for water shots of the creek that flows down the trail as you go up
The views of the the mountains are amazing once at the top.
I am a noob and haven't hiked the Chief since getting into photography, but basically when you get to the top you 360degree views.
I would head out early so as to avoid the harsh light

It's 600 metres of vertical. Pack light and hope you have good knees. I got as far as the waterfall and I was done.

Anyone got some Mk.II knees for sale?

Gujustud
11th of May 2007 (Fri), 22:21
haha, the chief is awesome. The official name is Stawamus Chief Park (http://www.stawamuschiefpark.ca/). I haven't actually done it lately for a few years, but I'm being bugged to take some noobs up it.

Cos, you should join me on the grind this year. I did it 14 times last year. My first time was 1hr, and my last time (goal that I set from the first time) was 49:30. I had to break 50min. My goal this year is to break the 45min mark. I'm already feeling the burn and the route isin't even open yet! You'll feel like a new man by the end of the summer. I was probably in the best shape of my life at the end of last summer. Winter made it goto 'waist' tho :P

The scene at the top of the grind is also awesome, just looking over the city. I've always wanted to take my camera up, but thats a few extra pounds that I need to carry, and every lbs makes a diff.

The secret is not to burn yourself out, ie: don't hit it hard. Take it easy, and take breaks. After a hour or so, you'll hit your second wind, and you'll keep going and going like the energizer battery.

I wanna find some old industrial areas and some old abandoned areas. Wanna take some creepy and interesting shots. Any ideas?

DimensionZero

Hey Rebel_Yell, welcome! :)

There are some pretty neat places around East Van along the water but I've always been too scared to go on my own at night. lol

The Chief was fuuuuun btw!
It was a little daunting when the first thing you see at the beginning is a rock you have to scale to even get started, but I found it to be a pretty easy climb. I would say for the most part, it was easier than the Grind since it's not as vertical but there are parts where there's not really any real trail to follow LOL.

I only went to the first peak, but plan on going back some time to do the 2nd and 3rd.

I also want to find a time to do the hike up Golden Ears but will need to be extra prepared for that one since someone told me that as of about 2 weeks ago, there was still snow at about 9km in (don't know what the elevation is at that point). Maybe even spend the night at the Alder Flats campsite on the way back.

Rebel_Yell

Yeah the Chief is cool. Id like to go out and take some morning shots of the woods. And sunsets...when is the best time to find mist in the woods or on lakes? Morning?

As for the east, I agree. I wouldnt go on my own or with 2. Would have to be a few people. And I wouldnt wanna bring too much gear. haha I wish I had my camera when I worked at a plant down there. We had big meat grinders with giant pits filled with unwanted animals and animal parts. it was so gross. But I tried to get a pic of it, ust had a horrible camera at the time...it was really macabra.

DimensionZero
18th of July 2007 (Wed), 03:30
lol, i can only imagine the nastiness there!

I would imagine the early morning just after sunrise would be a great time to catch the mist coming off the ground. It would have to be a sunny day of course, and I think some time this week when the rain stops would be perfect since it would be cold and damp the night before...

Weather network says sun returns on Tuesday so my prediction would be that morning would be the best chance of getting a good amount of mist.

Can anyone recommend any good shops to get some Canvas prints done?

I used clubcard for my first two canvas prints. Worked out to around $140/each for a 16x24. That included stretching and binding to wooden frames. From some searching other companies i've come across are: Pbase Media (http://www.pbase.ca/i/fine_art_prints_vancouver.php), Tony Savino (http://members.shaw.ca/tonyscanvas/), and Fidelis (http://www.fidelisprintmaking.com/).

I was really impressed with the two canvas prints from Clubcard, but I figured I'd look around (clubcard was quick and able to get them done in 3 days for me, which was the reason I went with them).
