I just took my first panorama in stich assist mode and
I was very impressed. However, I had camera set for
raw and it gave me jpegs instead..is this an automatic
feature of this mode? How do I shoot panoramas in
raw?

You cant save in Raw format in Photostitch mode. It doesnt allow that. If you want to save in Raw when doing Panoramas meter the scene through the camera to determine its dynamic range. Check the shadows and the Highlights. Then set the camera to a mid range exposure this will give you the best exposure for the entire panorama. Take each picture with the remote so you dont shake anything during the exposure.

When you shoot in the Panorama mode with the G-1, the camera locks you into JPEG and helps assist you in lining up the overlaps. However, you can use the Photostitch software without the Panorama mode in the camera. Once you know how much to overlap (vertical, horizontal and 2x2, (I presume you are using a tripod) you can shoot in ANY mode, including RAW (P, Tv, Av, or manual). Probably should use the same exposure settings for all shots in a series to make stitching easier. After converting the series of shots to TIFF the Canon Photostitch program will work ok. Carsten, the author of the thread below, has photos throughout showing 3x2 and macro stitches using TIFF.

Its a lengthy workaround for a high quality, really wide angle, yes?
