I went with my family to just watch but on a whim asked if I could shoot from the inside. They gave me an armband to indicate that I'm allowed in, and off I went. I was about 20 feet away from the vehicles as they passed right in front of me. Everything shot with XT + 24-70mm f/2.8L.

I also weaseled a free advertisement from the announcer by handing him a stack of business cards. He told everyone right after they announced the winner that photos will be available at my website. :D

Thanks all. It's redneck city and pretty lowbrow overall but a lot of fun to shoot. I got a headache from the 4500 horsepower jet engines @ 20 feet distance though. They literally shake through your entire body. I had trouble panning. :)

That looked like a lot of fun.

Jon.

I can't believe you stood next to those jet engines without being able to cover your ears. I watched one of those from the grandstands once and I had my head in a vice practically I was pressing my hands to my ears so hard. Unbelievably loud. The power of the last one to twist that truck up like that is crazy.

Yeah Jon it was a bit of fun. Got a bit dusty but not nearly as bad as I used to at the race track every weekend. Hopefully the free announcement blurb will spark some photo sales, or at least curious visitors to the website and maybe other bookings.

rbush83, it wasn't too bad at the time...but I sure felt it later! Here's the wife of the owner/driver of that blue beast. She beat him on the first run but came about 7 feet short of his mark on the pull-off for the final win.

That's a lot of depth of field for f/2.8? It must be your distance from teh subject.

Nah Justin I don't figure on making much, if anything, off of this. I did it on a whim but figured the free P.A. plug couldn't hurt, especially since I'll be in the business directory when the new book comes out this month. Just kinda puts a bug in everyone's ear. ;)

rbush if you look close you can see the only thing truly in focus is the chrome air cleaner on the side of the truck...but I was also shooting at 24mm so it gave me more than I would have at a more telephoto setting. I did crop a little but not much...mostly just to tighten up the composition just a tad. With everything shakin' you can't really see what's focused and what's just vibration at this size image anyway...

Yeah some were loud. Not many though. I didn't even really hear the big rigs and tractors. I can get into a zone where I don't hear anything. Kind of wierd but after the first super modified whatever the hell they're called (like the first photo I posted), I didn't even hear those.

They were in my town...Shippensburg, PA.

I didn't use flash even though I had it mounted. I think they put in new (or more) lights because I don't remember it ever being that bright.
