Thats the difference between your 120-300 with a street price of £ 1400 and a Sigma 70-300 with a street price of between £ 100 and £ 180 depending on type...

can't go wrong with the sigma 70 - 200 f2.8 , much better focus and sharpness when compared to the 70-300 just not the same range

Were they taken @300mm?
The 70-300 is a lot sharper if kept closer to 200 than 300.

Looks like a fun day.
I also have a Sigma 70-300, which is now my backup to my 120-300.
As NordieBoy said, it's sharpest between 70-200. Possibly the shots just have to much motion blur? Were they slow shutter speed like 1/125 and less?
As your panning a car from the 3/4 view, at a slowish shutter speed, you end up with the centre of the car being sharp or static looking, but the front and back ends are starting to fuzz out. I still find 1/250 and 1/320th to be best for getting sharp shots most of the time, and still showing some background blur.

You captured the action very well but the images are all soft. Did you try applying some Unsharp Mask in Photoshop?
