View Full Version : Manual noise reduction

OK Crazy idea time, I am aware that the G3 takes two photos when taken in low light at long shutter times (not sure the actual figure), one is with the shutter closed and is uses to work out what the noise is in the actual image to remove it.

This is cool; however can this be done manually? I quite often shoot in low light conditions, and cannot use a flash, due to the distractions it creates, to get reasonable exposures I need to run at ISO 400, however as a result of this I get a fairly high level of noise. Is it possible to take an image with the lens cap closed to create a 'noise reference image', so I can then use it in Photoshop or similar to remove the noise?

My understanding is that the noise levels are not consistent, so one of these images would probably have to be taken each time I shoot.

Any thoughts?

(Buying a EOS300D, as it suffers from less noise is not a valid answer for me, way out of my budget!)

Try NeatImage to remove the noise; it works remarkably well, and it's free (non-expiring trial) for non-commercial use.

www.neatimage.com

They have user-submitted noise profiles (you can download them as well) for a variety of cameras, so you don't need to make your own if you don't want to. Instructions/tutorials are on the site.

Just tried NeatImage, its great! Just what I needed, took some really noisy low light shots I had taken, and cleaned them up really nicely!

That is another really cool tool to add to my tool box.

It's pretty good! If you ever register (buy) it, you can queue up unlimited pics and have it de-noise them as you sleep, dozens or hundreds of them (instead of just 2 at a time), if you get the pro version. Line 'em up and go to sleep. It also has some added functionality that make it worth the price (48-bit TIFFs, drag and drop, EXIF-friendly).
