Took few shots at a Cajun Jam recently...Lights were beastly! They chased the players out at 9, but they all stayed outside and jammed so I had a more relaxed more open area to shoot from.
1st shot is Adel Ariba (triangle) and Anne McCabe and the second is Tom Hall, but I was trying for an artistic shot and deliberly focused on instrument in foreground. C&C Welcome.

My only recommendation would be to try Custom White Balance ... in this type of consistent (although poor) non-white lighting it can make a startling difference ... see attached which is a poor approximation.

I like the first one. Color cast could be less though...
The second one doesn't work for me: I see a blurred BG, and the *backside* of the instrument thats *almost* in focus... ;)

I think this is the 2nd time you have recommended cwb... I promise to try this next time I shoot. Your edit looks much better. I tried upping the lighting/constrast, but I just blew the background out, so I just posted as is..Thanks much.

Try CWB, you'll like it! If you have trouble doing it, go to the EOS camera forum.

Oh, and get rid of the filter in front of your lens.... (ghost image of the window in the bottom of the first picture)

Or maybe just clean the filter? :-)

What is this? Pick on Linda Day? I do need to get a good cleaning kit. Plus my sensor is starting to look like my ex's abstract paintings...I need some classes too, starting to think I suck as a photographer. As always I do appreciate advice, though not always what I'd prefer to hear!

Hi Linda! ;)
Nope, just pointing out something you might have missed. Doesn't mean you suck. In fact, my first comment was 'I like the first one'.
I tend to be kinda fussy. So I'll mostly have something to comment on. On my own images as well... Hindsight is always 20/20 vision ;)

Oh, my, I would not have taken you for being so sensitive about advice from folks who really only wish to nuture and love you! When we think you suck we'll take a line from Danielle Peck's new tune, "It sucks to be you!" But until we tell you that explicitly please don't draw unwarranted conclusions! It takes years to learn to do this ... I am always surprised that some people appear to think concert photography is a piece of cake ... if that was true I wouldn't get paid so well or have the VERY EXPENSIVE equipment I have. So, clean the filter and get back on the horse and shoot some more!

Dwight,
Brushing myself off and preparing to remount :D
Not you...just me getting impatient with myself.. I have just been feeling lately like my mojo-ability has been evaporating. But really have been branching off in probably too many directions too fast. I really do welcome your wisdom and appreciate that you take the time to give guidance. No worries. Just impatient to run with the big dogs!

Well, you clearly need to see what I shoot with at concerts so check this out: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=1687884&postcount=373 and get back to me! :-)

DURN! I have already been lusting for the ID Mark IN and that 300 but now...I really like the leveling head setup. I used my tripod trying to shoot fireworks last night and it was a PAIN! I think I feel a need to refinance coming on.. Seriously that helps mucho!
