I'm debating between the Sigma 120-300 2.8 and the Canon 100-400 f4 for shooting football and lax. I understand that the Sigma 2.8 will be great for fading light during football season, which is why I'm leaning this way... Question is, I currently have a Canon 70-200 2.8 - will the 300 be worth the extra $$?? I'm a terrible judge of distances - seems to me the extra 100mm would be good for shooting lineman, far end of the field etc. Am I crazy? Or should I get the Canon 100-400 and decide that this lens is for daytime only? I have a Canon 10D, which is not great with ISO above 1600.

Get the Sigma. The extra 100mm is worth it, and the images this lens produces are sooooo sharp.

First of all, what sports are you shooting at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)? :D
Second, I would definitely go with the Sigma 120-300 over the Canon 100-400 for sports. If you need extra reach, you could always pop on a 1.4X TC and still have a 168-420 f4. And for high shutter speeds, you're gonna need the larger maximum aperature.

Whoa! I missed the LAX part. I wouldn't shoot anywhere near an airport with a long lens. Security tends to get pretty excited about that and not in a nice way.

I think he was referring to some type of sport there...which one I don't know...that shares the same acronym. I was just making a joke about the airport.

lax = lacrosse
also the airport but he mentinoed football so yea... lacrosse
Also you said you have the 70-200 f/2.8 already. Why overlap the focal length so much.

Be warned. The 120-300 is superb, but extremely heavy after a very short time. Mine stays on the monopod almost all the time when i use it, but i have the 100-400L for mobility :)

I would definitely go for the 120-300mm f/2.8 for sports. The Sigma produces excellent images!! Faster is always better, especially where sports or action is concerned, fast shutter can stop action, IS can not.
