Challenge #26- Sports( stadiums, arena's, clubhouses, etc.)

I am into all kinds of sports and enjoy the architectural aspects of these buildings, especially golf clubhouses( not restricted to these). They may range from small to large and are not restricted to professional sports teams, do your best to bring a creative perspective of these facilities.:)

The rules don't say nothing about a "real" sports arena... just wanting to have some fun

Built by town optimists and men on relief during the depression, this 1935 sports complex is still in use.

We don't have much in the way of arenas and such out here in rural Maryland, but we do have a jousting track. Here is one of the three arches, which was constructed by a local Eagle Scout as his project.

The Arena has a spectator capacity of 1200 and an ice surface of 90' x 200' It has six dressing rooms, a canteen and a viewing area/meeting room. There is also a swimming facility attached. The swimming pool is at the front, arena is at the rear.

Sorry about all the signs, I couldnt get away from them!

The contest is now closed....I guess the subject wasn't the best or not enough accessability. Any feedback? It's not the quality of the submitted entries, just the low # of them. Hopefully, if I get another chance I'll have a more creative challenge. The genesis of my thoughts were on places such as Camden Yards, Louisville Downs, Monmouth Park race track, and Clubhouse @ St. Andrews (Golf). Although, the entries gave me a perspective and insight into the "hometown" arena's which you probably visit more often. I liked that!

This weeks winners:
First place- The arena for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys and Professional Bull Riders. None of these arenas in Jerzee:lol:. I definitely got a feel for the place with this photo(that's what photography does for me)! Having a few horses in the pix would enhance it even more.
Second place- Standing the test of time, Civic Center, British Columbia. Again this photo has a hometown feel to it. Sometimes simple lines and a few vivid colors does the trick!
Third Place- The Alamo...dome. I love looking at intricate design features and this dome has them. I like the fact that you focused mainly on the cable suspended roof structure. It makes you say...How'd they do that? And then showing the whole structure to gain perspective.

Thanks to all who entered!!!!!

Congrats to all winners, nice pics, tough subject, but interesting...
Boomer, I think it was a great subject (Thinking as architect ;-) ) but no time to drive to take some pics of real sports arenas jejejeje

Cheers and again congrats

Thanks for the second place and I can appreciate how disappointing it must have been to get such a poor response to a subject that obviously interests you.

One problem is that most sports arenas are (in my opinion) plain ugly and not attractive subjects for photography, probably because they are often purely utilitarian and built to a tight budget and are totally uninteresting. Another factor may be that people just didn't have any sports arenas or golf clubhouses etc. near their home - they aren't found in every town and village.

Good job from everybody. I would have loved to have driven down to Camden Yards and gotten a few shots, but 1 hour 1 way is a little too much gas :). Around me, all I have are a few golf clubhouses, but I just didn't find them interesting, or unique enough to photograph. Don't worry about the subject. That is part of the reason it's called "a challenge".

Stefan,

Don't know if you've ever been there but some good opportunities to photograph. A few from my visit in the summer of 05'......... Taken with older 2mp nonCanon camera..

Side note: that day Raffy was suspended from baseball for steroid use!

Hello Boomer -

I'm stunned and surprised that you selected my entry, thank you!

The arena is in Cheyenne, Wyoming and workers were putting on the finishing touches before Cheyenne Frontier Days which starts July 21 - the "granddaddy of them all" for professional rodeo and bull riding. All of the fences, rails and signs were just painted...in fact, several railings were still wet with paint when I went in to shoot!

In my opinion there are no crazier people than bull riders - up to eight seconds of terror, praying not to break anything when getting off, just to turn around and do it again.

You commented:
"...the entries gave me a perspective and insight into the "hometown" arena's which you probably visit more often." - that is probably the greatest thing to take from the challenge you selected. Although I live in a city with professional football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer AND lacross, I was really looking for a sandlot baseball field, the true "field of dreams" - but time ran out.

Ask and ye' shall receive. This pic was taken minutes before the one I entered.

Hiya diminished...

just wanted to ask where do you post the announcements of these contests for the small cameras.. I seem to only see the posts after the contest has closed... am I missing announcements of these contests in another forum heading??

Cheers!

Chad (diminished) doesn't personally announce each contest. He is the person who got the contests started back in January and keeps the statistics of the winners. The contests are typically announced on Mondays or Tuesdays by the winner of the previous contest. You probably keep checking on Monday morning, because that's when each contest ends. :)

Boomer - yes, I have been to Camden Yards many times - I grew up in the Baltimore area and it is still the closest big city for me. I just have not taken any pictures of it. I will probably be going august 1 so we'll see.

Boomer, thanks for the third place. My problem was the opposite of everyone else. I had too many places to pick from. I came up with 20 places I wanted to take a look at. Out of those I took at least some shots of 10 of them. It was fun going into places that are "off-limits". I found out if you act like you belong there, nobody bothers you. The last 2 challenges have given me the chance to go to lots of places around town that I have not been to for years, some of them 30 to 40 years. Thanks!!!

GEWB, I think your picture with the horses is a much prettier picture than the one you entered. I like the colors and the simpler back ground, good job.

I really like the way estrugo thinks "just wanting to have some fun". Thats what it's all about, isn't it. Congratulations to everyone that entered, we had a chance to get out of the house with our cameras and a mission, so we all won.

Hello Spur -

Thanks for your kind words. I selected the entry because of the dark fences making nice angles and to give the pressbox/staging house some height.

"Spur" as in cowboy? Are you going to Frontier Days this month?

No, last time I rode a bull was 40 years ago. We were dumb enough to do it for fun, we never thought anyone would pay us for it. Of course the bulls we rode were tiny compared to what they ride now. I just came up with "spur" because I was watching a basketball game when I registered , oh and I can spell it sometimes.

I want to thank boomer for taking my place in hosting the week's contest. I, too, thought more would enter.

If I were eligible to enter, I would have put in the following picture. It's the New Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO.
