I'm considering upgrading from a 350D to a 30D. I shoot a lot of flood lit games. I use 70-200 2.8L usually at 200mm 2.8 app iso800
What i'm after for is faster focusing and less noise at iso 800 and above.
Heres some examples of what I do.
Cheers

If it's allowed, you might consider getting a better beamer for your 580. Unless you're close enough, I think your shots could use some fill. With the BB, you should be able to get some. Too many shadows with those floods. The 20D would get you lower noise and faster drive. that's about it, as far as what you may or may not need. If you tend to throw your gear a beating, the 20D would help too. More tolerant of abuse.

Whats "better beamer"?
never heard that before.
Yep shadows are a huge problem. I do use a flash for the chearleader pics. and occasionally for action. But generally they are to far away.

A professional freelance photojournalist that I know uses a 20D as a second body along with his 1D MkII N. Although the 20D/30D isn't considered to be a "professional's" camera, you can still get good enough results.

Cheers Spearin.
Anymore pros viewing this forum have a view on this camera?

Yes...pros use 20D's/30D's. I use mine as part of a 3 body set-up for weddings.

This is simple. A 1D is a must for any aspiring professional sports shooter.

^That's a better beamer. It'll increase your flash output by up to 3 stops. That link says it's designed for use with a 300mm+ lens, but I imagine it'd work fine with the 70-200. Use some FEC, and you'll do fine. However, I should think the 580 would be able to reach half way across a football field. It's got some hellish power. I know I've popped the flash at my neighbor's house across the street, and the whole thing was lit up. That's power.

Looks like a great idea and cheap.
But it would certainly turn heads if I had that attached on the the flash. Especially from the players after seeing stars from the flash. ;)

I'm a pro. My sole means of income for the past 21 years has been my professional portrait studio on main street in my hometown. I own a 20D and a 30D, so I guess that makes both of them professional cameras!

i don't know really. 20d, 30d, 350d, 1d, in the end, it's all about whose hands they're in. A good photographer should be able to take awsome photos regardless of what body they're using. Sure, you'll have the setbacks on the FPS, the crop ratio, etc. but still, I've seen / known people who can take insane photos with a 10D, 300D, 350d. Lorek being a 10D user.
So in my opinion, get whichever one suits your needs more, and also suits your budget. THOUGH, in my opinion, i'd say keep the 350D, and if you are going to upgrade save up a bit more money and go straight to the 5D. The only reason i'd upgrade my 350D is to get the full frame sensor. in terms of quality, 350D MAY be slightly lower than others, but not enough to make me upgrade to another small sensor camera
Edit: for the record, your 350D photos are awsome, i really don't see a need for you to upgrade since you'll end up with photos of near same quality.. rather just up your lens instead if you really want to upgrade

high ISO performance, durability (magnesium alloy body vs. plastic), 2 more fps, quick control dial, better viewfinder, more ergonomic, etc. There's a ton of upgrades that make the 20D, let alone the 30D, worth it over the XT. And, at the price they're at now, there's almost no reason not to have a 20D. Come on...barely 800 now? that's a freakin' steal.

Yeah, it is a steal at the current price, but after looking at the photos byso takes, I'm not sure how any of those 'upgraded features' helps him in terms of photo quality. (maybe ISO performance...maybe)
20D users hate to admit it, but the XT is essentially equally capable except under a few odd circumstances. ;)
My opinion is that upping to a 20D isn't going to improve the quality of your shots very much if at all.
*Disclaimer - this opinion from someone who makes a living with an XT. :)

I've only ever used my 20D for paid events, but always get the job done. If you're a capable enough photographer, it shouldn't be a problem. My money has gone into good lens before a body. The 1 series body is next, sometime next year.

I was very happy with the 300D. I'm happier with the 20D. But I could go back if I had to.

I'm still plugging away with the 300D! (http://ksmith.smugmug.com/photos/46224866-M.jpg)
Although I am about to upgrade to the 30D. Going to loose a zero
