OK, I'm done editing... at least with the cars I really like. I still have the 911s to edit, but HERE is the whole gallery so far. (http://www.pbase.com/benjacobsen/alms_limerock_2006) These are all as they came out of the camera, NO CROPPING AT ALL! Everything was shot with my sigma 70~200mm f2.8 with a TC (I used both the 1.4 and 2.0 all day). Exifs are intact so have at it. 5~10 shots of each car in my gallery. I figure I've put enough in here to slow the loadtime up a bit...

My favorites of each car:

CC are needed and welcome as this is my first try at motorsports. I had a blast and will be going back, that's for sure. I also TIVOed it and have watched it 2 times so far, once live and once on my TIVO...

Great shot of the vette... really awesome motion! I wish the head-on shots had more motion, or a more interesting background, but they are still nice. Well done.

I'm no motorsport photographer but they look pretty darn impressive to me. If I got those on my first try I'd be over the moon. I like the first and last the best.
Superb shots!

Thanks, Yeah I'm pretty pleased, but after looking at my shots and lots of others I know a few things to work on for next time:

*use several locations (I was with a firend that wanted to shoot in that spot all day)
*slower shutter speeds for head ons so wheels have more blur ( iused 1/500th, should use 1/250~1/320
*1/90~1/125 for panning is the best, but I need practice to keep myself stable!
*location location location... I need to work on getting better backgrounds.
*earplugs!

All things considered I was very pleased with what I got for my first time. I learned a ton and had a blast. I look forward to my next chance so I can (hopefully) improve on the things I see wrong now.

very good for a first attempt

those points you have noted in the above post are correct. The main one is to use several locations nothing worse than having to edit a hundred odd photos that all look the same.

love the shot of the Aston

Yeah, try 1000 shots all in that same place. The corvette shot (which is arguably my favorite) was taken on the way "out the door"... At limerock you leave over a bridge going from the infield to the outfield. I shot the vette just before I went onto the bridge as it was going around "big bend" which is a very big high speed corner, perfect for panning. As I said I had met a friend there who knew more than I do about motorsports. He was after head on shots and had shot all the other angles before so he was concentrating on that one section. Being my first event I didn't want to go off on my own as he knows a lot about the ALMS series (I just like the cars, but have no clue on the points/drivers and details, although I learned a ton Saturday, and more on Sunday watching on TV). Next time I now know that I need to spend about 30 minutes in each spot and move on. I was also concerned about getting good images, so I figured if I shot in the same place for the whole race, as my technique improved I'd HAVE to get some keepers by the end of the day. That part was true, so I'm glad I did what I did, and now I know what to do next year...

I'm already looking at limerocks schedule to see when something else fun is comming so I can go practice again! I'm thinking this motorsports photography could become a very bad habbit!

not bad shots there, especially as a first attempt.
Audi and Aston are my faves.

Can I add to something to think about for the next shoot,

- Angle of the Sun, nearly all of your shots (posted here) have the shadow on your side, dulling the image. Whilst I am fully aware of the limitations of positioning, it's just something to think about, getting on the lighter side, but not directly!

Some really nice shots there pal. Love the 2nd and a fan of the Aston Martin. I managed to look round the car at Goodwood last year....hopefully it'll be there again this weekend.

Good point, We had access to shoot around most angles of the infield. I am looking for the sun at my back as the prefered angle? The corvette shot has the best lighting IMHO and the lighting is more at my back there than in the others (different spot).

Thanks for the input.
