View Full Version : The First Go Round...

Shot my first, and what will likely be my last, wedding yesterday.
The couple are frienda and co-workers, and they know I'm not a wedding photographer. But, had I not agreed to do it, everything they would have would've come from a point & shoot and, well, we just can't have that.
Here are three shots that I like. I know there are things wrong with them here and there but, overall, I'm satisfied with the job I did yesterday:

Despite the fact that I will probably never again shoot a wedding, I;d be interested in comments on these three shots..
Thankfully, the Bride's aunt used to be a wedding director, so she took care of posing everyone for pictures. I just shot when she said "Okay, Steve, there ya' go".
Like I said, I'm satisfied with the results and, given that I tend to be much more critical of my work than most, I'm sure the new Mr. & Mrs. will be satisfied, as well.
Be that as it may, though, I need to go find me a concert hall...

They look a little staged, but then they were staged, so that's expected! I think as a favour for coworkers you've done a respectable job. #1 i'd get closer, or crop it. The look a little flat, like flash has been used a bit strong, but that could just be the light there, and off-camera lighting isn't for wedding newbies - or even for experienced people during busy weddings. Good work :)

Steve, I think the B&G will be very happy. To go from no wedding photos to this is really great. I am sure you got lot of terrific shots.

I think your a lifesaver from their POV, and even though they do look very posed, its great to know that you were willing to help out with some better equipment and photography knowledge, rather than it all happen with a point and shoot from a guest at the wedding.
Add some contrast to these shots, and i think they will pop a bit more.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
I think I was probably more nervous than either the bride or the groom (although the bride's mother was a wreck, but that's her job!). But, not being a "wedding photographer", I think I handled the task pretty well.
I agree about the "posed" and "pop" comments. There were a lot of shots taken during the reception which were not posed but, of course, I guess there have to be some posed shots (bride & groom, wedding party, etc.). As for the "pop", I'm going to look at those a bit more before giving the happy couple the photos.
And that's another upside: I don't have to provide prints, or an album, or anything. All they wanted was the photos on a CD, so they could print them later. With respect to what they paid me, I'd say it was a good day's work. It was probably a paltry sum compared to what actual "wedding photographers" are paid, but it was a small fortune for someone who spends most of his time in the tight-wallet world of live-band photography.
Again, thanks for the comments; appreciate it!

Great job, well done they will love this (it's way better than what they would have gotten)

Umm... yeah. I mean, YEAH! Boy, I had to hit that mode switch until "ETTL" came up; what a chore! Honestly, I was flyin' by the seat of my pants on this one. I've never used anything other than the onboard flash on the 20D, so this was all new to me. The more "auto" I could get it, the better!
nice job.
Thank you!

There is nothing wrong with those pics, especially since you were virgin and all..

These are better than some Uncle Bob start up wedding photographer photos. ;) I am sure they liked them.

I dropped off a few prints and the CD yesterday. They loved them!
I figure it this way: I jumped into the wedding-photography fray, and did a respectable job. No need to try to screw up that record.
I'm out!
