Hi all,

I don't hvae my 350D with 18-55mm yet ... maybe in a few days ... I know I am going to love it after a short and steep learning curb

I ordered a 100 f2.8 USM (can someone tell me what EF & USM means?)

Apparently the 100 f2.8 USM is very versatile & good for portraits as well as macro. Whats it like for larger scale work?

If you view, please take the time to comment.

Comments/Critique?

Anyway, here is one of my latest Pano's I shot with my s5000 on a recent trip to the Karajini National Park in the Western Australian Pilbara.

This second one is from the Darling Range near Perth. I used to go camping here a lot.

Wow that's nice. Makes me miss Australia. I haven't been there since 1998.

Welcome to the forums, and a couple of richly coloured photos to start with too. I do find the first one perhaps a bit too saturated for my taste though.

EF stands for "extended focus", and USM (in lens terms) stands for ultrasonic motor (fast and quiet focus mechanism). In post-processing terms, USM stands for unsharp mask. :)

Wow, for someone who doesn't know what EF or USM means, you take some incredible pictures! ;) Very, very nice.

Ah, memories from an all too short holiday. Very nice.
Depending on the time of day, John, these may not be software saturated. Wayne_eddy, please enlighten us. (no pun intended)

Nice images and a nice landscape. The only thng I do not like is the change in color of the clouds in the first image. They are white on the left and changing to yelowisch in the center.

And I have to correct rudgej; EF does not stand for "Extended Focus", but stands for "Electro-Focus"

I am going to WA next year oct-nov traveling from Darwin to Perth (on push-bike) :D. I still have to find out how te carry my cam and lenses on the bike.

Wow, on pushbike? That's a bloody long ride. How long are you planning to get from A to B? You should see some brilliant sights along the way, though :D

Welcome to the forums. You have a pretty good eye for a picture, these are terrific. The exif on #1 says it was taken after 9:00 PM. Is that right? The colors are quite saturated on that one.

EF - electro focus, USM - ultrasonic motor (for a lens). Both are very good things for sure. Your kit lens on the 350XT will be an EF-S lens which I believe stands for electro focus short(?). At any rate that lens will only go on certain Canon DSLRs where as the EF lens will go on any Canon DSLR. USM is the better version of the Canon focus motors used in their lenses.

Jesus F. Christ!!

We had an American that tried that a few years ago called Robert Begurke. He got so confident he thought he would make a Sunday ride through the Great Sandy Desert.

Don't try that in this country.

I probably finished joining the 4-6 images together in PS by after 9pm.

These were taken using a CP filter, something I will give up on for larger Pano's as the shy is too inconsistant without a wide angle lens.

#1 These are pretty much the real colours once the bright sun is cut out using CP. I just checked it against the original, the original is an ev or 2 darker.

#2 required a bit of blending in the sky to match it up. This was taken with the sun directly in front of me as you can see by the shadows.

Composition, I've had plently of practice in the last 2 years. Shall post some more tonight if I cannot get to sleep - it's 3:00am here.

If you can imagine it, you can make it reality with Canon’s extensive range of EF (extended focus) lenses. Each one is designed to maximise the performance of our SLR cameras, enabling you to create outstanding results on film quickly, quietly and easily. :p

Very nice couple of images, they press all the right buttons.
Especially like the second one, and how you have used the stream to invite you into the image.

Don't worry, it's the second time I'm doing a trip like this in your country. I've done Darwin-Alice Springs-Uluru and Longreach-Brisbane in 2003. It all sounds worst than it is. Just 5 hours cycling a day for 6 weeks :D

Darwin to Perth on a push bike ? Insane! In 1993 I rode a push bike from Sydney to Cairns and I thought that was a bit of a go. But then again it wasn't a million degrees outside.:)
