These pictures were taken at a recent gig with new Indi band 'The View'. They have recently been signed to sony records and are set to hit the big time later this year. I shot them in a small 'poorly lit venue'. Most of the shots were taken on a Canon 50mm 1.4 at 1600 ISO. Here are a couple of my favs.

Did you underexpose, or did you use a lot of the blue channel in cnoverting to B/W? The first two images have a *lot* of noise for ISO 1600 on a 20D IMO .... They are also quite soft. (50mm wide open and motion blurr I'ld guess)
Third on is fine, and incidentally, also the best image I think. Nice background...

Lighting in the venue was two small spotlights, so the conditions were not ideal. On checking files first to were taken on 3200 ISO

Because the are really good!!!!
To be exact they are signed to 1965 records in London who are owned by SONY.
They are going to be massive in 6 months time

semantics here, but i always thought 'indie' meant that you were actually on an independent record label, and wasn't a particular sound per se. the british hype machine leaves me cold. the headcoats had it right (http://www.damagedgoods.co.uk/headcoats/index.html) ;)

Narlus, you are correct ... Indie means "independent" and Sony certainly is not! There occasionally is a misuse of this term by PR folks who somehow want to equate it to "hip" or "cool" or "in" because Indie bands usually have much better reputations than the owned bands. Indie bands often produce themselves and are not drawn by making great money but rather by making great sounds.

well there are plenty of terrible indie bands too; not having a big label pushing you around doesn't necessarily translate into artistic genius territory.
that said, most of the time i've had the most success w/ following the particular taste of a particular label's principle (ie, gerard cosloy @ homestead/matador, corey rusk @ touch and go, nick schulz @ majora, long gone john @ sympathy for the record industry, paul mcckessar/roger shepherd @ flying nun, dan koretzky/dan osborn @ drag city, etc). lots of good people out there getting good stuff out the door.

Possibly the difference between Uk and USA. I guess Indie in the UK is more of a brand of music than Independant Record Labels. Some of the hottest bands around in the UK at the moment and in the last two decades would come under the banner of 'Indie' music as a genre but none of them are signed to small labels.
Leaving that aside the band the view are 18 years old, from working class backgrounds and have done very well for themselfs in a short space of time.
As I said earlier they are signed to a small lable that is owned by a big one.

By this point the crowd were so wild I had to retreat to behind the stage to save my camera from being knocked out my hands

yeah, that must be it. as far as i can tell, in the UK, 'indie' = sad attempts at hype inducement. sorta like NME voting arctic monkeys' debut the 6th best british record of all time. i can only hope that 'indie' is at least a step up in quality from other brit-made pigeonholes, like 'baggy', 'batcave' and 'grebo'.
no question that the US mainstream scene is total crap, but the british one ain't that far ahead, and that includes 'indie' bands on labels like Sony.
