Hey everyone.. Just registered.
About a year ago I decided to start taking a interest in photography.. I was never much for canon products at the time (but now realize I think I was fouly mistaken by hearsay of others!) anyway.. I purchased a nikon coolpix 4500, and its been a great camera, except I see even the much older canon digitals capture colors spectacularly compared to my nikon (yellow and red particularly).

I have tried testing with settings again and again.. but nothing helps.. As I compare I notice people taking pictures with canon's "out of the box settings" are capturing spectacular pictures with ease!

in short, Ive made a decision to start looking for a new camera, possibly a g3. If money allows, a g5.

Im curious how everyone feels about the g3 compared to the nikon, I realize that most of you users will be biased considering this IS a canon forum but thats ok.. im near sold on the g3 anyway. :p

thats all..

Thanks,
Drew

Oh and I have some other questions..
If theres one thing i seriously love about my nikon is the rechargable battery, I cant seem to find if the powershots a rechargable battery or not?

Ummm, I don't think you can buy a decent digital camera with single use batteries :)

I don't think you should bother with a G3 IFF (if and only if) you already have a 4500 as they are very similar cameras. Funny colours can easily be the result of something not being right with your computer.

I think G3/G5 is better than coolpix 4500 also regarding internl flash. The G3 one is stronger and E-TTL while the 4500 one is controlled by external photocell (absoluty unreliable for macro shots).
G3/G5 also have a bigger LCD, a faster lens (F2), focus bracketing, manual focus 2X magnification, standard flash hotshoe and so on...
Regarding batteries, should be noticed that battery autonomy of G3 is about twice than Nikon 4500.
The only thing I found better on 4500 is minimal focus distance (2 cm) that is great for macro but this limitation on G3 can be overriden using closeup or reversed lens.

I think there is a decent camera with standard batteries: Olympus C5050.

You still use rechargeable batteries though, unless you enjoy buying lots of batteries.

The G3 is better (that's why I got one), but I still don't think it's worth going from a Nikon 4500 to a G3.
