Wondering what the best method is for monochrome. Do I set my 350d to B&W or shoot in RAW and convert to B&W.

B/W in post processing...always.

Always best to do it post processing. For one, you get the best of both worlds; you get to keep a color image and B&W. There are many tutorials and other useful sites regarding conversion to B&W (do a google search on "Converting color photos to Black & White"). Most involve the use of layers and a channel mixer. By selectively controlling the R-G-B channels, you get a more dynamic B&W picture, with better contrast. Simply desaturating a picture, which is basically what the camera does, leaves a bland B&W shot.

If you set your camera to RAW + JPG and shoot in the B&W mode in camera you get the best of all worlds. A colour RAW image to convert if you wish or a B&W JPG file to use if you like the B&W image straight from the camera.

Thanks for the comments, will take onboard suggestions. Going to try JD RAW and Jpeg next time out.

I agree with GovtLawyer. The contrast and tones are superior when converted with Channels, You will have much greater control over the final look of the image.
