Can everyone help out a newbie here and tell me what you all think of these couple pics of my son thanks....

Portraits often generate some debate on this forum, possibly because there is a wide range of tastes.

I reckon your 3 shots are technically pretty good, the exposure seems OK and the focus and sharpness are not bad. It is 'usual' to focus on the subjects eyes and you are a little out on one of them but not much.

The tight crops with parts of the hair cut off are not to my taste, but that is subjective others may really like it.

The other obvious point is the narrow range of tones involved, mostly skin tones, blonde hair and sand coloured fabric. This gives a cold and slightly flat feel to the images, which I feel is a little at odds with the warm expressions on your son's face. However this is also a matter of taste and some people may like the subtlety.

Of the 3 I like the 3rd one best because the expression is the most engaging.

Of course, you know the boy well and we do not, so you will be able to tell which best captures his personality and expresses something about him.

In the end you are trying to make an image that tells everyone something about what your son is like. If you try to bear this in mind while composing the shots then you seem to have plenty of technical ability to make it work.
