View Full Version : Fisheye?

I'm longing for a fisheye lens these days. Anyone have one that they could post some wedding pics that they've taken with it? Thinking it'd be really fun for the ceremony and reception. And if anyone has any advice on what to look for when buying one - that'd be great! I'm renting one for an upcoming wedding to see how much I like it.

Great shots!! The second one is exactly what I'm thinking of for weddings - not distorting the people but still being able to see the whole scene. Nice.
I'm not familiar with the Peleng - just googled it... is it only manual focus? I suck at manual focus so that makes me hesitant - but the price of the lens is so reasonable that I'm tempted.... Hmmm....

Interesting gimmick, not for me.

I can't see any real value to my clients through a fisheye, to be honest.

I've considered it, but I have more important expenses before a fisheye. The only one I would buy is the canon 15mm f/2.8 fisheye.

Yes, the Peleng is only manual focus, but that's not an issue. With such a small focal lenght, the iperfocal distance is very small, therefore, you focus on infinity, and everything more than a few meters away is going to be in focus.
Thanks to All for your comments!

I use a Peleng 8mm FE too (though it hasn't seen much use since I bought the 10-20). Fun little lens for not much cash.

I agree with Tim, I don't think it is going to apeal to enough clients to spend the money on it. Unless you are going to shoot enough other stuff to justify the cost of the lens I wouldn't buy it. I personally don't see the point of the distortion that a fish eye creates, but if you are into that then it is all good. I have 10-22 that I thought I would use a lot more for weddings, but have only used it very sparingly (it is great for large groups).

I'm not a wedding photog, but I'd agree with the others here. I've a fisheye and wouldn't use it for portriats. An ultrawide maybe a better option than a fish. The price is about the same as well (the Peleng and Zenitar would be the exceptions though).

I can see maybe one pic per wedding just to give the client something different...i like it but you wouldn't get much versitility. Just my opinion

I had someone use the fish eye lens at an event the other week. The photos we got were un usable and horrible :(
I HATE the fish eye lens.

I can easily understand your point, if this guy used only the fisheye for the entire event. My opinion is that sometimes, a wierd perspective can be interesting. but, for what happened to you, I think you should blame the photographer, not the lens!

I bought the tokina 12-24 this week.
I have it on my mail this week...
I think, during a wedding, some picture can be take with this kind of lens...
Some funny picture and pose ;)

I agree with you. A few shots can be funny.... And, the friends of mine who were getting married (I have been only shooting wedding of friends so far) liked the shots.

Tiziano, you are so lucky to have all that incredible architecture to shoot. The photos, and your daughter, are all beautiful. I am not a huge fan of the fisheye, but I would love to see the same shots with a wide angle lens.

Thanks Daclozer! :D
Here below are similar shots, taken with the 16-35 @16. You will notice that, given the fact that I'm using a 20D, 16 is not that wide.

Oner more thing: you can fix the fisheye distortion. This way maybe you can recover some of your shots.
Here below is an example: first shot is the original, with the peleng 8mm, and the two below are two different steps of the fixing process. I used the Iris software.

This could have helped in your nightmare too, Jamiewexler! ;)
