I noticed the other day that I have a speck of dust on the sensor. I found that it only shows up when that area of the photo is light and evenly colored. None the less, it driving me crazy now that I have noticed it.
I was going to put the vacuum cleaner near the opening and try to blow on the sensor with bulb blower at the same time. Theory being that if I knock the dust free the vacuum will suck it away.
What is the lastest and greatest way of cleaning the CMOS sensor? Any tips are invited.

Read page 117 of your D30 manual. If that procedure doesn't correct the problem have it cleaned by an authorized repair station.

The very first day I got my D30, I had faced this problem. All of a sudden, a picture shows a big speck of dark area ( looked like shadow) on a lighter area. I immediately knew what it was. Keeping my cool, I removed the lens and opened the shutter at B setting ( no time for fancy Sensor cleaning mode) and saw a big black stuff was clinging on the sensor. A puff of air luckily blew it out and it looked like a peeled off thin film of paint. No idea how it got there.

I have read that D30 Cmos sensor and low pass filter is protected by an additional clear protection glass. So do not panic, try with a blower brush or better still a hurricen blower brush. No compressed air please, cause the exit velocity of air is too high to be safe. Moreover never ever put the blower brush nozzel inside the lens mount. Bringing vaccum cleaner nozzel to the Camera while you are blowing air into it sound too unsafe. Not being paranoid is the key :D

It is not that fragile as it may appear due to the protection glass. So in very bad contamination, you may safely able to clean the sensor with some of the reputed wet sensor wipes. Never ever apply anything dry.
